Miracles Of Life SPORTPIX
Ridden by 29-year-old apprentice
Lauren Stojakovic, Miracles Of Life
(Not A Single Doubt) maintained
her unbeaten record when she
won yesterday’s Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr
1, 1200m).
The daughter of Arrowfield-based
stallion Not A Single Doubt (Redoute’s
Choice) remains is now four from four and
provided her sire with his first Group One
winner, scoring by a length and a half from
Fast ‘N’ Rocking (Fastnet Rock) with Godiva
Rock (Stratum) a close third.
Trainer Daniel Clarken and the filly’s
owners allowed Stojakovic to keep the ride
on Miracles Of Life after riding her to victory
in her previous three starts. Stojakovic,
who had been out of racing for three years
through injury returned to scale with her
face stained with tears.
“Our little girl, our little girl,” cried her
father Nenad as she reached the winning
post clear of the field.
“She’s number one, number one. This
is the greatest thing, she deserves it so
much.”
Adelaide-based Stojakovic arrived at
the high-point of her career after breaking
her pelvis in four places in a trackwork
accident, having broken a leg before that
and also having surgery on both knees.
Starting the $3.20 favourite, Miracles
Of Life started from barrier one and settled
in behind the speed. She was moved off the
fence inside Montsegur (New Approach) at
the 500m and went onto score a dominant
victory.
“Everything just worked out, it went
better than I thought it could,” Stojakovic
said. Continued on page 2
ALL TOO HARD DOMINATES IN
FUTURITY
All Too Hard (Casino Prince) scored his third Group One victory
yesterday when taking the Futurity Stakes (1400m), once again
coming off the better against the older horses.
All Too Hard SPORTPIX
The Hawkes-trained half brother to Champion Black Caviar (Bel
Esprit) was the only three-year-old in yesterday’s ten horse field and
scored a dominant three and a quarter length victory over Glass
Harmonium (Verglas) with last year’s winner King Mufhasa (Pentire)
third. Last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner, Green
Moon (Montjeu), finished fourth.
Starting the $1.90 favourite, All Too Hard opened up over the
final 200 metres and put three and a quarter lengths on the Group
One winner Glass Harmonium, with the son of Casino Prince (Flying
Spur) now likely to back up in next weeks Australian Guineas (Gr 1,
1600m).
“When he was coming to the corner with a lapful of horse you
knew they were in trouble,” co-trainer Wayne Hawkes said.
In winning All Too Hard joined the Champion Manikato (Mahini)
as the only horse to win the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) in
the spring and then claim the Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) - Futurity
double in the autumn in 1979.
“He’s not the elite yet but he’s certainly heading towards it,
that’s for sure and certain,” Hawkes added.
“We’re pretty level-headed and let the horse do the talking. But
his form is pretty good. You can’t do much more than he’s doing at
the moment.”
Jumping from barrier four, All Too Hard was positioned in
midfield one off the fence by jockey Dwayne Dunn and the race was
put the race to bed in the straight when he let down.
“He’s doing everything beautifully ... doing everything right,”
Dunn said.
“It’s a credit to his demeanor.”
MRS ONASSIS TAKES OAKLEIGH
PLATE
The Gerald Ryan-trained and Gerry Harvey-owned Mrs Onassis
(General Nediym) won yesterday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m),
the same race that Ryan won with Snitzel (Redoute’s Choice) in
2006.
Miss Onassis SPORTPIX
The favourite and unbeaten Perth sprinter Barakey (Key Business)
was withdrawn on veterinary advice after diving forward in the
barriers and trying to get down under them.
It was the first run since Mrs Onassis finished tenth in the
Mumm Stakes (Listed, 1100m) (registered as Begonia Belle
Stakes) at Flemington in November and Ryan had doubt about
the fitness of the five-year-old mare, who had won a barrier trial at
Rosehill earlier this month over 900m.
“Gerry said `don’t give up so easy’,” Ryan said after Mrs
Onassis’ win yesterday.
“‘You set her for the race in November. Work her in the morning
and see what you think’. She worked that well on Tuesday morning
so we thought we’d give it a go.”
Starting at $16, Mrs Onassis, who was ridden by Kerrin McEvoy,
Facile Tigre (Catbird) with Spirit Of Boom (Sequalo) a further three
quarters of a length back for third.
“She’s just getting better as she gets older,” Ryan said.
“After she won here in the spring, Gerry said to aim at the
Oakleigh Plate.”
Mrs Onassis will now be aimed at The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m),
which will be run at Randwick on 20 April.
The Paul Messara-trained globetrotting Group One winner
Ortensia (Testa Rossa) finished 11th, beaten over four lengths,
whilst the victory gave Gerald Ryan his first Group One success
since Melito (Redoute’s Choice) won the Winter Stakes (1400m) in
2010.
“I said the next Group One I won I’d give up smoking,” Ryan said
after yesterday’s victory.
Mrs Onassis (5 m General Nediym – Miss Jakeo by Unbridled’s
Song) has now won eight of her 18 starts and $512,530 in prize
money. She is out of the winning Unbridled’s Song (Unbridled) mare
Miss Jakeo who has produced five runners with her other Group
winners being Miss Judgement (Strategic) and Fifth Avenue Lady
(Encosta De Lago). Mrs Onassis’ second dam is the dual Group
One winner Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon) whose wins included the Blue
Diamond Stakes. She produced ten winners including the stakes
winners Red Arrow (Red Ransom) and Able Choice (Dehere).
COOL WIN IN AUTUMN CLASSIC
Super Cool (Fasntet Rock) took yesterday’s Autumn Classic (Gr 2,
1800m) at Caulfield, scoring by a length over the Victoria Derby (Gr
1, 2500m) winner Fiveandahalfstar (Hotel Grand), who started the
odds-on favourite for yesterday’s race.
It was the second Group Two victory for the Mark Kavanaghtrained
Super Cool, who son the Moonee Valley Vase (Gr 2, 2040m)
last Autumn before he finished second to Fiveandahalfstar in the
Derby. Subiaso (Testa Rossa) finished third in the six-horse field, a
further five and a half lengths back.
“As it turned out it was perfect,” winning jockey Michael Rodd
said.
“We were confident he would be too brilliant for Fiveandahalfstar
over this distance and that’s what it came down to. We backed our
judgment and thought the horse would be too good.”
Kavanagh is using this preparation with Super Cool to build a
foundation for the spring.
A tilt at the Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) looks high on the agenda,
having won over that track and distance last spring.
“He’s unbeaten over 2040 metres at Moonee Valley,” Kavanagh
said.
Super Cool will have only two more runs this campaign but
there are “plenty of options” including the Australian Cup (Gr 1,
2000m) and the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 1, 2040m).
“I wouldn’t rule anything out,” Kavanagh said.
“The horse will tell us where we’re going. This preparation is
Fiveandahalfstar’s trainer Anthony Cummings said his horse
was still on target for the Australian Cup.
“He presented better and pulled up better than his first-up run,”
Cummings said.
“He’s going in the right direction.”
A $150,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase
FURY CAUSES AN UPSET IN THE
Alma’s Furty (Refuse To Bend) caused an upset when he took
yesterday’s Apollo Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Warwick Farm. The
Ridden by Blake Shinn, who had no preconceived ideas, but
“He travelled like the winner a long way out,” he said.
“I kept him out of trouble on the fresh ground and he did the
The race was without one of the favourites when Shoot Out
Analysis: Star three-year-old All Too Hard scored his third Group
One victory in impressive style. After being first to leave the barrier
he eased to settle sixth one off the rails travelling well. Dwayne
Dunn moved him up three wide nearing the home turn and the colt
put in a quick run at the 200m, then drawing well clear for an easy
three and quarter lengths win. Glass Harmonium began well today
and soon led. The seven-year-old set a good pace and fought back
well when challenged holding on quite well for second, finding
the top class three-year-old far too good. King Mufhasa raced
outside the leader (Glass Harmonium) to the 200m and battled
on gamely for third. Last year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m)
winner Green Moon raced handy to the pace in third place on the
rails. He switched across heels at the 300m and kept fighting on,
a bit one paced, for a sound first-up fourth. Maluckyday was last
in the ten-horse field to the 300m point, before finishing nicely in
the centre for a late-closing fifth, in a good first-up performance.
Stablemate Niwot was near last to the turn, he then kept making
ground to sixth in promising first-up effort from the 2012 Sydney
Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner.
Analysis: A perfect ride from apprentice Lauren Stojakovic on
the little filly Miracles Of Life who began well from her inside
barrier and settled sixth on the rails. Stojakovic skilfully eased
out nearing the turn and Miracles Of Life straightened up in third
place, three wide, travelling well. The filly drew to lead at the
200m and went to the post strongly to win by a length and half
in an impressive performance. The maiden Fast ‘N’ Rocking was
near last on the rails and got a lovely run through on turning
for home, getting through to fifth at the 200m, then fighting on
well for a very good second. The lightly raced filly Godiva Rock
had a good trip from barrier two being about eighth on the rails
to the 600m. She got a split at the turn, moving to fourth at
the 200m, then battling on well for third, putting up a promising
effort. Gregers worked up to race outside the leader (Metstasio)
after starting from barrier ten, only tiring after passing the 200m,
to finish a sound fourth. Shamus Award was about seventh in
the centre before fanning wide at the turn and battling on quite
nicely to finish fifth. Montsegur showed pace being a handy
fourth to the turn before finishing sixth beaten four and a quarter
lengths. Dissident started from the outside barrier (14) and was
trapped midfield and very wide before finishing on late for seventh
beaten just over five lengths, putting up a good effort. Metastasio
showed good pace to lead from a wide barrier (11) only tiring from
the 200m for eighth. While the second favourite Guelph raced
midfield and wide after starting from a difficult barrier (12), failing
to run on in the straight to finish ninth.
Also ran: Ocean Park (NZ) & Final Touch (NZ), last.
Analysis: Despite an excusable form line at his last two starts,
Nashville confirmed the talent he has always shown to claim a
Group One win at his thirteenth start. 14-1 in betting, with the
inclusion of Cox Plate winner Ocean Park (Thorn Park) in the five
horse field, Nashville bided his time sitting two lengths off the
second last horse as Veyron set up a genuine gallop. He circled to
pounce on the leaders at the 150m and kept going boldly to win
with some authority. Veyron fought hard for second after leading
at a very good speed, a good effort.. Better than Ever, who raced
ton the outside of the leader also battled hard in the straight for
a good third. Ocean Park had every possible change in the run
racing in fourth one off with a trail. He was one of the first horses
to come under pressure in the straight and battled on at one pace
for fourth. Only an even first up effort. Final Touch raced behind
the leader, she had clear running on the rails and tired late on for
a disappointing last.
Analysis: The race was delayed when the first two favourites, the
unbeaten West Australian trained Barakey and the unbeaten threeyear-old
filly Shamal Wind both played-up in the barrier stalls. The
filly was passed fit to start but the vet ordered the withdrawal of
Barakey. The Gerald Ryan-trained mare Mrs Onassis began smartly
and raced outside the leader Adebisi before she drew clear at the
200m going on strongly to win by a length at the post. Facile Tigre
was about eighth in the centre to the turn before easing across
heels at the 200m and running on nicely for a good second. Spirit
Of Boom was ninth on the rails until into the straight and came with
a late run to grab third. Undeniably was trapped three wide without
cover outside the leading pair and challenged at the 200m before
battling on for a sound fourth. Adebisi led to the 300m and lasted
to dead-head for fifth, beaten two lengths, with Unanimously who
raced midfield with cover to the turn. Shamal Wind was fifth on
the rails to the turn but tired from the 200m to finish second last,
perhaps being affected by her antics in the barrier. The three-time
Group One winner Ortensia was second last to the turn and made
ground without threatening for sound first-up four and a quarter
lengths eleventh with her 58kg top weight. While last year’s winner
Woorim was last all the way.
Analysis: Noted front-runner Meliora set the pace as expected. Luke
Nolen rated her nicely, increasing the tempo after passing the 1000m
establishing a five lengths lead before the home turn. She was never
threatened in the straight to win by three and half lengths and record
her first stakes win. Members Joy was a distant third from the
800m, before seriously setting out after the leader on straightening.
She ran on quite well without ever looking likely to wear down the
leader. Red Fez was a little slowly away and was a distant fourth at
the 800m before making up ground, without threatening for third, a
head behind the second-placed horse at the line. Hamam chased
the leader to the 200m, tiring from that point to finish fourth putting
up an honest performance after her first run in stakes company.
Analysis: Super Cool was ridden patiently by Michael Rodd racing
in fifth spot in the six-horse field before improving three wide from
the 600m point. He got to second at the 300m and continued to
finish well, despite the sprint-home tactics, to grab a one length
win at the post. It was an impressive effort. Fiveandhalfstar
began quickly and immediately led. Glen Boss set a moderate
pace (first 1200m 1:15.19) before increasing the tempo nearing
the home turn and pinching a break on straightening. He looked
the winner in the straight, being overtaken just before the post.
Subiaso travelled in third place one off the rails with cover. He
came up three wide at the turn, got to third at the 200m and kept
battling on to take the minor place, just over five lengths behind
the second-placed horse. The South Australian three-year-old Bit
Of A Schiller raced outside the leader (Fiveandhalfstar) to the
Margins: 0.4 lens, 0.1 lens. Time: 1:50.97 (last 600m 34.21).
Betting: $13, $4, $10.
Also ran: Mawingo (GER), Tanby (AUS), Prairie Star (FR), Eclair
Surprise (AUS) & Invest (AUS), last.
Analysis: Dwayne Dunn eased Foreteller to last from his outside
barrier in the eight-horse field. He remained at the tail of the field
to the 600m but got a great rails run at the home turn, suddenly
improving to be just behind the leader (Budrigeuz) on straightening.
He then got inside that horse at the 200m and finished gamely
for a good long neck win at the post. West Australian stayer Mr
Moet was second last in the small field to the 600m and moved
up wide nearing the home turn. He was forced very wide on
straightening and kept running on well to grab a good second at
the post being unsuited by the sprint home tactics of the race.
Brett Prebble set a moderate pace on the leader Budrigeuz (first
1200m 1:16.76) before pinching a nice break on straightening. He
was only overtaken in the latter stages holding on for a close third.
The favourite Mawingo had a good trip in third place on the rails,
travelling nicely. He switched out three wide rounding the home turn
and challenged at the 200m but then just kept battling on to finish
a close fourth after seeming to have every chance. Tanby raced
in sixth place one off the rails before switching between runners
at the turn. He kept running on nicely to finish a close fifth, being
unsuited by the moderate early pace.
Glencadam Gold (IRE), Monton (AUS) & Doctor Doom (AUS), last.
Analysis: The $19 chance to Alma’s Fury won here in gloomy
conditions with the race being run in heavy rain. He raced in about
seventh place, without cover possibly in better going, before
joining the leading pair of Laser Hawk and Tougher Than Ever
nearing the home turn. He kept fighting on strongly, still in the
centre of the track, to win by a long neck at the post. The threeyear-old
Tougher Than Ever raced outside the leader, Laser Hawk,
before taking the lead at the 200m. He looked the winner at that
stage, and was only caught nearing the post. Danleigh was last
in the 13-horse field to the 600m. He stuck to the rails and got a
great run and almost hit the lead mid-stretch before fighting on for
a close third. Outsider Willy Jimmy surprised running on for fourth
with the stayer Kelinni, who was handy on the rails, holding on for
fifth. Gatewood raced wide and put in a nice first-up run to finish
sixth beaten just over seven lengths. While Laser Hawk (seventh),
Albert The Fat (eighth) and Glencadam Gold (ninth) all appeared
to fail due to the very heavy conditions.
Analysis: The top billing fillies, Bounding and Recite displayed
their abilities in a gripping finish. A stride slow to begin, Recite
was able to recover and trail from barrier one, while Bounding
began well to sit on the quarters of the leader A’Larose. First to
go for home on straightening, Bounding quickened as expected
to establish an advantage but soon had Recite issue a challenge
to her outside. Locked in battle for 200 metres, Recite looked to
have her measure at the 100m and she went on bravely to hold
a narrow lead. There was a five length margin to Role Model, and
Iffley Road, who ran on for third and fourth respectively.
Also ran: Stratford (AUS), Jest Crewsin’ (AUS), Hypurr (AUS), Ideal
Analysis: The noted wet-tracker Skytrain was well supported
to start $3.80 favourite. He raced on the extreme outside in a
compact eight-horse field. He moved up, still in the middle of the
track and probably in better ground, to challenge at the 200m
before drawing clear to win by just under two lengths at the post.
The classy mare Streama also raced wide, travelling one horse
closer to the rails, inside the winner to the 200m mark. She then
fought on nicely for a good first-up second. Outsider Onthelookout
was handy to the pace, racing outside the leader, Stratford, to the
turn. He took a narrow lead at the 200m then held on for third
beaten four and a quarter lengths. Stratford led until half way
down the straight before tiring for fourth, beaten five lengths. The
well-backed second favourite Hood ($4.80) was last most of the
way, appearing to resent the heavy conditions.
Analysis: Star Of Giselle had a good run behind the leader Family
Crest who was setting a slow pace (first 800m 50.41). She eased
around heels on straightening but took a while to wind up in the
sprint home, putting in a strong late bid to win by a short head
at the post. Family Crest set a moderate pace, before taking a
clear lead at the 200m, only to be run down nearing the post,
seeming to have every chance. Hi Belle was last in the 11-horse
field to the 600m. She went to the extreme outside at the home
turn and came with a fast late run to figure in a three-way photo
finish. It was an exceptional effort to make so much ground in
the sprint home with the leaders coming home in 34.62. Rose
Pattern raced outside the leader (Family Crest) to the 200m and
held on for fourth, beaten a length at the post. Storm Burst came
from midfield on the rails, getting inside runs to finish fifth while
Spirit Song was near last on the rails to the 200m before finished
quickly, being blocked in the latter stages for one and a quarter
length sixth.
Analysis: Consistent mare She’s Clean settled fifth three wide
before moving up wide out from the 600m. She was hindered when
the leader, California Storm, ducked out on straightening and then
went to the centre of the track, continuing to run on well, to grab a
good last-stride win. Appearance was fourth one out and one back
and improved three wide at the turn. She too was hindered at the
bend but she recovered to take the lead at the 200m only to be
caught nearing the post. Colorado Claire was seventh one off the
rails and under pressure from the 600m until she picked-up about
the 200m, then running on to take third. Nocturnelle was eased to
last in the eight-horse field after starting from the outside barrier.
She was ridden hard to improve at the 600m and got between
runners at the 200m, running on fairly well late for fourth.
Analysis: The locally trained Al Strada had won on debut by five
lengths after leading throughout and two starts later he employed
similar tactics with a result to match. With the gate speed to lead
easily from barrier one, Al Strada got through his work boldly before
flattening out with a powerful gallop at the 200 metres and the three
length margin he established was too much for the favourite Touche,
who failed, to reel him in. Astute And Agile worked early to race
second in the open and laying down a challenge near the home turn
he fought on solidly to finish third, five lengths from the winner.
Analysis: The smart three-year-old Better Than Ready scored an
impressive win over his older more experienced opposition in this
Listed event. He began well and eased to get a good run third
on the rails travelling nicely. He angled for an inside run at the
300m, getting through shortly afterwards, and the colt dashed
clear before being eased down nearing the post for a three
lengths win - his fifth in eight starts. Craiglea Falcon was back
past midfield and followed the winner through on the rails from
the 300m, battling on to take second. The Sixites led early then
raced behind the mid-race leader, Joint Chiefs, before coming
outside that horse at the turn and holding on for third, beaten
three and three quarter lengths.
Analysis: Agulhas began quickly and eased to trail the leader,
Holder Sunset, travelling kindly. She came up three wide at the
turn, drew to the lead at the 200m but then had to fight hard
sunday 24 february 2013 ANZ
to score a short half head win at the post. The Peter Moodytrained
colt Office Bearer was second last in the 12-horse field
to the 600m. He got a split at the turn and improved to third at
the 200m before fighting on gamely to fail by the narrowest of
margins. Last Day, winner of his only two starts, was back about
tenth, three wide with cover, to the 600m. He fanned wide at the
turn, took a little while to wind up, but then finished strongly for
an eye catching third.
Also ran: El Soldado (NZ), Grand Admiral (AUS), Annie Higgins
(NZ), Ransomed (NZ), Back In Black (NZ), Capone (NZ) & Revolt
(NZ), last.
Analysis: Continuing a rich vein of form, Guess What worked hard
to lead at the post with a lap to run. He travelled within himself
at a genuine tempo, lengthened to a two length advantage at the
250 metres and kept finding to hold his rivals at bay. Giving the
winner six kilograms, Alegrio settled in a perfect position, fourth
on the outer, and ran home strongly in centre track for second.
From three back on the rail, Better Together picked a path close
to the rail for third. El Soldado fought well off the trail for fourth,
ahead of Grand Admiral, who raced outside the leader, with the
favourite Annie Higgins coming from back in the field for fifth.
runner up Snip The Dancer. Dwayne Dunn aboard Grand Emperor
railed on the fence and secured a run between runners just prior
riding, taking the lead at the 50m to score by half a head. Snip
The Dancer ran well in defeat, he ran along in front and fought
Analysis: Zin Zan Eddie revelled in the rain-affected conditions
streaking away in the straight to score by a widening three
lengths. In the run Zin Zan Eddie raced in fourth on the back of
the leaders, he corned on the outside of the field and responded
well to Jay Ford’s urgings quickly picking up the leaders and racing
right away to a good victory.
Analysis: Good Job Bro could not have been more impressive
winner here. He was used up from his wide barrier to race on
the quarters of the leader Marseille Roulette before quickly
taking over in the straight and racing away to an effortless victory.
Good Job Bro was a good second behind the smart Guelph at his
previous start, he has made good improvement and enjoyed the
wet conditions. He is a colt to follow. Calming Influence had every
chance in the run racing just behind the leaders, she battled on
gamely in the straight and was no match for the winner but drew
well clear of the third horse.
Analysis: The Bjorn Baker trained Havana Rey scored a strong two
and a quarter length victory, his seventh from 19 starts. In the run
he settled down behind the tearaway leaders in fourth. Taken to the
extreme outside in the straight he powered through the very heavy
ground proving far the better in the run to the line. A good strong
win by a tough gelding.
