Do you know now why children threw stones at you?
Tim: We talked about it in a restaurant in the area. They just asked
why we didn’t throw stones back at them! I guess that’s life. The
shop owners throw stones at the youths to scare them away from
their shop entrances, the youths throw stones at their younger siblings,
and they in turn throw stones at cows and white cyclists. We
haven’t found an answer yet. Some things probably have to stay a
secret when you’re travelling through a foreign country.
Why did you decided to collect donations for Doctors Without
Borders?
Fabian: It was our plan from the very beginning to make our trip
public through different types of media, like on our blog or in a
film. We wanted to show a different picture of Africa to the people
who followed our journey from home – and in turn, we wanted to
redirect the attention we got. We wanted Africa to profit from it.
One euro per kilometre is the goal.
Tim: On the road we simply couldn’t help everybody, so we chose
Doctors Without Borders. They know where aid is most needed.
We have already got 9,000 euros, and will continue until we reach
the 12,000 kilometres in euros.
Earlier you said that you held onto a truck while going uphill. Isn’t
that cheating?
Fabian: We didn’t do everything by the rulebook. We took the ferry
once, too. We did have ambitions though: for example Tim wanted
to cycle up the Blue Nile Gorge. I happened to catch the back of a
truck and was on top two hours earlier to play table football with
the kids. We gambled with two cokes – they won.
You’re always talking about coke. Was it your very own currency?
Fabian: Exactly. When we arrived in a new state we always bought
a coke first which is actually cheaper than water. You get an idea
about how much things like bananas or a night in a guesthouse >
