The review has been conducted follow<strong>in</strong>g the guidel<strong>in</strong>es of the Cochrane<br />

Collaboration. This entails that (1) most steps <strong>in</strong> the review are performed by two<br />

researchers <strong>in</strong>dependently, (2) the researchers work <strong>in</strong> accordance with a predef<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

protocol and (3) the methodological quality of the studies is taken <strong>in</strong>to account<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the data synthesis. The method is described <strong>in</strong> detail <strong>in</strong> the Cochrane<br />

Reviewers’ Handbook (Clarke et al., 2002).<br />

Inclusion criteria<br />

Types of studies. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled cl<strong>in</strong>ical trials<br />

(CCTs), also <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g cross-over trials with a sufficient wash-out period (depend<strong>in</strong>g<br />

on the specific psychosocial method), were <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> the review when there was a<br />

full article or description of the study obta<strong>in</strong>able.<br />

Types of participants. People were <strong>in</strong>cluded who have been diagnosed as hav<strong>in</strong>g a type<br />

of dementia accord<strong>in</strong>g to DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, ICD-10 or other comparable<br />

<strong>in</strong>struments. Both <strong>in</strong>patients and outpatients and all severities of dementia were<br />

<strong>in</strong>cluded.<br />

Types of psychosocial methods. The 10 psychosocial methods dist<strong>in</strong>guished by the<br />

American Psychiatric Association were <strong>in</strong>cluded, their names sometimes adjusted to<br />

current practice (APA, 1997), supplemented with three methods (<strong>in</strong> table 2.1 with<br />

an asterisk) that are well known to be used <strong>in</strong> the Netherlands.<br />
