THE international buying bench maintained its strong presence
on the second day of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in
Sydney yesterday.
All up, foreign buyers have now secured 57 yearlings for
$16,120,000.
Heading up the day two purchases was the Redoute’s Choice
colt from Clean Sweep, which went to Chantilly Bloodstock for
$750,000. The colt followed on from an $850,000 Redoute’s
Choice-Special Harmony filly in the opening session for
Chantilly.
to $440,000 for a Bernardini filly.
Adrian Nicoll’s BBA Ireland has
secured four youngsters during
the first two sessions, including
a Fastnet Rock filly for $360,000
today.
George Moore Bloodstock has
also made its presence felt at the
sale, with three purchases – colts
by Fastnet Rock, Tale Of The Cat
and Pins - for $890,000.
“We have had a lot of luck with
Australian horses and we have a
good relationship with the stud
masters down here,” Moore
said.
“We believe Admiration can be
our next star up there. He has
won five races and we’re pretty
sure he’s a Group 1 horse. We
bought him out of this sale two
years ago (for $625,000).”
Moore said star performer
Happy Zero (also purchased out
of the Easter Sale) is now back
in Australia and is likely to race
for the John, Wayne and Michael
Hawkes stable this year.
He said the Easter sale had
been very competitive, but was
pleased with the three colts he
has secured.
“The Fastnet Rocks are selling really well and this was a great
striding horse,” he said.
“The Tale of The Cat was cheap in my opinion. He’s not your
typical Tale Of The Cat, but John Hawkes told me he resembled
Real Saga (Group 2 winning colt). He’s a nice big horse, but well
balanced too.
“The Pins colt is from the family of Starcraft. We went further
than we expected for him, but Bart Cummings was the
underbidder and that’s always a good sign. We have actually had
a few tussles with him recently. We beat him on a Shamardal
at Magic Millions but then he beat us on another one later in
the same sale.”
Thursday, April 7th, 2011 4
The parade ring KATRINA PARTRIDGE
Peter Moody. An audible groan arose from the crowd as bidding
stalled at $975,000, a seemingly endless minute passing before
the seven-figure mark was finally achieved. Another two bids –
including the successful firing shot of $1.025million – were
required to secure the colt.
Understandably the winners were then surrounded by the media
hack pack. Moody was left with a wry smile and the knowledge
that he will, at least, be putting the saddle on Black Caviar this
Saturday afternoon.
When asked if the Hawkes Team was expecting to pay that amount
of money Wayne responded: “We didn’t know how much we would
have to spend to get him to be honest. We didn’t really know. We
also couldn’t see who we were bidding against given where we
were standing. We didn’t know if it was Peter or someone else.
“We are very happy though that we secured the best colt in the
sale,” Wayne added, but declined to name names regarding the
colt’s ownership apart from saying, “a group of stable clients”.
“It seemed like $600,000 was going to do it, but the two boys
obviously wanted him. I’m thrilled to bits,” the colt’s breeder Ric
Jamieson said later.
The importance of the result was not lost on Patinack Farm
chairman Nathan Tinkler. “For Patinack Farm to play a part in
the first yearling in Australian history, by a first-crop sire, to have
made over $1million is a tremendous achievement,” Tinkler said.
“It really does speak volumes for the quality of mares Casino
Prince has seen visit him in his first three seasons at stud. We
are absolutely delighted with the result for both the owners and
Makybe for presenting him so well.”
While the spotlight was shining on Casino Prince, it was Redoute’s
Choice (Danehill) that continued to belt out the big sellers. So far
the Arrowfield stallion has seven of the top 10 sellers and is the
leading sire by average, his 26 lots sold averaging $461,154.
Underlining the strength of the market were the 23 horses that
have sold for $500,000 or more. They included the James Bester
and Demi O’Byrne purchase of the Redoute’s Choice colt out of
champion mare Champagne (Zabeel) (Lot 184) that was knocked
down for $850,000.
James Bester confirmed that the colt would stay and race in
Australia, but said the owners had not yet decided on a trainer.
“He forms part of a stallion prospect fund which Coolmore and
some other clients have put together to identify early prospects,”
Bester explained. “He is by a champion sire out of a champion
weight-for-age mare. Some may say she has been disappointing
as a broodmare but I have seen every one of her yearlings and
all had front leg issues. This colt is flawless in every respect. He
looks like a stallion already. He has the most amazing hind leg
action.”
Bester and O’Byrne combined forces again later in the day to
secure the brother (Lot 252) to Group One winner Wanted (Fastnet
Rock) and a half brother to this season’s Group Three winner and
Group One performer Shrapnel (Charge Forward), paying $650,000
for the Highgrove consigned colt.
“I thought he was definitely worth that amount on physique and
pedigree,” said consignor Ron Gilbert whose Highgrove Stud has
enjoyed a sterling sale.
Gerard Larrieu from Chantilly Bloodstock paid $750,000 for Lot
191 – the Redoute’s Choice colt out of Group One New Zealand Two
Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Clean Sweep (End Sweep),
a colt described by Arrowfield Operations Manager Sam Fairgray as,
“a very typical Redoute’s Choice and one of our nicest colts.”
Mark Kavanagh went to $450,000 to secure the three-quarter
brother to his Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Shocking
(Street Cry) (Lot 341). The colt was offered for sale by Widden
Stud and is by Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 2000m) and Breeder’s Cup
Juvenile winner (Gr 1, 1800m), Street Sense (Street Cry), who
stands at Sheikh Mohammed’s Darley Stud in the Hunter Valley.
“We liked the colt a lot and were prepared to buy him on spec,
without a specific order,” Kavanagh said. “Some good stable
clients watching the sale have already bought in and there are
still a few shares available.”
At the end of business yesterday, 254 lots had sold, grossing $61
million at an average of $240,157 and a median of $185,000
with a clearance rate of 77 per cent.
“To have an average up nearly 10 per cent is a very satisfying
result at this stage,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said
at sale end. “The clearance rate today was a little disappointing,
but as yesterday’s figures show, it can be expected to improve as
post-sale negotiations are completed.”
Thursday, April 7th, 2011 6
One of the things that always fascinates
in looking at pedigrees, me at least, is
how proven female families can always be
relied upon to come up with a good horse,
even if there might be the odd blank
generation, writes Darryl Sherer.
Mares that throw Group One winners are
usually related to Group One winners or
other mares that have thrown Group One
winners. There might be the odd spare
generation in between but, as the saying
goes, the apple doesn’t fall far from the
tree and I tend to look at these pedigrees
as ‘cluster’ families. The female members
usually leave at least one good runner,
usually two or three, and then they keep
producing.
Last Saturday’s BMW H.E. Tancred
Stakes (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Cedarberg
(Helenus) is another example of this. The
best winner by a long way sired to date by
the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner
Helenus, Cedarberg is empty up close
but descends from Knighton House (Pall
Mall), a good runner herself and a sister
to Reform (Pall Mall).
This is a family that has been nurtured and
developed in partnership by the late Sir
Michael Sobell and Sir Arnold Weinstock
over decades.
Reform won 11 of his 14 starts,
highlighted by the Champion Stakes (Gr 1,
1m2f) but he was essentially a miler with
victories in the St James’s Palace Stakes
(Gr 1, 1 mile), Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1
mile) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1,
1 mile). Knighton House shared the same
racing aptitude as her brother, winning
the Prix de la Calonne (Listed, 1 mile) at
Deauville over the straight 1600 metres
and finishing runner-up in the Coronation
Stakes (Gr 1, 1 mile).
At stud she left two stakeswinners, the
Royal Ascot King Edward VII Stakes (Gr 2,
1m4f) winner Open Day (Northfields) and
the Prix la Rochette (Gr 3, 1400m) winner
River Knight (Riverman). A stakesplaced
daughter was School Bell (Baldric)
who came to Australia and left the WA
Champion Fillies Stakes (Gr 3, 1600m)
winner Taj Bell (Taj Rossi), herself the
granddam of Cup winners Cardinal Colours
(Chief’s Crown) (in Perth) and Lord Serry
(Islero) (in Queensland).
PEDIGREE PAGE
CEDARBERG
ANZ
Cedarberg SPORTPIX
It is two daughters of Knighton House that
have excelled at stud and stay true to my
cluster theory.
Sea Venture (Diatome) left the stakeswinner
Sailor’s Mate (Shirley Heights) who in turn
threw three stakeswinners but she is put
in the shade by Grecian Sea (Homeric),
who won at Saint-Cloud and is the dam
of the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner
Hellenic (Darshaan). Hellenic is the dam of
three Group One winners in the Champion
mare Islington (Sadler’s Wells), Greek
Dance (Sadler’s Wells) and Mountain
High (Danehill) plus a further two Listed
winners.
Troyes (Troy), another daughter of Grecian
Sea, is the dam of the Ribblesdale
Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Mont Etoile
(Montjeu) and is the granddam of three
stakeswinners.
Closer to home, Cedarberg is out
of Infrared, an unraced daughter of
Spectrum, ironically enough also bred and
raced by the Weinstock family. Winner of
the Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1 mile),
Spectrum stretched out to a mile and a
quarter in winning the Champion Stakes
(Gr 1, 1m2f).
For a horse bred the way he is - by the
champion racehorse and sire Rainbow
Quest (Blushing Groom) – and as good
a runner as he was, Spectrum probably
proved disappointing as a stallion but he
is such a well-bred horses that it will come
as no surprise to see him do well as a
broodmare sire.
Interestingly another of his Group One
winners as a broodmare sire is the North
American Turf and Dirt winner Winchester,
a son of Theatrical, whose sire Nureyev
is a three-quarter brother to Helenus’s
grandsire Fairy King (Northern Dancer).
Infrared is a half-sister to the Talindert
Stakes (Listed, 1100m) winner Comic
Dame (Rory’s Jester) with her dam a
daughter of Gorytus (Nijinksy), a Groupwinning
juvenile but a failure at stud.
Cedarberg’s tabulation features a
duplication of Nijinsky, who appears in the
pedigree of Helenus too, but it is Infrared
that has the interesting tabulation from a
theorist’s point of view.
Infrared’s sire Spectrum has Sunny Valley
as his third-dam and Sunny Valley’s sire
Val de Loir (Vieux Manoir) is a direct
descendant of Carpet Slipper (Phalaris),
the sixth dam of Infrared. Carpet Slipper
is a half-sister to Dalmary, the dam of
Rough Shod (Gold Bridge), the fourth-dam
of Cedarberg’s great-grandsire Fairy King.
NEWS
MESSARA WINS INAUGURAL NSW THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS HEROIC AWARD
John Messara AM has been awarded the NSW Breeders’ inaugural
Heroic Award. The award recognises “an exceptional contribution
to the NSW and Australian Thoroughbred Breeding Industries in
leadership, innovation, achievement and excellence”.
The award’s namesake – Heroic (Valais) – was, fittingly, bred at
Arrowfield Stud in Jerrys Plains, was the top priced yearling at
the 1923 Inglis Sydney Yearling Sale, was champion two-yearold
of Australia and was champion Australian sire for seven
successive seasons.
President of NSW Thoroughbred Breeders – Trevor Lobb –
presented the trophy to John Messara prior to the commencement
of the morning’s sale.
“It’s been a lot of fun the whole way through,” said Messara. “We
haven’t finished yet!”
John Messara’s contributions to the industry over the past 30
years include:
• Great leadership during the Equine Influenza crisis in
2007 which threatened the very existence of the industry.
John worked tirelessly in dealing with State and Federal
governments to permit the limited movements of mares
during the stud season and negotiating compensation
payments for many industry participants.
• Strong support as a key member of the Thoroughbred
Breeders of the Hunter Valley in the ongoing campaign to
limit the expansion of coal mining and secure the future of
our industry and other agricultural enterprises in the area.
• Services as past President of Thoroughbred Breeders
Australia Ltd. And of Aushorse Ltd. John Messara was
also a founding member of the Commercial Thoroughbred
Breeders Association, predecessor of Aushorse – the
marketing arm of the industry. He was instrumental in
bringing together Aushorse and Thoroughbred Breeders
Australia for the unity and benefit of the industry and has
done much to promote the Australian Thoroughbred both
internationally and nationally.
• Through Arrowfield as a major sponsor of racing in NSW
and Victoria and as a member of the Australian Pattern
Committee.
• Work with the late Colin Hayes in preparing a taxation
submission on behalf of breeders for the Hawke government.
This led to significant tax concessions for the industry which
laid the foundation for greater investment in bloodstock in
Australia and the development and improvement of quality
of our thoroughbreds.
• Innovations in breeding. Messara was among the first
studmasters to shuttle stallions from the northern
hemisphere, a process that brought the great Danehill to
this country. Arrowfield was the first farm to reverse shuttle
Australian stallions to Europe, Japan and the USA. Another
bold initiative by Messara was to send a number of quality
mares to Japan for Southern Hemisphere season matings
with the great stallion Sunday Silence. More Joyous’ Group
1 winning dam – Sunday Joy – was just one dividend from
this far sighted venture.
• Negotiating breeding ventures in Australia with such leading
figures as the late Robert Sangster, Sheikh Mohammed bin
Rashid Al Maktoum’s Gainsborough Stud, Katsumi Yoshida
of Japan’s renowned Shadai Farm and most recently
HH The Aga Khan. This has resulted in a number of high
quality mares coming to Australia and greater international
recognition of Australian bloodlines.
