Another impressive win 

in a restricted race at 

Bendigo yesterday has 

earned the Mike Moroneytrained 

Marwood (O’Reilly) the chance 

to step up to participating in spring 

carnival racing. 

The Moroney-trained three-year-old 

will be tested in the Caulfield Guineas 

Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m) on 21 September 

with a view to running in the Caulfield 

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) two weeks later. 

It was the gelding’s second win in 

two starts, both of which have come 

with relative ease for the well-bred son 

of New Zealand champion sire O’Reilly 

(Last Tycoon), who is out of the Group 

One winner Pernod (Centaine). 

Marwood raced away to win the 

0-64 Handicap (1400m) by four and 

half lengths lengths with jockey Nicholas 

Hall giving him an easy time in the 

closing stages. 

“His first start was a maiden on a 

heavy track, but I think this seals it and 

proves that he’s the real deal today,” 

Hall said in a post race interview. 

“He’s going to be definitely up there 

and I think he’s going to be competitive 

this spring for sure.” 

Yesterday’s victory followed his 

impressive debut win at Seymour on 18 

August which prompted ANZ Bloodstock 

News to feature him as our Maiden of 

the Week. 

Moroney’s stable foreman, Matt 

Hoysted, said the ease of those two 

wins clearly justified stepping Marwood 

abruptly up in grade. 

“Because he was so impressive, we’ll 

go three weeks now into the Guineas 

Prelude and give him his chance 

and see how he can step up there,” 

Hoysted said. 

Marwood was a $210,000 

purchase by Paul Moroney Bloodstock 

at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter 

Yearling Sale from the draft of 

Trelawney Stud.

He is a half brother to the dual Group Three winner Martini 

Red (Red Ransom) and their dam, Pernod (Centaine) won the 

2002 Invitation Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m), beating Bel Esprit (Royal 

Academy). This is also the family of the New Zealand Champion 

Three-Year-Old Filly Eastern Joy (Three Legs) and the Group One 

winners Piachay (Danasinga) and Russian Pearl (Soviet Star). 

Marwood is one of two Bendigo winners who are heading 

towards the Guineas with trainer David Hayes considering 

his recent recruit Surging Wave (Encosta De Lago) has 

claims following his good win in the Maiden Plate (1400m) 

at his first start for the stable. The three-year-old gelding 

had been unplaced in two starts in New Zealand prior to 

yesterday’s victory. 

Surging Wave was the first leg of a winning double for Hayes 

and stable jockey Chad Schofield, who backed up to score with 

Maraatib (Redoute’s Choice) in the following event. 

The four-year-old mare, who had finished second at eight 

of her previous 15 starts, including last year’s Wakeful Stakes 

(Gr 2, 2000m), won easily by five and a half half lengths. She 

was a $700,000 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase 

by Shadwell Australia from the draft of Highgrove Stud at the 

2011 sale.

Hawkes-trained three-year-old cruised

(1100m). “I don’t know whether we’ll 

see him in Australia for much longer, but 

he’s a very, very nice horse. Obviously 

he’s got a really good pedigree and he’s 

living up to that at this stage,” said 

jockey Dwayne Dunn. A $270,000 Inglis 

Australian Easter Yearling Sale purchase, 

the colt is out of the 2006 Sandown 

Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) runner-up Flame 

of Sydney (Encosta De Lago).

Randwick this morning. “I thought the 

trial was better for her than running in

said. “She’s very fit but she has been up 

a long time and I don’t want to give her 

one run too many...I want to make sure 

she is right for the Epsom.”

The highly regarded Lloyd Williams-raced 

Sea Moon (Beat Hollow) has pulled up 

sore after his disappointing Australian 

debut in the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 

1600m) at Flemington on Saturday. Sea 

Moon was always well back and finished 

twelfth, five lengths behind the winner 

Foreteller (Dansili). It was a bad day all 

round for the Williams / Robert Hickmott 

combination as another two of their other 

runners, also imports, Ranked (Montjeu) 

and Thought Worthy (Dynaformer) pulled 

up sore as well.

in November after being disqualified 

for placing a $10,000 bet on Miss 

Octopussy (Lonhro) at Moonee Valley in

New Zealand’s lengthy run of wet winter 

weather could see multiple Group One 

winner King Mufhasa (Pentire) head to 

Australia. His immediate options are the 

George Main Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at 

Randwick on 21 September or the Sir 

Rupert Clarke Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at 

Caulfield on Sunday 29 September. “It 

looks as if we will have to bring him to 

Australia...the tracks in New Zealand are 

too wet,” said trainer Bruce Wallace.”He 

had a trial at Avondale last week and 

although he wasn’t up against much, but 

he won by nine lengths. At some stage 

soon he will retire but not just yet.”

at Hanshin was won by Hakusan Moon 

(4 c Admire Moon - Ciliege by Sakura 

Bakushin O) who beat Lord Kanaloa 

(King Kamehameha) by a neck. Dream 

Valentino (Roses In May) was another 

three and a half lengths back in third. 

The win is the third stakes victory for 

Hakusan Moon who has won seven of 

his 17 career starts to date and over

EXCELLENTE WIN 

The Keisei Hai Autumn Handicap (Gr 

3, 1600m) at Nakayama was won 

by Excellente Cave (4 f Daiwa Major - 

Indiana Curve by A P Indy) who scored 

by a length and a quarter. Danon Shark 

(Deep Impact) was second and Gottfried 

(Lohengrin) was another two and a half 

lengths back in third. Excellente Cave, 

who was previously stakes placed, 

becomes the 11th stakes winner for 

her sire Daiwa Major (Sunday Silence).

Royal Empire (4 c Teofilo - Zeiting 

by Zieten) may still be aimed at the 

Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) after 

his second in the September Stakes 

(Gr 3, 1m4f) at Kempton on Saturday. 

The Godolphin-owned runner finished 

behind his stablemate Prince Bishop 

(Dubawi), beaten a head. “Royal Empire 

is a possible runner for Melbourne but it 

depends on the quarantine as there is a 

complication,” Godolphin racing manager 

Simon Crisford said. “The Australian 

quarantine can only accommodate the 

runners for the Cox Plate and Caulfield 

Cup at the moment. He might now run in 

the Cumberland Lodge at Ascot [October 

5] and hopefully it will be sorted out.” 

QuaRANTINE TO CommenCE 

As many as 12 international runners 

being aimed at the Melbourne Spring 

Carnival could be on the first flight, with 

those horses needing to enter quarantine 

on Thursday. Horses likely to be on this 

first flight include 2011 Melbourne Cup 

(Gr 1, 3200m) runner up Red Cadeaux 

(Cadeaux Genereux), Marco Botti’s 

Dandino (Dansili), Side Glance (Passing 

Glance) and Mull Of Killough (Mull Of 

Kintyre). Racing Victoria international 

consultant Leigh Jordan also said that he 

expected Simenon (Marju) and Trevieres 

(Gold Away) to be on this first flight. 

Also travelling with this first wave of 

European horses will be Danny O’Brien’s 

Shamexpress (O’Reilly) who ran in the 

King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at Royal 

Ascot and in the July Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at 

Newmarket in July.

decision and the RWITC have gone totally 

against their own rules by failing to 

uphold Martin’s appeal in full,” said Paul

to BHA [British Horseracing Authority] 

press office on Monday requesting the 

ban is not reciprocated and for stay of 

penalty pending hearing.’

stakes winner. Solitary Ranger defeated 

Whyruawesome (Whywhywhy) by five and 

a half lengths with Cee ‘N O (Silver Train) 

another six and three quarter lengths 

back in third. It was Solitary Ranger’s, 

who is from the first crop of US Ranger, 

first victory after being placed second

Hong Kong Season Gets Off To A Dream Start 

It was another day of records at Sha Tin racecourse 

yesterday, as Hong Kong’s racing season got off to 

“more than a dream start” beneath golden sunshine. 

Hong Kong SAR Acting Chief Executive Carrie Lam 

Cheng Yuet-ngor struck the ceremonial gong to mark the 

start of the campaign, and for the second year in a row, 

record-breaking turnover was matched by an all-time high 

attendance for the day. 

“We have enjoyed another great start to a new season 

- more than a dream start,” said Mr Winfried Engelbrecht- 

Bresges, the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Chief Executive 

Officer. “Moreover, we have had the highest turnover at a 

season opening in 20 years at HK$1.032 billion, which is 

11% more than a year ago. 

“Last year we had the highest opening day attendance 

in 20 years; this year we have surpassed that with 66,257 

race fans generating a fantastic atmosphere at our two 

racecourses. 

“To put that into perspective, today’s crowd figure is 

up more than four percent on last year and represents the 

first time that our opening day crowd at Sha Tin has broken 

the 60,000 mark. Compared with 2010, when we started 

the Racecourse Master Plan, we have seen an opening day 

attendance increase of 37%.” 

Mr Engelbrecht-Bresges expressed cautious optimism 

about the season ahead and thanked race fans for their 

support, which he said was the “impetus for continuous 

racecourse investment.” The CEO also applauded the 

new innovations that have been implemented for this 

season under the Club’s ongoing Racecourse Master Plan 

and revealed that the latest round of developments were 

the subject of “very positive feedback from members and 

race fans.” 

The day’s sport saw Zac Purton team up with Cerise 

Cherry (Goldkeeper) to take the feature race, the Class 1 

HKSAR Chief Executive’s Cup. The Australian was notching 

his second successive win in the 1200 metre contest having 

arrived late and fast atop Supreme Win (Fastnet Rock) 

to deny the wilting Cerise Cherry by a short-head in last 

season’s race. 

Having been beaten 12 months ago, trainer Derek 

Cruz turned to Purton this time and last season’s jockeys’ 

premiership runner-up made no mistake. After stalking in 

sixth position, Purton angled out the eight-year-old at the 

top of the stretch and ran home strongly to score by three 

quarters of a length in a time of 1:08.48s. The Tony-Cruz-

trained Best Eleven (Charge Forward) was second, a length 

and a quarter ahead of race favourite, Destined For Glory 

(Azamour), from the John Moore stable. 

“We were unlucky last season, we just hit the front too 

early, so I told Zac to just take a sit on him and give him 

a chance. He gave a very good kick in the straight,” said 

Derek Cruz of last season’s Longines Hong Kong Sprint (Gr 

1, 1200m) runner-up. 

“He ran very well last year and I’ll get him freshened up 

again for those big races – he can run the same race again. 

I just need to keep him running fresh and keep away from 

running him in too many races at a time because he can 

taper off.” 

New boy Karis Teetan got his Hong Kong career off to the 

best possible start. The Mauritian-born light-weight looked 

strong in the finish as he drove the David Ferraris-trained 

Amazing Always (Perfectly Ready) to a half-length victory in 

the first race of the season, the Class 5 Tim Mei Handicap. 

Tony Cruz was also on fire as the trainer registered a 

first-race treble with Roman Legend (Holy Roman Emperor), 

Majestic Anthem (Dubawi) and Beauty Sparkle (Snippetson) 

– the last two were partnered by Matthew Chadwick. Zac 

Purton also made it a double in the last race on Fair 

Trade (Danewin). 

Last season’s champion apprentice Dicky Lui notched 

a brace too, while Champion jockey Douglas Whyte kicked 

off with a win on the well-supported Clement Spirit (Flying 

Spur). Not to be left out, Dennis Yip ensured all of last year’s 

champions made a good start as the champion trainer took 

the ninth race with Jun Gong (Spinning World).

Postage-Stamp Weight Sees Tiger Master Home

The ever-consistent Australian-bred Tiger Master 

(Bradbury’s Luck) gained the full benefit of a polished 

ride from talented apprentice jockey A’Isisuhairi Kasim 

to record a brilliant all-the-way win on Sunday, writes 

Michael Lee. 

Already a three-time winner when ridden to his favourite 

pattern of being on the pace, the Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s 

Choice) four-year-old always looked likely the moment A’Isisuhairi 

took him to a hollow lead before gradually increasing the tempo 

from the 400 metres. 

Chinese Culture (Face Value), who snapped at his heels from 

the start, tried to peg him back, but in vain as he had to settle for 

second best, half a length away, just nosing out The Rude Warrior 

(Kempinsky) for second. The winning time was 1:35.45 for the 

1600 metres on the Short Course of the S$75,000 Class 3 race 

on turf. 

Trainer Sonny Yeoh said he wished he had a barn full of 

Tiger Masters as he seldom let him and the owners, the Master 

Stable, down. 

“This horse is very genuine when he leads. With his small 

weight [51kgs after A’Isisuhairi’s two-kilo claim], he just kept 

finding, but he won by only half a length,” said Yeoh. 

“Even though he had some company in the lead, Harry rode 

him very well and only went for him in the straight. 

“Credit must go to Harry for another great ride. Time and time 

again, he has proven how good a judge of pace he is and today, 

he’s summed up that race to perfection.” 

With that 52nd Singapore-based win, the Malaysian but 

Kranji-based rider is well clear in the Singapore apprentice 

jockey’s premiership (against second-placed Tengku Rehaizat on 

22 wins), but if his three recent wins in Kuala Lumpur are factored 

in, he currently stands only one win shy of Benny Woodworth’s 

absolute Malayan Racing Association record of 56 wins ridden by 

an apprentice, established in 1995. 

“I am more focused on my wins in Singapore, to be honest, 

but yeah, I’m aware I’m very close to Benny’s record if the three 

KL wins are added,” said A’Isisuhairi. 

“It’d be nice if I could equal it today and even break it as I still 

have three more rides.”

Casino King, A’Isisuhairi was at another prolific day in the 

office, but was surprisingly at his first winning treble as he 

has three four-timers to his name, and many doubles, but 

no threes. 

A’Isisuhairi said Tiger Master (S$20) looked vulnerable when 

the swoopers poked their nose at the 250m, but his featherweight 

load saved the day. 

“The instructions were to go forward, and with only 51kg on 

his back, he did it easily,” said A’Isisuhairi. 

“He was always travelling comfortably within himself. The 

other horse [Chinese Culture] was about to go past us, but my 

horse dug in deep and left him behind.” 

Tiger Master has now recorded four wins and three placings 

from 12 starts for stakes earnings close to the S$170,000 mark 

for the Master Stable. He is out of the unplaced Cherokee Run 

(Runaway Groom) mare Atali with his third dam being the Group 

winner Zaizafon (The Minstrel) who produced nine winners including 

the Group winning sires Zafonic (Gone West) and Zamindar (Gone 

West). Tiger Master was a $31,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast 

Yearling Sale purchase by Teoh Kheng Chye from the draft of 

Glenlogan Park, where his sire Bradbury’s Luck stands.
