Dominican Republic • Education • Human Rights for Deaf People • Promotion and Defence of Sign Language • Recognition of Costa Rican Sign Language (LESCO) • Sports and Social Arenas With the goal of improving the well-being and integration of people with disabilities, a plan has been set in action in the areas of education, culture, recreation, health and employment. This plan of action outlines the tasks that ministries and institutions in Cuba must do to work with people with disabilities. • To encourage the Deaf community in social and cultural development • To motivate Deaf people in educational development, life styles and sport • To teach Deaf people about responsibilities and rights of members of society El Salvador • Area of interpretation Guyana Haiti Honduras Mexico Nicaragua • Awareness • Advocacy • Education • To liaise regularly with parents and families of people who have hearing problems • To promote continuing education about sign language and prevention of Deafness • To ensure access to the outside world by promoting awareness • To promote research of sign language in Haiti • To gather together necessary equipment and facility requirements • To support the socio-psycho-cultural development of children, youth and adults who have a hearing problem • To assume responsibility, where necessary, to support children, youth and adults with hearing problems in successful living • To inform Deaf people, via a daily newspaper, of their rights and the organisations and services available to help them cope with their handicap • To defend the psychosocial and medical rights of Deaf people because, no matter the sophistication of assistive equipment, they will always be handicapped • To support psychosocial integration and inclusion of Deaf people in the workforce, in particular in professional and academic environments • To represent Deaf people, both users of sign language and oral Deaf, to public authorities • To promote the recognition of sign language in the Haitian Constitution; and to continue to promote sign language even after its recognition • To lobby for 100% access to televised programmes via sign language and subtitling • To encourage the elimination of illiteracy through the use of new communication technologies for Deaf people, providing access through sign language, in order to improve their living conditions • Human Rights • Rights of Deaf People • Rights to Education, Employment and Vocational Training • Inclusive Education, Interpreting Service, Equal Opportunity Congress, including the president, co-operate with the National Council for People with Disabilities and also with the National Council for the Prevention of Discrimination. Many government institutions know of FEMESOR. The State System for the Full Development of the Family (DIF) also works with us. Political involvement in Parliament, and national and local government (Congress, Senate) as well as Non-Governmental Organisations for information and awareness of the human rights of Deaf people in communication access and interpreting services. Please note: Subsequently it was discovered that the word ‘policy’ was translated into Spanish incorrectly; this may have confused some respondents.
