The populations present in Brampton Wood and Monks Wood have been determined as ssp.<br />

portula. The remaining population has not yet been determined but is likely to be this<br />

subspecies also. It remains much diminished at Brampton Wood following <strong>the</strong> culverting <strong>of</strong> a<br />

ditch in 2010.<br />

This summer annual species is an obligate hemiparasite <strong>of</strong> various woody and herbaceous<br />

species, predominantly found on <strong>the</strong> margins <strong>of</strong> ancient oak woods and in <strong>the</strong>ir clearings and<br />

rides. It occasionally grows on roadside verges and hedgebanks where <strong>the</strong>se at one time<br />

bordered woodland. It is <strong>the</strong>rmophilous and largely restricted to <strong>the</strong> areas <strong>of</strong> Britain with <strong>the</strong><br />

most continental climatic regime, where it grows on calcium-rich soils derived from boulder<br />

clay (Stewart et al. 1994).<br />
