Yet the addition <strong>of</strong> ostensibly Turkish slippers challenges the easy identification<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sambo as Zip Coon or another well-dressed minstrelsy stereotype (see figure 45). He<br />

wears a red jacket that suggests the minstrel player in the tradition <strong>of</strong> Bannerman’s text.<br />

At the same time, he wears a pair <strong>of</strong> bluejean overalls and “oriental” slippers. The result<br />

is an ambiguous assortment <strong>of</strong> various western and eastern stereotypes.<br />
