National Anthem<br />

From 1825 the Godfrey family started to dominate military music. Charles<br />

became Bandmaster in 1825 and his son; Fred took over the band from his<br />

father in 1863 and served until 1880.<br />

Both had a profound effect on Military music; Charles was editor of the<br />

Julien's Military Journal and Fred became music editor of the Boosey Military<br />

Band Journal.<br />

Between them they orchestrated hundreds of works for military band mainly<br />

opera and theatre music of the day, many of which are still performed by<br />

bands.<br />

At Scutari in 1854 the British troops, comprising the army of the east destined<br />

for the Crimea, held a grand review on the birthday of Queen Victoria.<br />

There were some 16,000 men on parade, and while their appearance and<br />

marching were perfect and the cheering deafening,<br />

the massed bands struck up<br />

God Save the Queen. [Music]<br />

" This single performance led to a re-evaluation of the British military band<br />

system and in 1857 Kneller Hall opened its doors for the first time.<br />
