20,1671.* <strong>The</strong> house <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> were owned by Robert Rowls of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, immediately<br />
afterward; <strong>and</strong> he owned the estate <strong>in</strong> <strong>1700</strong>. How much longer the house stood is not known.<br />

Samuel Russell House. This lot was also a part of the homestead of Lot Conant, as early as 1663,<br />
probably <strong>in</strong> 1657. He removed to that part of Salem which is now Beverly, then called Bass river, <strong>in</strong> 1667;<br />
<strong>and</strong> sold this lot, with the house thereon, to V<strong>in</strong>son Stilson of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, cordwa<strong>in</strong>er, March 10, 1669-70.†<br />
Mr. Stilson conveyed the bouse <strong>and</strong> lot, for fifty-four pounds, to Jonathan Bridgham of Boston, tanner,<br />
Aug. 2, 1677.‡ Mr. Bridgham conveyed the same estate to Samuel Russell of <strong>Marblehead</strong> June 29, 1678; §<br />
<strong>and</strong> Mr. Russell owned it <strong>in</strong> <strong>1700</strong>. Apparently the house was then st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Richard Hanover House. This lot of l<strong>and</strong> belonged to Moses Maverick early, <strong>and</strong> he conveyed it with the<br />
lot marked Samuel Clark to Matthew Clark of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, Feb. 18, 1663-4. || Mr. Clark<br />
conveyed this part of the lot to Edmund Gale of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, on the same day.* Mr. Gale erected a<br />
dwell<strong>in</strong>g house thereon ; <strong>and</strong>, for eighty pounds <strong>and</strong> seven shill<strong>in</strong>gs, conveyed the house <strong>and</strong> lot to Richard<br />
Thistle, of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, June 28, 1669,† For eighty pounds, Mr. Thistle conveyed the same<br />
estate to Richard Hanover of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, mar<strong>in</strong>er, Oct. 24, 1670‡ Mr. Hanover (or Hanaford) died <strong>in</strong><br />
1709, hav<strong>in</strong>g devised this estate to his daughter Merriam Hanover. His daughter, Sarah Ashton was then<br />
liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the house. Merriam conveyed certa<strong>in</strong> rooms <strong>in</strong> the house <strong>and</strong> one-half of the l<strong>and</strong> to her only brother<br />
Ebenezer "Hannifer" of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, Nov. 9, 1714.§ <strong>The</strong> leanto garret <strong>and</strong> lower room are<br />
mentioned <strong>in</strong> the deed. <strong>The</strong> other half of the estate also came to Ebenezer, <strong>and</strong>, before 1740, he apparently<br />
removed the old house.<br />

Samuel Clark Lot. This was a part of the lot conveyed by Moses Maverick of <strong>Marblehead</strong> to Matthew<br />
Clark of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, Feb. 18, 1663-4.|| Mr. Clark died <strong>in</strong> the autumn of 1684, possessed of the lot,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> his will gave his estate to his wife Abigail Clark. It came <strong>in</strong>to the h<strong>and</strong>s of his son Samuel Clark.<br />

Ambrose Gale Houses. Samuel Morgan of Beverly, planter <strong>and</strong> cooper, owned this lot as early as 1670.<br />
For seventy pounds, he conveyed to Ambrose Gale of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, merchant, that part of the lot ly<strong>in</strong>g<br />
south of the dashes, with the old house thereon, <strong>in</strong> 1682. On that part of the lot ly<strong>in</strong>g north of the<br />
dashes, Mr. Morgan built a new house before Aug. 22, 1681, when for sixty pounds, he conveyed to Mr.<br />
Gale the l<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> house.** Shortly before his death, which occurred suddenly, says his widow, <strong>in</strong> August,<br />
1708, Mr. Gale apparently removed the old houses <strong>and</strong> built a double house, possibly by the union of the two<br />
build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

John Ch<strong>in</strong>n House. This lot was very early <strong>in</strong> the possession of Mr. Thomas Pitman, <strong>and</strong> was part of an<br />
orchard belong<strong>in</strong>g to Francis Johnson of <strong>Marblehead</strong> <strong>in</strong> 1655. Mr. Johnson was called of Boston,<br />
gentleman. Sept. 29, 1670, when he conveyed this lot <strong>and</strong> some l<strong>and</strong> adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to Mr. Thaddeus Riddan of<br />
Lynn, merchant.* Mr. Riddan removed to <strong>Marblehead</strong> before July 30, 1677, when he conveyed this lot to<br />
John Ch<strong>in</strong>n of <strong>Marblehead</strong>.† Mr. Ch<strong>in</strong>n was a cooper, <strong>and</strong> built a house upon the lot; dy<strong>in</strong>g possessed of the<br />
house <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> before Sept. 23, 1712, when adm<strong>in</strong>istration was granted upon his estate. <strong>The</strong> homestead<br />
was <strong>in</strong>ventoried at one hundred <strong>and</strong> five pounds. Mr. Ch<strong>in</strong>n left a widow, Rebecca, <strong>and</strong> children, George<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>n, Elizabeth Ch<strong>in</strong>n <strong>and</strong> Rebecca Ch<strong>in</strong>n. Rebecca Ch<strong>in</strong>n died —: 12 mo: 1717, <strong>and</strong> George Ch<strong>in</strong>n<br />
