Wash Fast Acid Dyes
Achieve striking, professional colors on your protein fiber with Wash Fast Acid Dyes. Create a
whole rainbow by starting with just three primary colors (we suggest 119, 338, and 440). These
require a little more preparation and a few auxiliary chemicals including salt (for level dyeing),
an acid such as ammonium sulfate, citric acid crystals or vinegar (to lower the pH of the dye bath
so the reaction will occur) and synthrapol (for better wetting). Add the dye powder directly to
the dye bath, as you do with Country Classic Dyes, or mix stock solutions for more accurate
measuring and reproducible colors. Available in 28 colors in 1 oz. recloseable plastic jars.
WHICH DYE FOR WHAT FIBER?
If you want to dye wool, mohair, angora, silk, soy or any other protein fiber you need to
use an acid dye. Acid dyes themselves are not acidic. They are called acid dyes because they
require an acid dye bath for the reaction to take place. Acid dyes also require heat so the
dye bath must be simmered. Halcyon Yarn offers two acid dyes for protein fibers Country
Classic Dyes and Wash Fast Acid Dyes. These dyes can also be used on nylon. We use the
sheep symbol to represent protein fiber dyes.
To dye cotton, linen, rayon, tencel, bamboo or other cellulose fibers choose the Procion
Fiber Reactive Dyes. Fiber reactive dyes react with cellulose fibers in an alkaline dye bath.
They are considered “cold” water dyes because they do not need to be simmered; they
work best at about 90ºF. Although fiber reactives will work on silk, for best results, we
recommend acid dyes for silk. We use the leaf symbol to represent cellulose fiber dyes.
