6.3 Participatory variety selection<br />

Participatory variety selection (PVS) is a farmer-participatory approach for identify<strong>in</strong>g<br />

improved crop cultivars or varieties. It is a rapid and cost-effective process of<br />

identify<strong>in</strong>g farmer-preferred cultivars. In 2003, six varieties/genotypes (Okhale, GPU<br />

25, GE 0122, GE 5176, GE 5016 and ACC.523-1) identified <strong>from</strong> on-farm evaluation <strong>in</strong><br />

2002, were distributed to many farmers to compare their performance over farmers’<br />

local variety. Average performance of PVS varieties for quantitative traits like<br />

maturity, plant height and gra<strong>in</strong> yield were recorded <strong>from</strong> farmers’ fields. Farmers<br />

ranked PVS varieties <strong>from</strong> their own perspectives <strong>in</strong> each site. The performance of<br />

PVS varieties is given <strong>in</strong> Table 9.<br />

Similarly, four promis<strong>in</strong>g varieties (Okhale 1, GPU 25, ACC.523-1 and GE 5016)<br />

were tested <strong>in</strong> 64 farmers’ fields under PVS <strong>in</strong> 2004 for further test<strong>in</strong>g and scal<strong>in</strong>g-up<br />

<strong>in</strong> and around <strong>project</strong> villages. The PVS activity was implemented <strong>in</strong> collaboration<br />

with two women farmers’ groups, namely, Marga Joyoti POWER Women Group and<br />

Community Development Women Group at Kalabang and Ralmare sites, respectively.<br />

Each farmer was given one variety to compare with the local variety. The performance
