An uncommon fern <strong>of</strong> mossy tree trunks in ancient woodland and, although <strong>the</strong>re is a lack <strong>of</strong><br />

recent records, old walls. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old records <strong>for</strong> Polypodium vulgare may be referable to<br />

this species.<br />

This species is believed to be restricted as a native to <strong>the</strong> coasts <strong>of</strong> south and eastern<br />

England from Dorset to North Norfolk (Cope & Gray, 2009). Our populations are not a vast<br />

distance from <strong>the</strong> East Anglian coast and have found an alternate niche on sparsely<br />

vegetated substrates associated with old clay and gravel workings.<br />

This fern has always been rare in <strong>Huntingdonshire</strong> and only a few plants are known at each<br />

site, growing on <strong>the</strong> banks <strong>of</strong> small woodland streams. The only o<strong>the</strong>r site where it has been<br />

recorded is Holme Fen and it was last seen <strong>the</strong>re in 1846.
