5 kilos, of lead, and finally, after strong heating, 2 kilos, of <strong>antimony</strong>.<br />

Add to this mixture 1 kilo, of common type-metal (made from 25<br />

kilos, of lead and 5 kilos, of <strong>antimony</strong>).<br />

(d) Hard Lead.—It is a particularly useful alloy, suitable for many<br />

technical purposes in which the lead, when used alone, possesses too<br />

low a melting-point; and further, it is used to make cocks and valves<br />

that come into contact with acids in chemical works. It is obtained<br />

from <strong>antimony</strong> ore containing much lead, and also as a by-product<br />

from smelting works. Its usual composition is 22 per cent. Sb and<br />

78 per cent. Pb.<br />
