Arrowfield’s Chairman John Messara said, “We are delighted
have every opportunity to develop from a Champion racehorse into a
Animal Kingdom’s two-length victory in last Saturday’s Dubai World
Cup was the first USA-trained success in the race since it has been held
on the synthetic Tapeta surface at Meydan. The versatile five-year-old
has won on dirt, turf and a variety of synthetic tracks include Polytrack
and Tapeta. The win took his career earnings to US$8.3million.
The Graham Motion trained Animal Kingdom won the 2011
Kentucky Derby and and was crowned USA Champion Three-Year-Old
that year, and as a Four-Year-Old, at his first start for almost nine months,
Animal Kingdom finished an unlucky second to USA Horse of the Year
From his 11 career starts to date, Animal Kingdom has won five
Cassidy Hoping Demi Can
Bounce Back
The Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) (registered as
Storm Queen Stakes), the first of five consecutive
Group One races on Saturday’s Rosehill card, sees a
quality field of 15 fillies going to post. Early betting
markets are dominated by the Group One winners in the field -
Norzita (Thorn Park), Dear Demi (Dehere) and Habibi (Ekraar).
The Clarry Conners-trained Dear Demi (Dehere) was
disappointing on her last start in the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1,
1500m), finishing 11th to Appearance (Commands), who will
take on More Joyous (More Than Ready) in the Queen Of The Turf
Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) tomorrow on the same card.
Dear Demi will again been ridden by Jim Cassidy, who believes
the VRC Oaks (Gr 1, 2500m) winner can bounce back from her
last start and return to the form that saw her win the Surround
Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Warwick Farm on 9 March.
“On face value she was a bit disappointing last start,” Cassidy
said. “But she got back and out of her comfort zone and it was
hard for horses to make up ground.”
Her Coolmore Classic run was only the second time in her
18-start career that she had finished further back than fourth,
the other being the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) as a
juvenile, when she finished seventh.
Dear Demi, who was second in the Schweppervescence (Gr 3,
1400m) (registed as T L Baillieu Handicap) at this meeting last
year, will be back against her own age group tomorrow, having
taken on the older mares on her last start and Cassidy firmly
believes she will return to her best form.
“I do, back to three-year-old fillies grade and up to the
2000m,” he said. “She pulled up really well, nothing was amiss
with her apart from the fact she just got out of her comfort zone.”
Dear Demi, whose 18 starts to date have yielded five victories
and seven placings. She is the current equal favourite for the
Australian Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 20 April and a
win tomorrow would almost certainly elevate her to outright pick.
Her major rival in the Vinery include the Bart Cummingstrained
Norzita (Thorn Park), who finished on strongly for a close
third in the Coolmore Classic but will need to pass her first test
beyond 1600m.
Norzita, who won last year’s Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Randwick, is the current $2.80 favourite with the TAB, ahead of
Dear Demi at $4.60 and Habibi (Ekraar), at $5 who was a laststart
winner of the New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m).
That trio are the clear top picks with the recent Alexandra
Stakes (Listed, 1600m) winner You’re So Good (Savabeel) next
best at $13.
Spring Carnival Generates $620million For Victoria
Premier and Minister for Racing Denis Napthine yesterday joined
Racing Victoria to release the 2012 Spring Racing Carnival
Economic Impact Study which shows the racing carnival
generated more than $620million for the Victorian economy.
“The Spring Racing Carnival is a flagship event on both the Australian
and international racing calendar. But most importantly, it is a growing
source of employment and economic benefit to Victoria,” Dr Napthine
said.
“The overall gross economic benefit to Victoria was $620.1million,
which is an increase of 7.2% on the 2011 Spring Racing Carnival.
“The 2012 carnival attracted more than 706,000 attendances to
race meetings throughout the state and injected hundreds of millions of
dollars into Victoria’s tourism, hospitality and retail industries.
“The carnival again proved to be a massive drawcard for interstate
and overseas visitors with more than 67,000 individuals visiting Victoria
for the purpose of attending the Spring Racing Carnival and accounting
for 165,000 race day attendances across the state.
“The 67,000 people who visited Victoria in 2012 for the purpose of
attending the Spring Carnival is a 19.7% increase on the previous year.
“These visitors spent more than $128million while in Victoria,
including more than $35million on accommodation and more than
$13million in the retail sector.
“This is a fantastic result that highlights the importance of cooperation
between the Victorian Coalition Government and the racing
industry in targeting high-value overseas racing patrons through our
trade missions to China, India and the Middle East,” Dr Napthine said.
Highlights of the economic impact study include:
· $53.39million spent on fashion;
· $35.53million spent on accommodation;
· $53.35million spent on food, beverages and raceday dining;
· $10.80million spent on transport; and
· $22.37million spent on retail.
“Racegoers boosted Victoria’s retail sector by splashing out on an
incredible number of fashion items to wear to carnival events. This
friday 5 april 2013 ANZ
included 66,000 pairs of shoes, 80,000 hats and fascinators and
32,000 ties,” Dr Napthine said.
The 2012 Spring Racing Carnival covered 115 race meetings across
Melbourne and country Victoria running from 22 September to 25
November 2012.
Country racing also enjoyed a successful Spring Racing Carnival with
almost 185,000 attendances over 100 racedays across the state, an
increase of 5.3% from 2011.
Racing Victoria Chief Executive Officer Bernard Saundry said the
Spring Racing Carnival was unrivalled in Australia.
“The carnival is an iconic and integral component of the state’s
sporting, social and cultural landscape and a great asset to the state of
Victoria,” Saundry said.
“Our international audience continues to climb thanks to record
levels of international participation in 2012, further promoting the state
of Victoria and the profile of Victorian racing on the world stage.”
Major Upgrades at geelong
racecoUrse coMplete
Premier and Minister for Racing Denis Napthine announced
yesterday the completion of a $700,000 major upgrade to the
Geelong racecourse, including new horse stalls, safety improvements,
hospitality facilities and a new television broadcasting studio.
“The Victorian Government is committed to the future of racing
in Geelong and is proud to announce the completion of these works
that will ensure Geelong Racecourse continues to be a premier racing
venue in Victoria,” Dr Napthine said.
“The completion of the race day horse stalls project will greatly
enhance safety for horses, trainers and strappers while also allowing
greater viewing access for owners and the public.
“The previous horse stalls were more than 30 years old and the
project included the demolition of 45 existing stalls, the installation of
40 new stalls, refurbishment of remaining stalls, plus the construction
of vet and swabbing boxes and asphalting of all horse access areas.
The horse wash bays were also upgraded.
“To improve the quality of raceday broadcasts from Geelong
racecourse, the Victorian Coalition Government also contributed funding
towards the construction of a permanent
broadcasting studio at the track.
“In addition to these upgrades there was also a major refurbishment
of the Dual Choice Room, improvements to outdoor hospitality areas and
a series of minor occupational health and safety works,” Dr Napthine
said.
Geelong Racing Club Chief Executive Paul Carroll said the
improvements to the stalls had previously been outlined in the club’s
master plan and the new broadcast facilities would allow ThoroughVision
(TVN) to better promote racing in country Victoria.
“We particularly welcome the conclusion of this rejuvenation on
the occasion of the 100th running of a race meeting on the Pro-Ride
synthetic track at Geelong today,” Carroll said.
Geelong Racecourse GEELONG RACING CLUB
Racing Victoria Chief Executive Officer Bernard Saundry described
the rejuvenation of raceday stalls at Geelong Racecourse as an important
safety upgrade which would also enhance the raceday experience for
patrons.
“This project has rejuvenated the raceday stalls precinct. It greatly
enhances the safety of facilities as well as offering a much improved
capacity for racegoers and owners to view and interact with the horses,”
Saundry said.
Country Racing Victoria Chief Executive Officer Scott Whiteman said
the installation of permanent television studios at key country racing
venues including Geelong was highly beneficial.
“About 45 race meetings are held annually at Geelong racecourse,
with a large percentage during the winter months. The development
of the Geelong broadcast facility will greatly enhance coverage
of meetings conducted at this premier country racing venue,”
Whiteman said.
Dr Napthine said racing in the Barwon region generated
more than $105million for the local economy annually and many
hundreds of jobs.
“The Coalition Government is committed to fostering this regional
growth through its $79.5million Victorian Racing Industry Fund,” Dr
Napthine said.
The Victorian Coalition Government provided half of the funding for
the various racecourse upgrades with Racing Victoria, Country Racing
Victoria and the Geelong Racing Club providing the balance of funds. The
project has been completed on time and under the anticipated budget.
racing to ensUre MiniMUM standards
at racing and training Facilities
Racing NSW and the NSW Trainers Association (NSWTA) have
announced that the two bodies will work more closely together to
improve racing and training facilities at racecourses throughout New
South Wales.
This includes the appointment of racehorse trainers located at
Metropolitan and Provincial racecourses as well as within Country
regions, to act as liaison officers. The liaison officers will be existing
NSWTA representatives or members appointed jointly by Racing NSW
and the NSWTA.
Racing NSW Chief Executive, Peter V’landys, sees the initiative
“The trainers are at the coalface and the creation of local liaison
officers will enable trainers to communicate issues with Racing NSW
in a coordinated manner and ensure they are acted upon as soon as
possible,” V’landys said.
“Racing NSW will seek guidance from the nominated trainers in
identifying issues affecting training and racing,” V’landys added.
NSWTA Chief Executive, Steve McMahon, welcomed the
arrangement: “It is important that minimum standards of our training
tracks are upheld for the sake of everyone involved in racing,” McMahon
said. “It’s vital that problems are communicated quickly so they can be
fixed ASAP.”
NSW Trainers Association is the only trainers’ representative
group recognised by Racing NSW and NSW Legislation representing
NSW trainers.
In order to avoid any confusion as to whom one should speak to
when there is a training problem at each respective track, a liaison officer
has been for each track. The aim is to make it easier and more efficient
for trainers, race clubs and Racing NSW to receive the information and
act on it.
If problems arise the matter shall be taken to the liaison officer
whereby the officer will then take the issue up with the race club, before
bringing the matter to the NSW Trainers Association.
9 IN PERSON wITh
1. Congratulations on your new position within
the Australian Turf Club, could you tell us a little
more about your new role?
“Thank you. I’m excited about the new role as it is a wonderful
opportunity for Australian Racing to present a ‘Grand Final’ event at
Royal Randwick in April each year. We are getting organised to try and
get the event up and running for 2014, and worst case we’ll be ready
for 2015.
“We have one of the great race courses of the world with the ‘new’
Royal Randwick about to be unveiled and we need to ensure there is a
racing event befitting of the Venue that captures world interest.”
2. Details of a new race series, to be launched in
2014, were announced with your appointed, when
is it likely that more details will be released on this?
“We are still at a sensitive stage of
negotiations with some key partners so
until they are finalised it is difficult to say
much more at the moment. I’m hopeful
that by mid-year we’ll have in place the
majority of elements that enable us to
make a call on whether we can launch in
2014 or are better to hold off until 2015.”
3. Do you think after the
recent success of international
runners in Melbourne Cup more
international runners will be
attracted to the spring carnival
and likely to target other races?
“I suspect the model of more tried
staying types being purchased to race in
Australia will continue. That’s good for the Sydney Autumn Carnival
as well given they’ll stay in Australia to race on, providing we can
put on a viable and valuable series of races for these horses to
target.
I’m not convinced the ‘hit and run’ visits of European horses
will continue to grow.”
4. The Golden Slipper is fast approaching, who do
you think will win and why?
“Overreach just looks to be too fast for anything else at the
moment. I’d also
like to see horses
owned by big
syndicates do
well as we need
the syndication
model to flourish
and winning races
like the Slipper
would be a great
fillip for these
businesses. Charlie Boy is a Triple Crown syndicated horse,
Diamond Oasis is with Champion Thoroughbreds, Whittington is a
Star Thoroughbreds and I’m All The Talk is an Elite Thoroughbreds
horse. I’d like to see them all get a run and perform well.”
5. If you bring any international
horse to Australia for a spring
campaign who would it be and
why?
“I’ll be more worried about getting
horses to come to Sydney for Autumn. I’d
love to see the Dubai World Cup winner
Animal Kingdom come to Australia to race
in Sydney and the Japanese sprinter Lord
Kanaloa would also be very welcome.
Realistically if we can get three or four
runners from outside of Australia and New
Zealand in the first couple of years I’d be
satisfied with that.”
6. What is your favourite
racecourse and why?
“Randwick. It has many happy memories for me of great days
shared with friends. Being a Victorian I didn’t think I’d find a venue
I liked more than Flemington but when the weather is kind there’s
no better place to be at the races than on the lawns at Randwick.”
7. If you were put on a desert island for two weeks,
what would be the three things you would take
with you?
“My three boys, Harry, Angus and Louis. I’d also like to take my
wife if there was room!”
11 COVER VENDOR STORy PROFILE
1. How many yearlings do you have in
your draft and how does this compare
to previous years?
“We have nine yearlings at this year’s sale. We had seven last
year and I would like to have around 12 at future Easter
yearling sales.”
2. In your draft who are your
stand out filly and colt?
“The top filly is the daughter of Sebring and Tahni Girl, she
is very very nice! Tahni Girl was an absolute speed machine and
Sebring was no slouch. Her dam was fifth in the Slipper to the
likes of Dance Hero, Charge Forward, Alinghi and Fastnet Rock
and Sebring won that race, so bring on the Slipper with filly.
Of the colts I am unable to spilt the ones out of Makybe Diva and
Gold Anthem. They are both top colts.”
3. What are your market
expectations for this sale
and as a vendor have
you been pleased with the
outcome at the 2013 sales
so far this year?
“I think the sale will be solid as we had
a reasonable Magic Millions Gold Coast
Premier Sale and we are very excited about
the Easter sale, I cannot wait!”
4.What do you think are
the essential qualities for an
Easter yearling to have?
“I think yearlings that are mature,
correct, precocious and with an athletic
5. Who is the most successful
did they achieve on
the racetrack?
“It would have to be Bint Marscay,
“I think it will be a colt and hopefully one by Sebring,
which leave us with Criterion!”
7. What is your favourite restaurant in
“Hurricanes at Bondi definitely have the best pork ribs anywhere in
the world. I would also do the Bronte to Bondi coast walk, which is
