him.§ Mr. Ward became a v<strong>in</strong>tner, <strong>and</strong>, for one hundred <strong>and</strong> seventy pounds, conveyed this lot <strong>and</strong> the<br />

build<strong>in</strong>gs thereon to Ambrose Gale of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, merchant, March 30, 1686.|| Mr. Gale, for love,<br />

conveyed to his son Ambrose Gale of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, mar<strong>in</strong>er, the house, shop <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> northeasterly of the<br />

brook, Aug. 8, 1695. Mr. Gale, the father, died, possessed of the barn <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> on the southwestern side of<br />

the brook, <strong>in</strong> August, 1708. <strong>The</strong> son, Ambrose Gale, died, possessed of his lot <strong>and</strong> house, 1: 4 mo: 1717,<br />

<strong>and</strong> his three surviv<strong>in</strong>g children, Elizabeth, wife of John Blackler, Mary, wife of Nicholas Edgecome,<br />

<strong>and</strong> Deborah, wife of John Stadden, all the sons-<strong>in</strong>-law be<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fishermen, divided the<br />

estate Nov. 9, 1719. Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Blackler <strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Stadden released to Mrs.<br />

Edgecome the southwestern half of the "old mansion house" <strong>and</strong> part of the leanto, the l<strong>in</strong>e runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />

through the stack of chimneys;* <strong>and</strong> Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Edgecome <strong>and</strong> Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Blackler released to Mrs.<br />

Stadden the northeastern half of the house.† Mrs. Stadden was a widow July 27, 1744 when, for forty<br />

pounds, she conveyed her half of the house <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> to Joseph Swett of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, merchant.‡ Mr. Swett<br />

died before July 20, 1761, when the estate was divided, this half of the house <strong>and</strong> lot be<strong>in</strong>g assigned to Sarah<br />

wife of Benjam<strong>in</strong> Marston of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, merchant.§ Mr. <strong>and</strong> Mrs. Marston conveyed the same half house<br />

<strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>, for fifty pounds to Elias Hammond of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, Aug. 3, 1761. || <strong>The</strong> house was<br />

probably gone soon after.<br />

Francis Richardson House, Francis Haynes of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, gunsmith, <strong>and</strong> wife Elizabeth, for eightyfour<br />

pounds, conveyed this lot, with the house <strong>and</strong> smith's shop thereon, to Francis Richardson of<br />

<strong>Marblehead</strong>, cooper, Aug. 10, 1699. Mr. Richardson built an addition to the house on its western end;<br />

<strong>and</strong> died, possessed of the estate, Dec. 2, 1727, at the age of fifty-seven. <strong>The</strong> estate was divided <strong>in</strong><br />

December, 1733, <strong>and</strong> the old end of the house with the leanto <strong>and</strong> that part of the l<strong>and</strong> was assigned to his<br />

son John Richardson, <strong>and</strong> the new part of the house <strong>and</strong> that part of the lot was assigned to his son<br />

William Richardson.<br />

Samuel Reed House. This lot belonged to James Watts of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman, before March 22, 1671,<br />

when he conveyed it to Samuel Reed of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman.** Mr. Reed conveyed the l<strong>and</strong> with the "old<br />

house <strong>and</strong> old barn" thereon to Capt. John Calley of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, mar<strong>in</strong>er, March 29, 1716.†† Probably<br />

the house stood but a few years longer.<br />

Thomas Ellis House. James Watts owned this lot <strong>in</strong> 1671 <strong>and</strong> as late as 1695; <strong>and</strong> with the house<br />

thereon it subsequently belonged to Thomas Ellis of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, who died before Jan. 19, 1714, when<br />

adm<strong>in</strong>istration upon his estate was granted to his k<strong>in</strong>sman John White of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman. <strong>The</strong> house<br />

was then called "a little old house." Mr. White, then a coaster, as adm<strong>in</strong>istrator, conveyed one-half of the house<br />

<strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong> which belonged to the estate at that time to Edward Norris of Salem, jo<strong>in</strong>er, Dec. 26, 1715;* <strong>and</strong><br />

Mr. Norris reconveyed the estate, to Mr. White, Jan. 30, 1715.† <strong>The</strong> house was gone before April 15, 1738,<br />

when Mr. White conveyed the lot to Samuel Twisden of <strong>Marblehead</strong>, fisherman.‡<br />

Thomas Pitman Lot. This lot of swamp was laid out to Lt. Samuel Ward, June 19, 1673.§ Capta<strong>in</strong><br />

Ward lived <strong>in</strong> <strong>Marblehead</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g a v<strong>in</strong>tner, <strong>and</strong> conveyed this lot to Thomas Pitman, sr., of Salem, planter,<br />

Jan. 28, 1684.|| Mr. Pitman died, possessed of the lot, <strong>in</strong> the summer of 1694. This l<strong>and</strong> was then appraised at<br />

fifteen pounds. In the division of the estate this lot was divided among four or five of the children. <strong>The</strong> son
