endeavoring to change its direction.<br />
By any sensible measure, <strong>Churchill</strong> was a good friend of the Jews, one<br />
of their best in high government circles anywhere. But the Jews' national<br />
cause never was, <strong>and</strong> never could be, the highest priority of <strong>Churchill</strong> or<br />
his government. This rudimentary reality caused difficulties but no surprises<br />
for thoughtful Zionists. <strong>Zionism</strong> aimed to create a Jewish state,<br />
after all, precisely because otherwise there would be none in the world<br />
whose highest priority is the interest of the Jewish people.
