Effects of Combined Exercise Training on Strength, Balance and Quality Of Life in Patients with<br />

Multiple Sclerosis<br />

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exercise training on strength,<br />

balance and quality of life in patients with multiple sclerosis. Methods: 38 volunteers participated in<br />

this study and randomly divided to exercise(mean± SD: age =001/6 ±631/31 yrs, weight = 194/12<br />

±684/62 kg, height = 587/7 ±115/165 cm) (n =19) and control group(mean± SD: age =031/6±500/32<br />

yrs, weight = 915/9 ±527/64 kg, height = 557/8 ±055/165 cm)(n = 19). Exercise group performed a<br />

progressive combined exercises,including stretch training. aerobic exercises, resistance training and<br />

balance training, for 24 sessions during 8 weeks. Strength, balance and quality of life were Measured<br />

by One Repetition Maximum, Berg Balance scores and Multiple Sclerosis Quality of Life-54<br />

questionnaire (MSQOL-54), respectively. Tests were obtained at baseline and post-treatment followup.<br />

Results: Muscle strength and balance were increased significantly after the training program in<br />

exercise group(p0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that combined training can be beneficial and<br />

well tolerated for patients with MS. Keywords: multiple sclerosis, combined exercise training,<br />
