survey revealed that preparation and sell<strong>in</strong>g of alcoholic beverages seemed profitable<br />

(Table 5). The farmers could obta<strong>in</strong> net benefit of NR 13.5 per kg by sell<strong>in</strong>g good<br />

quality alcohol at the rate of NR 18 per bottle, which is a very attractive <strong>in</strong>come<br />

for Nepalese small entrepreneurs.<br />

5.3 Gender <strong>in</strong>volvement <strong>in</strong> crop production and utilization<br />

A household survey was conducted <strong>in</strong> the <strong>project</strong> villages with the aim to<br />

identify the role of male and female farmers <strong>in</strong> f<strong>in</strong>ger millet crop production,<br />

utilization and gender-based benefit shar<strong>in</strong>g. The survey revealed that women<br />

superseded men <strong>in</strong> all the activities i.e. crop production, sale as well as access<br />

and control over the <strong>in</strong>come obta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>from</strong> millet irrespective of the sites and<br />

the communities (Table 6). In the Gurung community, males had very little role<br />

as compared to those <strong>in</strong> the Brahm<strong>in</strong> and Chettri communities except beverage<br />

production. The Gurung was a dom<strong>in</strong>ant ethnic community at Kalabang followed<br />

by disadvantaged groups whereas Brahm<strong>in</strong> and Chettri were the major ethnic<br />

groups at Ralmare.<br />
