Advanced Higher London Trip<br />

‘The Merchant of Venice’. The<br />

prospect of practically the whole day<br />

spent at the theatre did not seem<br />

particularly enticing, even if it was an<br />

English trip, but on the arrival at the<br />

Globe we decided that we had never<br />

seen such a magnificent theatre and<br />

our tour turned out to be surprisingly<br />

interesting. No, seriously. Afterwards<br />

we discovered a nearby market<br />

where we had a deliciously fatty<br />

lunch of extremely chocolaty<br />

brownies and German bratwursts.<br />

Helen managed to get herself into a<br />

terrible mess and en route back to<br />

The Globe we were rather sidetracked<br />

by a rather serious ketchuprelated<br />

emergency. Fortunately we<br />

managed to get Helen cleaned-up<br />

and arrived at the theatre in time to<br />

see ‘The Merchant of Venice’- a threehour<br />

long yet highly entertaining<br />

Shakespearean classic. After the play<br />

we had been promised a stop at the<br />

shops so marched with impressive<br />

speed through London so as to cram<br />

in as much shopping time as possible.<br />

En route we stopped at a few places,<br />

mostly to play at filling in the street<br />

names ourselves on Mr O’Kane’s<br />

‘highly reliable’ street map and also<br />

at St. Paul’s cathedral to ‘take in some<br />

culture’. We then insisted that we had<br />

experienced quite enough culture for<br />

the day, thank you very much, and<br />

hurried off to the shops on the arrival<br />

at Covent Garden. An hour later, we<br />

had arranged to rendezvous with the<br />

teachers. The meal was thoroughly<br />

enjoyable and the conversation was…<br />

riveting. After a five-hour in-depthdiscussion<br />

involving input from Mr<br />

O’Kane, Mr O’Kane and Mr O’Kane,<br />

our group leader decided he had not<br />

blessed us with his conversation<br />

enough for one night and continued<br />

to share with us his ‘pearls of wisdom’<br />

at the hotel before he bid us<br />

goodnight and, verging on<br />

emotionally drained, we headed up<br />

We woke up on Sunday morning with<br />

an important mission: shopping. With<br />

single determination we took the<br />

journey through the underground to<br />

Oxford Street Station and headed out<br />

into shopping heaven. For a few<br />

moments we simply basked in the<br />

sight of all the different shops:<br />

Topshop… Selfridges… Primark!!! Not to<br />

mention many, many more. Our early<br />

morning start turned out fine. We had<br />

a lazy breakfast, and dawdled down<br />

the endless road to Primark for just<br />

after its opening at 11:30. I will only<br />

say that it was immense and full of<br />

clothes. If that doesn’t tell you we<br />

managed to spend all our shopping<br />

time there, nothing will. At this point<br />

we had a hasty lunch before running<br />

off to the Tate Gallery. We ran down<br />

Oxford Street, jumped aboard a train<br />

straight to St Paul’s and then quite<br />

literally raced all the way to the Tate<br />
