We are very proud to announce that we will be hosting the Canadian National Junior Championships. From April 28 th through to May 1 st the very best juniors from around the country will be at our Club fighting out for top honors. This is a great opportunity for our own top juniors to test themselves at the highest level and for the next generation to witness at close hand how dynamic this sport can be. end of season wind-up May 14 th | 7:00 pm Our end of season wind-up will again be held at Squash Chair, Lesley Hayes’s, home. This is our chance to celebrate another great squash season, all players young and old and their families are invited. Please keep and eye on notice boards and your e-mails for further details on this event. Junior Club Championships We will be running our Junior Club Championships this season on Friday, April 15 th and Saturday, April 16 th . There will be categories for boys and girls U19,17,15,13 and U11. Please register through Game Time. Family Fun Doubles This year we will be running our family doubles event again on May 14 th from 1:00 to 3:30 pm. All parents that have children who play are invited to join this fun afternoon of squash. We will have categories for all abilities. M a y 2 0 1 1 Summer SquaSH anD aCtion CamPS The Squash and Action summer camps that we will be running during July and August are ideal for any junior keen to play squash, learn the basics of the sport or to play with their friends. Everyone will learn technique, rules and match play in a fun rewarding environment. These skills will be progressed throughout the week and on the final day there will be a mini tournament to test their new skills. This camp will be full of action. Some of these camps may be joined with another sport at the club, for further information please consult the summer camp guide. We feel that we have a truly world class facility and coaching team. In addition, we are thrilled to announce that we have been successful in securing one the most sought after coaches in the world to be our lead coach. Martin Heath, originally from Scotland, spent 6 consecutive years ranked inside the world’s top 10 reaching his highest ranking of world number 4 in 1999. Following his very successful playing career Martin relocated to the US to pursue a coaching career, a career that has seen highlights such as him becoming the US Teams National Junior Men’s coach and head US Team coach at the World University Championships. Martin’s day to day job is as head squash coach at The University of Rochester. Under Martin’s leadership in five short years the university team rose from a ranking of No. 28 to No. 4, the quickest rise of any team in the 90 year history of the US College Squash Association. This is an ideal opportunity for our top junior players to learn from a coach who has had both a spectacular playing career and now is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading coaches. tournament reSultS Canada winter Games The Canada Winter Games are held every four years. This year’s event was held in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Around 20 different sports are present with squash being one of them. Each province fields a team of the top 2 ranked players in their U17 and U19 categories. This year, we were proud that two of our members represented Alberta: Jason Field for the boys team and Evelyn Moorhouse for the girls. Both had a great time and helped their teams to very respectable finishes. The boys finishing fourth overall and the girl’s going one better and taking home the bronze medal, finishing third in their event. Congratulations to both! Alberta closed results The Glencoe Club hosted this year’s Alberta Closed event, attracting a strong field from far and wide. Competition was always going to be tough. Standout performances for the week were from: Dustin Paisley who continued his recent vein of good form, reaching the final of the level 2 event, eventually losing a very tight match to Tyler Lee from Edmonton; from Neil Pohlman who cruised through to the final of the men’s level three before narrowly losing to Alex Scherer; and from Brent Brooker who comfortably reached the final of the men’s level 4 before losing to the Glencoe’s Nathan Lao. Congratulations to all three. Glencoe Junior Open With a great squad of 33 juniors from our program descending on the Glencoe for their annual junior open event expectations were always going to be high. Our juniors did not disappoint. Victorious in their categories were: Brett Schille, Bobby Cragg and Kate Dumaine. Runners-up were: Noel Heaton, Aaron Kunik, Hannah Treleaven, Tyson Schille and Brooklyn McCasey. Congratulations to all winners and runners-up and all others who took part. BC jesters Assistant pro, Susie King, travelled with ten of our juniors to Victoria, BC to compete in the prestigious BC Jesters, held at the Cedar Hill Club in February. Again valuable experience was gained by all players, in particular Tyson Schille who won his event as well as Brett Schille, and Samantha Roberts who placed second in her event. Summer camPS and PrOgramS regiStratiOn On-line registration for summer camps and programs opens at 6:00 am on tuesday, april 12 th for all Active members and April 19 th for Select Wait List members. Register in person at the Sports Office or on-line at gametime.calgarywinterclub.com Alberta Junior Championships This year, the Glenora Club, Edmonton, hosted the Alberta Junior Championships. Once again, our junior section was out in force with 28 juniors travelling north. The event always has the added significance as it is the final event for juniors to try to secure a place on team Alberta. After a couple of days of fierce competition, we came away with three titles and five second place finishes. Our girls played very well. In the U11 category we saw a dominating display from our members. We took places 1, 2 and 3. Lara Kunik won defeating all opponents without dropping a game. Kate Dumaine played very well to earn a well deserved second place and Brooklyn McCasey came in third. Gillian Chick had a great match in the final of the U13 category, losing by the narrowest margin a nail biting 5 set match. In the U15 event, our players secured spots 2, 3 and 4 spots with Hannah Treleaven placing second after a tough 4 game match in the final. Evelyn Moorhouse placed second in the U17 event losing to experienced campaigner Heather Yong in the final. The boys continued bringing home results. Alex Collins playing only his second event beat Tyson Schille, also a Winter Club member in an enthralling final that went the full five games. Graham Kerford, coming back from an injury, played controlled squash to reach the final, losing out eventually to number 1 seed Adrian DeVries in an entertaining 4 game final. The hottest category by far was the boys U13. With 4 of the field all ranked within the top 10 nationally, competition was sure to be brutal. Once the dust had settled, Brett Schille found himself facing Canada’s number 1 in the final match. After an hour of top squash and five physically demanding games, Brett managed to secure the title to the delight of the CWC supporters. Noel Heaton placed third while Aaron Kunik and Aidan Temple placed fourth and fifth respectively. Special mention must go to both Aaron and Aidan who showed that their hard work this season is paying off as both beat top 10 ranked player Nathan Tovell of the Glencoe Club.
