Tuscany has enjoyed several great
vintages lately – and by extension,
so have we wine lovers! In fact, 2004
kicked off a string of successes that’s still
going strong. With the 2007s now arriving
in a big way, it’s clear the hot streak
remains very much alive: Tuscany’s 2007
vintage for red wines is shaping up to be a
classic. While the Brunellos still slumber
in Tuscan cellars to fulfill ageing requirements,
we’ve assembled an early look at
the best of ’07, Tuscany’s latest triumph.

CHIANTI CLASSICO
The heart of the Chianti
region, where the style was
born. Here elegant Chianti
Classico DOCG wines are
crafted using at least 80%
Sangiovese. Sub-zones like
Chianti Rufina and Colli
Fiorentini sprung up around
this original nucleus.
Region surrounding the town
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
DOCG is made from at least
70% Sangiovese (here called
Prugnolo Gentile).
MONTALCINO/SANT’ANTIMO
This is a single region, classified into
two appellations. Montalcino includes
Brunello di Montalcino DOCG (aged
4+ years before release) and Rosso di
Montalcino DOC (aged 1+ years),
both made exclusively from the
Sangiovese Grosso (aka Brunello)
can be made fully or in part from
international varieties.
BOLGHERI
Home to some of the original
Super Tuscans – wines that
famously eschewed DOC/DOCG
own DOCs, though many great
wines still proudly wear their
IGT status.
RAVAZZI CHIANTI RISERVA 2007
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Ravazzi’s new wine cellar,
built in 2005, is decidedly modern, yet
home to classically fashioned wines such
as this pretty Chianti Riserva. Foodfriendly
and superbly structured, this dry,
medium-bodied delight is laden with
notes of chocolate, red fruit and spice.
A super-value wine that will earn rave
reviews when served with a cheese
TASTING NOTE: Three generations of the
(farm), built around an old church dating
back to the 9th century. This Chianti
exhibits a pretty anise nose, and delivers
tempting flavours of cassis, chestnut,
apple, and bell pepper. A crisp, mediumbodied
red that’s waiting to be enjoyed
tonight alongside some chicken tetrazzini
or a vegetable lasagna. (VINTAGES panel,
LA MADONNINA CHIANTI CLASSICO
RISERVA 2007
DOCG
(Fratelli Triacca)
TASTING NOTE: … The bouquet is rich,
with red berry fruit supported by dusky
greenish accents and some hints of yellow
peach, and also pleasing mentholated
accents. Nice balance and quite a bit to
say. On the palate it’s fresh, with rich
cherry plum fruit supported more by iodine
bitterness than acidity, and by smooth
sweet tannins that flow into a decidedly
bitter finish … will drink nicely with
grilled meats and roasts, especially leaner
meats such as roast beef, cooked rare
and sliced fairly thickly. It grew upon me.
ISOLE E OLENA CHIANTI CLASSICO
2007
DOCG
Bringing in the harvest in a
sun-drenched Chianti vineyard.
TASTING NOTE: The 2007 Chianti Classico
is simply marvelous. A touch rounder and
more generous than is typically the case,
the Chianti Classico reveals intense
aromatics that meld into a core of rich,
expansive red fruit. The open-knit,
giving quality of 2007 is on full display,
while clean, mineral notes on the finish
add a measure of clarity and balance.
Despite the wine’s ripeness, this remains
one of the more understated, hushed
Chiantis of the vintage. Readers who
enjoy the Burgundian side of Sangiovese
will flip out over this wine. Anticipated
maturity: 2010-2020. Score: 90 (Antonio
WHAT
MAKES A
GREAT
VINTAGE?
A good start, for starters. More specifically an early start: mild 2007
spring temperatures in Tuscany kept frost at bay and led to early budding,
which meant extra ripening time. Sunshine was plentiful throughout the
long growing season, with picture-perfect autumn weather giving growers
the freedom to choose exactly the right moment to bring in the harvest.
These serendipitous conditions led to finely balanced wines with deeply
complex aromatics, ripe tannins, and velvety textures.
VINTAGES 7
TO CELLAR
OR NOT
TO CELLAR?
One of the benefits of a nice
long growing season is that a
grape’s complexity is given
time to develop on the vine, long
before the wine is even bottled.
For this reason, wines such as
these ’07s quite often show
beautifully with a minimum of
bottle time. On the other hand,
exquisitely balanced wines are
best equipped to remain so as
they mature, making cellaring an
attractive proposition. Many of
these Tuscan ’07s could easily
age several years. Ultimately,
it’s a matter of preference – a
choice of two joys.
CECCHI VINO NOBILE DI
MONTEPULCIANO 2007
DOCG
TASTING NOTE: Ruby red in the glass.
Notes of plum, red fruit and violets. Dry
and well-structured, this wine demonstrates
great balance between the fruit and
tannin. A nice spicy quality mid-palate
adds to the complexity and leads to a
deliciously long finish. The perfect
match for a hearty winter stew. (VINTAGES
Fermented gently in the style of
the region, this Sangiovese blend brims
with elegant berry, vanilla, chestnut
and licorice. A medium-full-bodied red
TASTING NOTE: Rosso di
Montalcinos are designed to
of blackberry, cherry and a
hint of smoke, this wine is
TASTING NOTE: The estate’s
Sauvignon and Merlot now
that the Sangiovese has been
eliminated from the blend.
Although the wine is made
here those grapes speak with
a distinctly Tuscan accent.
Plummy dark fruit leads to
sweet herbs, spices, earthiness
and minerals as this
rich, deep wine opens up in
FOR
THOUGHT
Considering the sumptuousness of the sights and sounds of such places as
Florence, you might think Tuscan cuisine would be equally elaborate. Sumptuous
it often is, but a Tuscan meal is rarely complicated – elegant simplicity is prized.
Fresh, flavourful ingredients, simply prepared, are the hallmarks of Tuscan food.
Olives and olive oil, plus vegetables such as tomatoes, artichokes, peppers,
and beans are prime ingredients. Beef is also prominent, especially in the form
of a Sangiovese-matching wonder, bistecca alla fiorentina.

TATE
SECRETS
Once in the
shadow of other North
American regions,
Washington State is
revealing itself as
a wine power to be
reckoned with.
24 VINTAGES
There’s a well-kept wine secret on the US West Coast:
Washington State. Second only to California for quantity of
vinifera wine production in the US, it continues to win
critical favour. In fact, Wine Spectator’s 2009 Top 100 list
contained nine Washington State wines, and their justpublished
2010 list has five – including, at #43, this release’s
Columbia Crest H3 Merlot 2007.
Contrary to the images of coastal fog and rain conjured at mere
mention of Washington, the epicentre of the state’s wine country
is actually in the east and is a semi-desert. Many critics consider
it to be the best spot in the US for Cabernet Sauvignon, and also exceptional for Merlot.
Vines on original rootstock (phylloxera cannot thrive in sandy soil) coupled with warm
days, cool evenings, and next-to-no rainfall (irrigation is widely used) create ideal conditions
for growing the great French red grapes such as Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah.
The long growing season – blessed with two more hours per day of sunlight than
California (who knew?) – allows the big reds to fully ripen, while the cool evenings
bring a freshness seldom seen even in … yes, California. Washington State Cabernets
display a robustness coupled with elegance and style; Merlots have a spicy complexity
and lush depth; and Syrahs are vibrant and ripely fruity with a Rhône-style smoked meat
character and minerality. Washington’s secret is now yours to share.

Horse Heaven Hills
This wine is ranked #43 in Wine
Spectator’s 2010 Top 100 list.
TASTING NOTE: Dark, supple and
generous with its blackberry
and black currant flavors, playing
against superfine tannins on an
open-textured finish. Floral, savory
overtones add depth. Best from
wonderful mouthfilling texture, a refined mousse,
and a zippy acidity. Buttered toast, green apple
and honey delightfully pave the way for the long,
layered and fresh finish. Luxurious and delicious,
TASTING NOTE: ... this blend of pinot noir,
Cabernet Sauvignon can do extremely well in
Ontario when the climate cooperates, and it
cooperated brilliantly in 2007. The fruit was
harvested when it was both phenolically and sugar
grapes at harvest). The result was a wine with fine
balance. This 100% Cab Sauv is filled with cassis,
DIRTY LAUNDRY
BORDELLO 2008
VQA Similkameen Valley
The origins of Dirty Laundry Vineyards’ name are
delightfully unseemly. In the early 20th century,
the town of Summerland was a centre for furtraders
and gold-miners. A laundry was opened to
clean the clothes of the men who came through
town. The owner quickly realized his back rooms
could have another use, as a bawdy-house and
gambling den. The winery’s name is a tribute
to this unsavoury history. Their Bordello red is a
blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The
2008 is a big, flavourful, age-worthy wonder that
is bound to attract awards and acclaim, as the
2007 vintage did.
TASTING NOTE: Some theorists believe that all
the oldest variety on record. A brilliant yellow,
this Muscat exhibits a lovely floral nose. Further
elements of pear, apple and grapey notes
As
the winter wonderland settles in around us,
it’s time to cozy up inside with things that warm our hearts:
friends and loved ones, tables laden with home-cooked comfort
foods, and stemware brimming with richly flavourful wine.
VINTAGES’ experts have uncovered these two tasty reds that pair
magically with stick-to-your-ribs seasonal dishes. One is a stylishly
structured French beauty; the other, a generously plush Malbec
from Argentina. Whichever one graces your glass, it’s sure to
make for a warm welcome.
Your reputation for choosing the
perfect wine is sure to take off when
you confidently glide in to your
next dinner party with this premiumquality
Shiraz. Two Hands has
become one of Australia’s most
sought after top-flight producers.
Palates will soar on thermals of
blueberry, plum, vanilla and
chocolate when this delicious wine
is paired with a leg of lamb or
roast duck breast. Truly, the sky’s
the limit.
TWO HANDS ANGELS’ SHARE
SHIRAZ 2009
McLaren Vale, South Australia
009480 (D) 750 mL $27.95
TASTING NOTE: Bold but tight. Smooth
and delicious. This is a good release of
Angel’s Share. Blueberry and plum, vanilla
and toast. Maybe some milk chocolate
too. It’s juicy and balanced, trails a good
slick of tannin, and finishes warm but
satisfyingly well flavoured. It has a slight
dip in the mid-palate, but it’s otherwise
mouthfilling. Good stuff. Drink: 2010-
2014. Score: 91 (Campbell Mattinson,
