The electromagnetic spectrum shows us how the various frequencies and
wave-lengths of electromagnetic waves are categorized.
Wavelength Depends on Temperature
Wavelength is measured in microns. One micron is equal to 1/1,000,000 of a
meter or about 0.00004 inches (a human hair is about 50 microns in
diameter). Of particular interest is the infrared portion of the spectrum, from
about 0.1 to 100 microns, since most of the energy radiated by a heater is in
this region.
The amount of energy radiated by a heater and the wavelengths of this
energy is determined by the heater’s temperature.
For any given heater temperature, the amount of energy radiated can be
plotted as a function of the energy’s wavelength. When plotted for a series of
heater temperatures, this produces a graph called “Planck’s Curves” after Max
Planck, its originator. Figures 2 through 4 are Planck’s Curves plotted with
various scales.
