MUFHASA DOES IT AGAIN
eighth gr 1 win in Captain Cook stakes
Mufhasa ANZ
Mufhasa dominated his rivals
in yesterday’s Westbury
Stud-sponsored Captain Cook
Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at
Trentham to record his eighth Group 1 victory
and give rise to the prospect of searching
for more, writes Jeff Dore.
“I said to David (Archer) after his win
in the Toorak Handicap that we’ll try and
get him to ten [Group 1 wins],” said trainer
Stephen McKee. “That’s the mission for
him now and for a seven-year-old he’s just
racing great.
“He’s better on the leader’s flank, so
it really worked out for us,” said McKee,
after Mufhasa led, trailed, took a position
outside the leader and proved above his
opposition in the straight.
Despite causing some anguish for the
camp after he broke through the barriers
prior to the start, Mufhasa was quickly given
veterinary clearance. The incident was not
the end of his woes as rider Samantha
Spratt is likely to face some time on the
sideline, following a judicial hearing on 7
December at Ellerslie racecourse, after she
admitted to a charge of careless riding when
allowing Mufhasa to move off the trail at the
1300 metres when insufficiently clear of
Hold It Harvey (King Cugat) on her outside.
Second placed Vonusti (Ustinov) got to
one and a quarter lengths from Mufhasa
at the line, Dating (O’Reilly) came from the
trail for third, while Hold It Harvey finished
just ahead of Booming (Don Eduardo) for
the minor prize. Continued on page 2
Continued from page 1
Having notched 17 wins and NZ$2,734,767 in prize money,
Mufhasa (7 g Pentire – Sheila Cheval, by Mi Preferido) is a
magnificent return on investment after being purchased by David
Archer for $50,000 at the 2006 New Zealand Bloodstock Select
Yearling Sale, from the draft of Rich Hill Stud.
Archer shares the ownership with his partner, Diane Wright,
along with son and daughter, Simon and Natalie Archer.
Saturday’s win was his fifth under weight-for-age conditions
and having won the Telegraph Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) on two
occasions at Trentham, brought his course record to three wins
from four starts.
McKee and connections will now decide whether or not the return
for another crack at the Telegraph on 21 January at Trentham,
prior to a start in the Waikato Draught Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) on 11
February at Te Rapa.
“We’ve certainly nominated him [for the Telegraph], but we’ll give
him a couple of weeks freshen-up now. He’ll definitely run in the
Waikato Draught, but he’ll have to run somewhere before that, so
we’ll certainly look at the Telegraph,” said McKee.
During a current campaign of five starts Mufhasa has included
the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at Hastings, to go with his
wins in the Toorak, and now the Captain Cook, in a stint McKee
suggests is aided by having his feet in good condition.
“He’s always had little niggles with mainly his front feet over
the years, but they’ve all grown out and are more symmetrical and
in proportion this year, so he’s been pain free, sounder, and he’s
racing accordingly.”
PLAyING GOD DOUBLES UP
Playing God (Blackfriars) bounced back from a disappointing
Melbourne Spring campaign by going back-to-back in the Kingston
Town Classic (Gr 1, 1800m) at Ascot with a big performance.
Steven Parnham gave Playing God every chance, racing just
behind the pace and poised to challenge into the straight. Playing
God loomed large into the straight and then powered away,
eventually defeating the fast-finishing Ranger (Testa Rossa) by one
length with three-year-old King Saul (Flying Pegasus) in third.
Trainer Neville Parnham explained afterwards that he had
changed the horses training formula to include beach and bush
work. “It seems everyone had written him off bar me.” an emotional
Parnham said, adding that Playing God would now be spelled and
be aimed at another campaign in Melbourne during the Autumn.
“We probably expected too much from in the Railway,” Parnham
said. “Top-weights don’t have a good record in the race and he had
the sprint taken out of his legs in the Group 1 races in Melbourne.
“I’ve had to change a lot of training routine around with him
and taken him out to my farm and the beach every day. It’s been a
terrific result because most people had written him off and I was
the only one who didn’t. I just asked Steven to ride him in the same
position as last year - one-one - and it worked.”
DURHAM TOWN FLIES HOME IN
CONCORDE
Although new to the ranks of top echelon racing, Durham Town (4
g Falkirk – Durham Walk, by Marju) measured up with aplomb to
justify his favouritism in The Aussie Butcher-sponsored Concorde
Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) on Saturday at Ellerslie, writes Jeff Dore.
While plans to tuck in behind the pace went awry, talented young
rider Jason Collett got Durham Town home in 33.83 off the front
for the last 600 metres, in a sectional that made it difficult for
his rivals, and he stuck to his guns in the straight to win by half a
length in 1:09.51.
Trained by Donna & Dean Logan at Ruakaka, the bullish 16.3hh,
566kg, gelding further enhanced his course-distance record to five
wins from six starts in a career that has only seen him in action
seven times.
“I know he had a light weight on his back [52.5kg], but he’s a
very, very talented horse,” said Donna Logan.
“We were hoping he might be a star on the rise and our judgement
could be right. He has shown so much with so little racing.”
Finishing second, Upsala (Oratorio), trained by Ken Rae, made it
a quinella for Ruakaka trainers, while third placed Rough Odds is
owned by the sponsor, Keith & Lyn Oddy.
Logan purchased Durham Town as a yearling for $43,000 at
the 2009 New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Sale, from the draft of
Nerobella Lodge. She also bought his half-sister by Lucky Unicorn
(Redoute’s Choice) the following year.
“He was an absolute standout and really caught my eye,” said
Logan. “I like to have a crack at young stallions, like Falkirk (Tale
of the Cat), and I liked the fact there was some Sir Tristram (Sir
Ivor) in the second dam [Majestic Walk]. He ticked all the boxes
on vetting, so really he was the type of horse I like to buy. I’d done
some research on the pedigree and he’s from Vela’s family [Peter &
Philip Vela own Pencarrow Stud and New Zealand Bloodstock].”
Soon after signing for the horse, former top trainer Jim Gibbs
(MNZM) asked if she had an owner. “No one owns him, Jim, you
know what I’m like,” said Logan. “I buy them first and worry about
that later, but I have to like them enough to want to buy them and
realise I might end up owning them myself.”
Logan remained in the horse, while Gibbs put a syndicate together
with Paul Collins, David Wale and ex All Black coach John Hart.
as dressage riders and prepare one or two horses a year for the
NZB National Yearling Sales Series each January at Karaka. They
purchased the mare Durham Walk for $7,000 from the Pencarrow
draft at the 2006 NZB Broodmare Sale, based on her pedigree,
and are hoping that the cross with Zabeel (Sir Tristram) mares
that has been so prominent recently through the deeds of Atlantic
Jewel (Fastnet Rock), Planet Rock (Fastnet Rock), Southern Speed
(Southern Image) and He’s Remarkable (Pentire) will draw people
to their sole entry in the 2012 NZB Select Yearling Sale on 1
February: Lot 581 (Ch. F. Sakhee’s Secret – Astrology, by Zabeel).
Coincidentally, Astrology was trained by Jim Gibbs to win six races.
Durham Town will now be set for the Railway Handicap (Gr 1,
1200m) on 1 January at Ellerslie.
MONTON MASTERPIECE
Monton enjoyed a textbook ride from apprentice Sam Clipperton to
glide to victory in the $100,000 Festival Stakes (Listed, 1500m) at
Rosehill. Cliiperton is apprenticed to Monton’s trainer Ron Quinton
and was a late substitute when Chris O’Brien, who was originally
engaged to ride, had to pull out through illness. Quinton nominated
Clipperton to ride if there were no senior jockeys available, and the
17 year-old gave Monton the run of the race.
Settled in fifth place along the inside, Clipperton eased Monton
off the fence into the straight and then split horses to make his
challenge, running on to reach the lead 200m out. Lightinthenite
(Galileo) chased hard all the way in the straight but he was always
being held by Monton, who eventually scored by half a length. Front
running Viva Las (Elvstroem) stayed on gamely for third.
“This was the best he ever paraded and he did sweat up, he
remained calm; cool, calm and collected and he raced accordingly,”
Quinton said, adding that Monton is likely to run next in the
$175,000 Villiers Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Warwick Farm on 17
December.
Monton (5 g Catbird – Dynamic Flyer, by Marauding) sold for
$80,000 as a yearling at the 2008 Easter Sale and has now won
five of his 19 starts and earned $356,760.
FERMENT BUBBLES OVER
Patinack Farm-owned colt Ferment (2 c Husson – Catalyst, by
Tabasco Cat) overcame some difficulties in running to score an
impressive debut win at Caulfield. Ferment gave Jamie Mott a
difficult ride, throwing his head around when restrained early and
then dropping the bridle into the straight but he showed plenty of
natural ability to finish too well for his rivals in the $70,000 Laura
Butcher Memorial Plate (1100m).
In winning Ferment sent his sire back to the head of the
Australian and New Zealand First-Season Sires’ list, by winners and
earnings.
Ferment has tested the patience of those around him but there
is no doubting his ability. Melbourne stable manger Glen Thompson
said Ferment is “a professional when he’s running, he just needs to
behave a bit better at other times.”
“He’s got a few tricks up his sleeve and has done a good job to
get here and get through the race. He’s got an awful lot of ability
and if he can put it all together then I believe he has the makings of
a smart colt,” Thompson said, before adding, “although that status
could be up for review,” referring to the possibility of Ferment being
gelded.
Jamie Mott wasted to take the ride Ferment at 56kg but the
effort was worth it and the jockey said he feels the colt could
measure up to better races. “He is definitely up there with the best
two-year-olds,” Mott said. “He acts up a fair bit but if they can get
on top of that he should be up to the good races.”
Mott has ridden 27 city winners this season from limited
opportunities because of his weight. “It wasn’t easy getting down
to 56kg but I didn’t kill myself to do it,” Mott, who is based at
Flemington where he is tied to the Russell Cameron stable
and helps out with the Patinack team when necessary, as Glen
Thompson says, “He has been helping us out quite a bit and we try
and pay him back with as many rides as we can.”
Patinack Farm paid $60,000 for Ferment as a weanling at the
Magic Millions National Sale and the two-year-old is inbred 5 x 5 to
the mare Missy Baba.
INFINITE POTENTIAL
It may have only been a mid-season three-year-old handicap
however the style in which Infinite Energy (Flying Spur) won the
East $70,000 Malvern Community Bank Handicap (1400m) has
his trainer Peter Moody thinking of better races ahead.
ADVERTISING alice@anzbloodstocknews.com
Sunday 4 December 2011 ANZ
Playing God ANZ
Making just his second start and resuming from a spell, Infinite
Energy raced midfield behind a strong pace and then stayed
near the inside into the straight. Driven out by apprentice Daniel
Stackhouse, Infinite Energy ran on strongly to score by threequarters
of a length over race favourite Stratigraphy (Stratum).
Moody explained that immaturity was the reason for the bigframed
chestnut son of Flying Spur being lightly-raced. “He has just
always been a backward horse, we have always had a good opinion
of him. I thought that once Luke Nolen rode him in a gallop and
suggested his wife take a share that he might go all right.
“He has just taken a while to furnish and he still looks a bit
immature besides some of these. I think there is a good future
for him,” Moody said. “He has got the framework to grow into a
magnificent horse.
“He is the type of horse who could have a couple over summer
and be put away and maybe go to Brisbane for a winter campaign.
His timing is not going to be right for the autumn but he has a good
future and he is certainly a stakes quality horse.”
DAMON IN DEAUVILLE
Well, its good to be back!
ADVERTISING alice@anzbloodstocknews.com
Talk about drama - sadly we lost one of our tour
members before the French trip had even started.
Peter Watson from Mill Park Stud in Adelaide who was
in top form eating and drinking everything in sight has been left back in
hospital in Newmarket following a nasty bout of food poisoning. I knew
that rich lamb shank and all that gravy was dodgy. Adrian Hancock, his
travelling companion, has been very concerned but decided to continue
on without him. Surely Tattersalls do not need to go to such extreme
measures to stop us Australian’s spending up in Deauville?
We arrived into a rather wet and windy Deauville on Thursday
afternoon after a rather turbulent flight on the plane that Arqana kindly
put on for me and my closest friends (and 75 others who I have never
met before). There were a few moments when we thought we might
not make it to Normandy, however, no life jackets or emergency chutes
were required and we all arrived in Deauville (minus poor Peter)!
Based on the fact that the sale is somewhat of a marathon, we
started off rather steadily on Thursday. A quiet dinner at Santa Lucia.
Why we would choose on our first night in France to go to an Italian
restaurant seems illogical, however, the food is fantastic. Poor Adrian
Hancock, still worried about Watson, decided to drown his sorrows with
three bottles of Chablis and then got all gala (something that is usual
reserved for me) & ordered a truffle pizza at 75 euros, about $100
Aussie !! can only be described as a organismic eating experience.
Peter Ford, as you know a simple country man thought it was all a
bit much so Hancock finished off his half eaten piece of pizza.
After the slow steady sensible start we hit Le Drakkar where we
bumped into several Aussies, Duncan Grimley, Scott Springett, French
regular Gary Mudgeway amongst them. Duncan was in his usual fine
form & speaking a strange version of French/Swahili by about 2 am at
which time he told us the name of the unknown soldier!! Well so much
for a sensible start. I left Hancock to find his own way home, which he
couldn’t & grabbed a cab for a 100 metre ride that cost him €25! So
much for a sensible start.
The sun decided to come out on Friday and so we were able
to inspect the foals, fillies and mares in rather good conditions for
December. For those of you worried about attending the sale due
to weather, James Price would be happy to speak to any concerned
parties to reinforce the fact that the Inglis sale in Melbourne in August
is usually far colder than it is here now.
In their newly refurbished sales ring, which includes an uber-groovy
& stylish restaurant, Arqana hosted their pre sale cocktail party. A new
addition to the function this year was a cocktail bar - what more could
you want than a Pina Colada. Gary Mudgeway was never far from the
attractive bar tenders who served him a good number of Coladas which
came complete with a straw and banana leaf!
This year the touring party has grown to include Bruce Neil from
Cressfield Stud & his son Brodie who resides in London. Bruce has
It’s good to be back
Myself, Adrian Hancock, Tara Routledge & Jon Haseler
shown a particular liking to the french reds from Bordeaux & if there
was an olympic event would surely be a gold medallist ! The Party
was terrific & we bumped into loads of familiar faces including Sam
Sangster, Stuart Boman, Hubie de Burgh, & our honorary Aussie Angus
Gold.
After the cocktail party it was off to Chez Herve which has become
my favourite Deauville eatery and so I decided to take a table there
whee i discovered that all my french lessons have been a complete
waste of money, I ordered a yummy sounding terrine de pieds de
cochon thinking it was light healthy asparagus tart & ended up looking
at a pigs trotter ! YUCK ! Chez Herve was pumping with the horse set,
Coolmore, Aga Khan, even James Price from Inglis was hosting a table
of internationals.
Another quiet round of cleansing ales at the Brok before bed.
The sale has started & I decided to go hard go early, something I
usually do in the bars !
I purchased lot 26 for 175 000 euros a stunning type by champion
sire Pivotal, she is a half sister to Gr 1 My Kingdom Of fife, from the
great Highclere pedigree, she was purchased for Victorian breeder
Michael Niall who was on the phone.
A few lots later Glenn Burrows from boutique nursery Willow Park
Stud called & over a glass of red secured lot 30 a winning Street Cry
half sister to 4 stakes winners & from a stakes winner. Anthony Mithen
& his wife Selena have popped up here for their first visit & bought 2
so far, lot 37 a Stakes winner for €37,000 & lot 79, a Stakes-placed
High Chaparral mare for a mere €15,000. I bought, what I considered
a bargain.
Lot 75, A Kingmambo descendent of Grand Luxe for a Queensland
client for €32,000. Not to be out done, Hancock Quality Bloodstock
President, Adrian Hancock of ‘quality is remembered long after price
is forgotten’ fame, secured a gorgeous daughter of Pivotal, a direct
descendent of the great Miesque for a steal, but has remembered very
tight lipped about his client. I have my annual Australian dinner table
booked tonight at Restaurant 21, which I am sure you are all familiar
with by now, so I will let you know how that goes tomorrow.
Analysis: Mufhasa flew the gate to lead before steadying to trail
and popped off to position outside the leader, Bragato, at the
1200 metres. He jogged to the lead while still firmly on the bridle
at the 300 metres and never appeared in danger of defeat. After
almost having rider Noel Harris out of the saddle when awkwardly
away, Vonusti recovered to race three back on the inner. He took
a while to clear traffic in the straight and let down well for second.
Dating received a saloon rails run in the straight after trailing
the leader and kept up a strong gallop for third. Following a wide
run in the open near the pace, Hold It Harvey stuck to his task
admirably for fourth.
Analysis: A lovely ride from apprentice Sam Clipperton who
positioned Monton in sixth place along the inside, smothered
away to the home turn where he eased off heels to come between
horses, quickening up into the lead to strike the front 100m and
stay on strongly. Lightinthenite looked to have every chance.
Settled in midfield, he was pressing to challenge into the straight,
running on well all the way to the line. Viva Las ran a career best
off the back of a last start win at Gundagai. Driving through to
hold the lead she set a steady pace and was still in front turning
for home. She stayed on very gamely and was not beaten all that
far. Mentality ran his usual honest race. In second place to the
home turn, he chased all the way in the straight, one-pace through
the final 100m.
well back at halfway, smotherd away along the inside. She stayed
there into the straight and made up several lengths to be closing
Analysis: Wonderful Lass proved too strong for the odds-on
gradually run down Carry Me Bluey, getting up in a head bobbing
finish to score narrowly. Fillydelphia raced in fourth place to the
