anchor chain rose out of the water. As the leader raised his baton the<br />
drummer looked around appealing for support. It was not forthcoming.<br />
The leader glanced at him and nodded. Helplessly he swung his sticks<br />
and as the baton fell, smote a resounding stroke.<br />
On the boom of the drum followed a chorus of yelping. It was, as<br />
the harassed Supply Sergeant said, more like a flock of coyotes at drill<br />
than one frightened puppy. The Colonel was in the front rank and for<br />
an instant he was puzzled. Then he guessed. He looked around and<br />
saw that the Brigadier and the ship Captain were too far away to hear.<br />
Then to the band he commanded in stertorian tones, "Without the<br />
drum! Play louder!"<br />
