Wool Combs, Elegance & Function
Indigo Hound Fivepitch
English Combs
If you want to produce a cleaner
more uniform top, you will want
to consider English combs. When
using English combs, one comb is
held stationary in a base which is
clamped to your table or work space
while the other is gently swung.
Indigo Hound 5-pitch English
combs have five rows of tines and
come complete with wooden combs
covers, base pad, clamp, diz, doffer
and straightening tools.
Louët Mini Combs
(shown below single row)
These “cute” little combs are just what you need if angora, cashgora
and lambs wool are the fibers you like to spin! They are lightweight,
easy to handle combs with closely spaced, thin tines that securely
hold short and fine fibers during combing. A pair weighs only a third
of a pound! Shown here in single-row, the double-row are identical
except there are two rows of tines offset for the finest fibers.
wool combs
Several years ago, wool combing regained its rightful position
among hand techniques for fiber preparation. Articles in Spin-Off
magazine and demonstrations at guilds and fairs fueled the fire.
Wool combs took their place on the shelf next to the wide array of
hand cards and flickers. Wool combs offer yet another option for
fiber preparation. These tools are used to comb fiber into top for
worsted spinning. Wool combs not only open locks, remove chaff
and organize the fibers into parallel alignment but also separate the
long fibers from the short ones and the coarse fibers from the fine
ones. Combed top is very uniform and spinning it is a breeze.
Despite their name, wool combs can be used on a large variety
of fibers - everything from angora to mohair to wool. There are
different shapes and sizes of
combs for different fibers and
applications. In general, the
more rows of tines, the better
the combing job - the more short
fibers are held back, and the more
uniform the top.
The Ashford Book of Carding ... Jo Reeve
Indigo Hound Viking Combs
Designed after an ancient European set of comb fragments,
Indigo Hound Viking combs fit the needs of today’s spinners.
Their long, single row teeth are suitable for most fleeces,
especially those with relatively long, coarse staples like
Romneys. The double row viking combs have two rows of
offset tines. This arrangement of tines holds back more of the
shorter fibers and loosens more chaff so that the resulting top
is cleaner and more uniform. The wood is maple, the tines are
stainless steel. Both come in pairs, and with an instruction
booklet.
Indigo Hound Viking Comb Pad
The Indigo Hound Viking Pad is a convenient way to secure a comb to your work
surface when lashing on and removing top. Or leave the comb in the pad and use
your Viking combs like English combs. # 68900040 • $20
Majacraft Combs (right)
