Good Health Comes From Healthy Habits
by Beverly Dunford
www.StrengthFromWithin.biz
Beverly Dunford shared her first five suggestions in the
previous issue of Super Raw Life magazine. In each
issue, we will share a few more of her Good Health Tips.
Following these suggestions for healthy habits could put
you at your ideal weight for optimal health within a 12
month time period. Good health and staying in shape
are not about "going on a diet". It’s about "LIVING A
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE". Follow these suggestions for
one month and see for yourself what kind of a difference
they make in your life.
Grocery shop after eating a well balanced nourishing
snack or meal so you are not tempted to purchase quick
and easy junk foods. If you do find yourself feeling
hungry at the store, purchase a fresh ripe banana to eat,
it will give you the sugar high you are most likely craving
and will provide your body with the needed nutrient
potassium. Raw almonds are a good protein source to
keep with you at all times for a quick healthy snack when
you get feeling hungry. Feed the hunger while it is small,
when we feel famished we are more likely to over-indulge.
Eating 6 small meals throughout the day will keep your
blood sugar level more stable and help keep your waistline
trimmer, as starving all day then gorging on huge
amounts of food at one big meal in the evening stretches
out our stomachs and causes the body to store fat as it
fears it won’t be fed again for a long time. Eat your more
substantial meal at noon so you can burn it off over the
course of the afternoon, and then eat a smaller meal in
the evening. This will help you sleep better and your body
can digest the food better. If you are hungry before going
to bed eat a fresh banana so you aren’t focused on feeling
hungry as you lay in bed to go to sleep. Bananas will help
you sleep better because they contain Tryptophan. Fresh
fruit is only in the stomach 20 minutes and doesn’t have
to be digested so it won’t interrupt the digestive cycle that
began after you ate your last meal.
Our bodies work in four cycles:
1. Ingestion – This is when we take the food into our
bodies. Remember it is best to chew your food to a liquid
state before swallowing it. Your body creates saliva as
you chew in your mouth which helps aide in the digestive
process. If we swallow before we chew very much we
haven’t given the body time to produce very much saliva.
2. Digestion is the process by which ingested food is
broken down into a form that can then be absorbed and
assimilated into the tissues of the body.
3. Absorption / Assimilation is the uptake of fluids or
other substances by the tissues of the body.
4. Elimination / Defecation which applies to the entire
process of excretion of metabolic waste products, incl.
from the blood via the kidneys and urinary tract as well as
defecation of solid wastes. When we interfere with these
cycles we back up our bowels because we don’t allow them
proper time for elimination before we force them back
into digestion. Eating food in the late evening hours will
force them back into digestion. Our body needs about an
8 hour cleansing period without eating so it can properly
absorb and assimilate the nutrients it needs and still be
able to slough off the wastes before we force it back into a
digestive phase.
Recipes
Drinking a few cups of plain green tea, no sugar, honey,
sweeteners, milk, cream etc. added each day will give
you a good dose of “greens” and help the water to taste
better. Making a double dose using a second tea bag with
your favorite herb tea such as raspberry or blueberry is a
great way to add some healthy flavor. If you must have
a sweetener use raw green Stevia made from birch as a
sweetener as it is one of the healthiest sweeteners available
on the market.
Squeezing a fresh lemon on your salad and using red
wine vinegar as your salad dressing will give you better
health and vitality. Or perhaps make an herb dressing
using 1 ounce vinegar, 1 ounce natural unrefined sesame
seed oil or extra virgin olive oil and 1 teaspoon of Italian
seasoning then throw in a dash of cheyenne pepper, garlic
powder, and onion powder.
