29 SPLIT BOX: If dovetailing a box and then splitting the box in half to <strong>for</strong>m the lid, it is possible to<br />

increase the width of one of the pins (or the width of the space between the pins) to allow <strong>for</strong> the width<br />

of the saw cut. To do this you need a spacer the same width as the saw kerf, which is placed between the<br />

workpiece and the stop <strong>for</strong> cutting some of the joint only. It is best to mark a line on all pieces where the<br />

finished box is going to be split. Start by positioning the workpiece as usual to get the joint layout<br />

required, but put the spacer between the work and the stop when locking the stop in place. Working from<br />

the STOP side of the workpiece, cut the joint as far as the line and then remove the spacer be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

finishing the cut. This same procedure is used <strong>for</strong> both halves of each joint. It is worth practicing this<br />

method be<strong>for</strong>e starting a project, so you fully understand how it works:<br />
