It may be because I
am getting older that I
am more concerned about
children and youth. Of
course my grandkids are
in that group so that may
be another explanation.
A recent survey of
the millennial generation
(those ranging in
age from 10-30) shows
them to be the least
religiously observant
generation since survey
research began charting
religious behavior. Onein-four
is unaffiliated
with any religion.
A youth director recently
shared that he had
found those coming into
his sixth grade youth department
to be woefully
ignorant of basic biblical
facts. Professors at
Christian colleges have
lamented the fact that
many freshmen have
limited understanding
of biblical truths.
As our society becomes
more pluralistic,
it is frightening to think
many of our young people
will have a poor foundation
from which to build
a worldview that will
stand the test of critical
thinking.
It is easy to blame
the church, and there
may be some reason for
that, but I believe we
must first look in the
mirror and in the words
of the comic strip character,
“Pogo,” “We have
met the enemy and they
are us.”
God instituted the
family unit as the agency
to transmit truth to
the children of the next
generation.
Deuteronomy 5:29
states, “Oh, that their
hearts would be inclined
to fear me and keep all
my commandments always,
so that it might go
well with them and their
children forever.”
The first order of the
day for parents is that
they set the example.
Do they see Mom and
Dad reading the Bible
on a consistent basis?
Do they see a lifestyle
of comfort and convenience
valued over one
that mirrors sacrifice
and compassionate service?
Is the discussion over
the dinner table one of
criticism and cynicism
or a discussion about
ministry opportunities
God led them to that
day?
Deuteronomy 6:5-9
gives a platform for religious
instruction that
we would do well to look
to today.
Methods will change,
but the basic pattern
remains the same. Of
primary importance is
that the parents are to
“love the Lord your God
with all your heart, soul,
and strength.” When

Dec. 23.
Those bringing toys
are asked to leave them
unwrapped. It’s asked
that the minimum value
of the toys be $5.
the children see this as
a priority during those
formative years, it will
plant seeds that will
remain.
Then, parents are to
impress the teachings
of God on the hearts
of the children. They
are to “talk about them
when they sit at home,
when they walk (or
drive) along the road,
when they lie down and
when they get up.” In
other words, the aura of
God’s presence in all of
life’s activities should be
recognized.
John Newton’s father
left the family when he
was a small child. But
his mother was a devout
Christian and spent
many hours sharing
Bible verses, songs and
teachings with young
John, who could read
when he was four years
old.
She died while he was
child, and he soon set out
on a life of sin and degradation.
But later, when
he feared for his life, the
teachings of his mother
and verses of scripture
that never left his heart
set him on a path toward
conversion.
Psalm 78:3,4 tells us,
“What we have heard and
known, what our fathers
have told us. We will not
hide them from their children;
we will tell the next
generation the praiseworthy
deeds of the Lord his
power, and the wonders
he has done.”

Beutler inauguration next week
Area residents are invited to the inaugural ceremony
for Southwestern Oklahoma State University
President Randy Beutler Wednesday afternoon on the
Weatherford campus.
The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. in the Fine
Arts Center on the SWOSU campus. A reception will
follow. Admission is free, the university said.
Later that evening, a dinner will be held on the
Weatherford campus to raise money for a SWOSU
Museum and Archive Center in downtown Weatherford.
Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry will be guest speaker.
Brian Adler, chair of the inauguration committee, said
the dinner event is sold out, but a waiting list has been
established in case of last-minute cancellations.
A dinner in Sayre will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday

All Southwestern Oklahoma State University
students are invited to the annual free President’s
Pancake Breakfast from 10 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. Tuesday,
in the SWOSU cafeteria at the Memorial Student
Union.
President Randy Beutler and the administrative
council will be serving pancakes and sausage to students
as a kick-off to finals week.
It is also the eve of President Beutler’s inauguration
as the 17th president of the school.
Cindy Dougherty, dean of students, reminds
students that they do not have to be on an SWOSU
meal plan to attend and enjoy the all-you-can-eat free
feast.
Also going on that night will be women’s and men’s
Bulldog basketball games at 6 and 8 p.m. in Rankin
Williams Fieldhouse.
The U.S. Marine Corps, Mu Phi Epsilon and Collegiate
Activities Board (CAB) will be taking donations
for Toys for Tots.
All students who donate a toy and/or wear a
Rankin Rowdies shirt will be eligible to win a Wii
provided by CAB to be given away at the halftime of
the men’s game.
