Metal Bender (Danasinga) had tried to go with So You Think
turning in and, as game as he was, proved no match and it was
left to the winners stablemate Dariana (Redoute’s Choice), last
season’s Queensland Derby heroine, to run home strongly to take
second place, two and a quarter lengths away, and earn Caulfield
Cup favouritism at the same time. Metal Bender stayed on for
third just a short-head away.
So You Think completed the 1800m in 1.49.54 with the last
600m run in 34.32.
“Very satisfactory, it was a commanding victory, he was able to
take a sit, which is good for the future but I am just here to collect
the trophy,” Duncan Ramage, racing manager to part-owner Dato
Tan Chin Nam said afterwards. Asked if he was concerned at So
You Think’s excitable nature before the race, Ramage had a simple
explanation. “He is a very fit, well, healthy horse, Bart didn’t want
to go four weeks from the Dato Tan Chin Nam into the Yalumba,
he is spacing him so there is improvement there.
Ramage did not discount that a tilt at the Melbourne Cup was not
an option. “Let’s get the Cox Plate out of the way first, but I am not
going to stop Dato and Bart doing what they want to do.
Jockey Steven Arnold is clearly growing to believe that So You
Think could be the best horse he has ridden. “He was actually
pretty keen going to the stalls today and a little bit stirred up in the
gates, so he probably need the run in him. We were going to lob
one-one, then we got a bit of pressure from the outside so I had to
hold my spot and that stirred him up a few times, so he probably
raced a little bit keenly through the mid stages.
“He was nice along the side then he come up under me around
the corner and he was never going to get beat from the 400m.
“He is an awesome horse. He just does a lot to please you but I
think he needed that today just to knock the edge off him, he had
come on since his run and I think he will be better for it.”
Bred in partnership by Michael Moran, So You Think cost
$110,000 as a yearling from the Windsor Park Stud draft at New
Zealand Bloodstock’s Premier Yearling Sale. After yesterday his
record stands at five wins and two placings from eight starts and
earnings of $2,588,820.
WALL STREET BOUND FOR AUSTRALIA
Wall Street (Montjeu) earned himself another ticket to Australia
with a strong win in yesterday’s NZ$200,000 Windsor Park Plate
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Hastings. Always looking in control of the race,
Wall Street was poised to challenge when heads turned for home
and he had little trouble quickening into the lead and going clear
to win impressively.
The six-year-old gelded son of Montjeu (Ire) had three-quarters
of a length to spare over Fritzy Boy (Brilliance) at the end of the
1600m with the Oaks winner Keep The Peace (Keeper) a long-

neck away in third.
“He’s a special horse. A smart galloper and it’s a real honour to
be riding him,” winning jockey Michael Coleman said.
Winning trainer Jeff Lynds said later that a discussion with
connections would take place before he planned an Australian
trip. “I think we all know that he’s a good horse, it’s just a question
of implementing the technical parts of it to get him to Australia.”
“We’re halfway there, it a question now of sizing up which races
best suit him. But there is a lot of good form over there (Australia),
so we have to take that into account in seeing what is best suited
to the horse.”
The $250,000 Ormond Memorial (Gr 1) over 2040m at Hastings
on October 2 is the most obvious option for Wall Street, with the
W S Cox Plate at Moonee Valley the tempatation of an Australian
trip.
Wall Street has now won nine of his 16 starts and earned
$535,000.
RESPONSE DOMINATES RUPERT
CLARKE STAKES
Lightly-raced mare Response (Charge Forward) stepped up to
the highest level with a dominant win in the Sir Rupert Clarke
Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield. Jockey Craig Williams had no
hesitation in allowing Response to roll to the lead after 400m and
she was never headed, although the challenges came with some
intent in the straight.
ANZ
No Evidence Needed (Shamardal) closed gamely in the straight
to try and give race sponsors Patinack Farm another major victory
while Queensland visitor Woorim (Show A Heart) flashed home
late but Response had done enough and she lasted home by the
barest of margins, the first three home covered by less than half
a length at the end of 1400m.
Co-trainer Matthew Ellerton admitted afterwards he was somewhat
surprised when Williams took Response to the front. “I was
headless when he went to the front, but all credit to him he got
away with it,” Ellerton said.
“She is a super mare, lightly raced and I hope we can go on with
it. She was a late maturer and has come a long way in a short
time. Hopefully we can have an even more fruitful spring with her
from here on end.”
Ellerton hinted that the Myer Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Flemington
on Derby Day to be the next target for Response, who was racing
for just the eighth time yesterday.
Response races in the colours of Barry and Midge Griffiths,
who won this race in 1992 with Mannerism. Griffiths purchased
Response as a yearling for $50,000 at the 2008 Easter Yearling
Sale from the draft of Alanbridge Stud. A smiling Griffiths was
quick to acknowledge that he had some help. “Ian McPherson
(Inglis) was a big help, this is a big thrill. Mathew [Ellerton] and
Simon [Zahra] have done a marvellous job. They have always felt
she has had ability and here we are.”
Response is the second Group 1 winner for Arrowfield stallion
Charge Forward and after yesterday her record stands at three
wins from eight starts for earnings of $458,775.

Picture: MORE STRAWBERRIES. Sportpix.
MORE STRAWBERRIES IS BRAVE
Having taken several starts to win a race, now More Strawberries
(More Than Ready) can not stop winning. Yesterday she showed
plenty grit to land the $175,000 Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m)
at Rosehill, making virtually all the running to win the 1500 metre
contest for three-year-old fillies.
More Strawberries was being stoked along into the straight by
Jim Cassidy and she needed to be as Parables (Lonhro) was
looming large on her outside. As trainer Gai Waterhouse quipped
last week, the ‘bone and muscle’ tradition of Tulloch Lodge lives
on and More Strawberries found plenty to repel the challenge of
Parables and eventually score by a neck.
“I think you saw two outstanding fillies, this filly is very very good
and the further she goes the better she will go,” Waterhouse said.
“Glyn Schofield rode her the other day and Nash has said it all
along, she feels like an Oaks filly.
“It was a two horse race wasn’t it! She got the edge being able
to lead and I loved the way Jimmy stacked them up in the middle
stages and was going three quarter pace, well my three-quarter
pace anyway. People are going to see some wonderful racing, this
is just the beginning.”
Cassidy was riding his first major winner for Waterhouse for
several years and he was making the most of it, paying tribute
to trainer and owner, John Singleton. “She relaxed nice in front,
I didn’t hesitate going straight to the lead because as you know,
when you ride for Gai they are fit enough to do it at both ends,”
Cassidy said.
“I upped the tempo about two and a half (furlongs) from home and
she really knuckled down to her task. I was never worried.”
By More Than Ready (USA), More Strawberries is a half-sister to
Group 1 winner All American (Red Ransom) and is raced by her
breeder John Singleton.
Her record now stands at two wins and three places from seven
starts and has earned $576,450.
ANACHEEVA FULL OF PROMISE
Anacheeva (Anabaa) confirmed he is a colt with a big future with
his defeat of Toorak Toff (Show A Heart) in the Caulfield Guineas
Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m). Racing in midfield and behind the leading
group, Anacheeva peeled off heels into the straight and then ran
on strongly to reach the lead in the final strides over a gallant
Toorak Toff, who lost nothing in defeat having been forced to
race three wide for the last half of the race. Skilled (Commands)
showed a return to form with a strong finish for third placing.
“We gave him a month between runs to keep him fresh enough
for the 1400m, there didn’t seem to be a lot of speed in the race,
but thanks to my two mares winning the previous couple everyone
wanted to lead there,” winning trainer Peter Moody said.
“He is a nice colt, good quality about him and he has that bit of
brilliance about him and am really looking forward to the (Caulfield)
Guineas.
Anacheeva has plenty of upside according to jockey Luke Nolen.
“He’s quite raw, still hasn’t quite furnished, but he’s going to be a
nice horse in the Autumn.”
Anacheeva cost $110,000 as a Easter yearling and is by Anabaa
and a brother to AJC Derby winner Headturner. He has won three
of his five starts and earned $189,275.

DIVORCES TOO GOOD IN PRELUDE
Darley-homebred Divorces (Domesday) broke her Maiden in style
by winning the Thousand Guineas Prelude (Gr 3, 1400m). Despite
racing wide for most of the way, Divorces let down powerfully in the
straight to run to the lead inside the final 75 metres.
The official margin was a long neck to Sistine Angel (Testa Rossa)
was game along the inside and finished a long-neck behind in
second with a length and a quarter further back to Panipique
(Testa Rossa) in third place.
“She did a really good job, they sort of dawdled mid-race, she was
three deep with cover and still on the chewy a little bit, but Mark
never panicked and put her in the right spot at the right time and
finished off well,” Paul Snowden said.
“Dad has been really excited about her, her and Parables there is
not much between them, this feeling can probably stretch out to a
little bit further, but as I said, the racing will tell us where we are
going with her, but the Thousand Guineas looks ideal.”
Jockey Mark Zahra echoed Snowden’s thoughts. “I have done
most of her work since she has been down here and she has sort
of given me the feel of an Oaks filly, she had a superior turn of foot
today, that was really nice.”
“I was wide and had cover which was probably the best spot to
be because I had an uninterrupted run into it, and she put paid to
them at the 300m, it was a good win.”
DARLEY RETRIEVE GLOAMING
Darley enjoyed a two-state Group race winning double when
their colts finished 1,2 in the Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill. The
Northern Hemisphere-bred Retrieve (Rahy) came with a relentless
challenge in the straight to wear down stablemate Erewhon
(Commands) and win going away by two and a quarter lengths.
ADVERTISING. alice@anzbloodstocknews.com EDITORIAL. editor@anzbloodstocknews.com
ANZ
“He is a nice horse,” Peter Snowden began. “He has always
shown a lot in Melbourne and what he has done there I think
was just a pre-training run for here. He has staying potential and I
could not wait to get him here today to see if what he had shown
us was going to come to fruition.
“Coming to the corner he was smoking. Erewhon did a great job,
a super job. It was a good effort by both.
“He [Retrieve] will definitely go to the Spring Champion Stakes,”
he concluded.
Retrieve has now won three of his six starts and earned $200,963
DOMINANT DESCARADO
COVER STORY CONT.
Descarado (High Chaparral) showed he is an improving stayer
with a gritty win in the Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1900m) at Rosehill.
Ridden positively by Peter Robl, who took Descarado to the front
soon after the start of the 1900m contest and the gelded son of
High Chaparral broke his rivals hearts with a display of sustained
speed.
Clear into the straight, Descarado galloped all the way to the line
and gave nothing else a chance, eventually winning by a length
over a game Triple Honour (Honours List) with Purple (Commands)
running on determinedly in the straight for third.
“I get such a kick when I see a horse like this,” Waterhouse said.
“He’s taken a while to get right, I couldn’t get his coat right but
after last Saturday I said, ‘I think I’ve got you’ Then I galloped him
a strong mile in blinkers at the start of the week and he’s come
round.”
“Peter’s riding so well and he’ll [Descarado] improve with this win.”
Waterhouse said that Descarado will go next for the Herbert power
Analysis: So You Think was very impressive here, in truth, never
looking in danger of defeat. Racing keenly, So You Think raced
in third and fourth place, over-racing early before settling by the
600m. Cruising up behind the leaders, So You Think accelerated
smoothly to run to the front and then go clear to win under hands
closer order at halfway and was trying to tack onto the back of So
You Think, running on well in the straight to make up several lengths.
Metal Bender was his usual game self. Always prominent, he was
being niggled along into the straight but stayed on strongly. Zavite
is racing in form. Always prominent, he stayed near the inside and
was solid in the straight. Shocking ran well. Slightly worse than
midfield, he was pushed along to be in behind the leading group
turning for home and then found some traffic problems, winding
up late on once into clear room. Red Ruler raced in the first four
all the way, staying on one-pace in the straight.
A game win. No Evidence Needed was slightly worse than midfield
at halfway and in behind horses coming to the turn. She sprinted
hard once into the clear and was closing at the finish. Woorim
was another to be camped in behind the leaders at the home
turn. He peeled out wide and was rushing hard late to just fail.
Sister Madly raced in second place to the turn and then stayed
on one-paced in the straight. We’re Gonna Rock was in midfield
and a bit wide at halfway. He came out wider still in the straight
and made steady headway to the line. Doubtful Jack looked to
have every chance. Midfield and with cover, he tried to quicken
into the straight but really only plugged away. Rightfully Yours
was always in the first half of the field and came through between
horses in the straight to make a little ground. Gathering raced
prominently to halfway. He was being niggled along to get closer
into the straight and was not beaten all that far.
Analysis: In a race dominated by on pace runners Wall Street
proved far the better winning his ninth race from 16 starts and
his second Group 1. In the run Wall Street settled down on the
outside of the earlier leader Time Keeper. Into the straight Wall
Street quickly took control of the race running to the front. He let
down well and held off all challenges never looking in danger down
the running. He is clearly the best weight-for-age horse in New
Zealand and will prove competitive in Melbourne for the Spring
Carnival. Fritzy Boy had every chance in the run settling just
behind the pace, he battled on gamely in the straight for second
but never threatened the winner. Keep The Peace settled down
third on the fence behind the earlier leader Time Keeper, she took
inside runs on the turn and battled on well in the straight tiring
late allowing Fritzy Boy to take second. Illuminates was sound in
defeat finishing on well from well back, she continues to race in
good heart evading retirement at each start.
Analysis: Hot Danish looked a bit better than these and so it
front, never looking in any danger after quickening clear into the
straight. Trader settled in third place and was being driven along
into the straight, chasing hard all the way. Cardinal Virtue settled
in second place and was still there into the straight, sticking on
solidly in the straight. Fist Of Fury enjoyed a nice run, in behind
the leaders. Hinchinbrook was disappointing. Settled in behind
the leaders he came out to try and challenge in the straight but
found nothing. Returntosender and Marheta were in the first half
all the way and stayed on at one-pace in the straight.
Analysis: More Strawberries rolled to the lead after 400 metres
Analysis: A surprise win to Firebolt, who produced a big effort
to win, sitting three wide all the way. Still there into the straight,
Firebolt quickened into the lead and stayed on strongly to score
well. Centennial Park bungled the start and was then ridden along
to take a forward position. Smothered away on the inside, he
came out to challenge in the straight and chased hard all the way.
Sacred Choice was in the midfield pack and then forced wide into
the straight, running on well to be closing at the finish. Sainthood
was given a patient ride, towards the rear early and then coming
wide into the straight, making up several lengths. Neeson enjoyed
a lovely run to the home turn, fourth on the fence and with cover.
He was squeezed out when going for a run in the straight and had
to be checked, losing all momentum. Once Were Wild looked to
have every chance, midfield on the fence at halfway but unable to
quicken in the straight.
turning for home, Anacheeva peeled off heels into the straight
and let down strongly, running on well to get up close to home.
Toorak Toff had a tough run. Breaking well he was near the lead
and ended up three wide. Challenging into the straight he got to
the front and looked the winner until caught late on. Skilled was
a big run. Midfield but wide, he was wider still in the straight to
challenge, closing all the way. Intencion drove through to position
just behind the lead early on and then stayed on gamely in the
straight to be not beaten far. Rekindled Interest was good again.
Well back, near last at halfway, he came wide in the straight and
was winding up strongly late on. Hollowlea settled in fifth place
just behind the leaders. He stayed near the inside in the straight
and stayed on solidly. Kudakulari was allowed to drift back slightly
worse than midfield at halfway. He was another to be forced wide
and made steady headway from the 600m.
Analysis: Divorces was impressive after racing midfield to the
turn, easing off heels and then letting down powerfully to run to
the front inside the final 100m and score a strong win. Sistine
Angel was game. Driving through along the inside after the start,
she was tucked in behind the leaders turning for home and
then dived through along the rail to run on well. Panipique was
always handy, running through to the lead in the straight and then
sticking on solidly. Speed Of Dark was always handy and stayed
near the inside into the straight, staying on one paced. Yosei was
always well back and near last into the straight, weaving through
between horses and then finishing off strongly. Ringa Ringa Rosie
was always well back and near last tuning for home. She took a
little while to get balanced but was winding up strongly late on.
Shamrocker and Willow Creek both looked to have every chance
Analysis: A really determined win to Retrieve, who raced in third
place to the home turn, albeit some four lengths off the lead.
Into the straight and Retrieve kept coming, wearing down long
time leader Erewhon inside the final 150m and then going away.
Erewhon lead and was still clear into the straight. He stayed on
gamely all the way to the line. Praecido raced in midfield before
taking closer order into the straight, staying on without ever looking
like winning. Sasa looked to have every chance, settling in behind
Erewhon to the home turn but unable to quicken in the straight.
Sea Lord also looked to have every chance, racing midfield to the
Analysis: Rainbow Styling sprang something of an upset. Always
handy, he was camped behind the leaders into the straight and
then came through between horses to quicken into the lead, going
clear and then having enough in hand to hold the late flourishes
of Moudre and Valdemoro. Both came from midfield and were
being rousted along into the straight, winding up strongly and both
hitting the line hard. Apprehend was in the first four all the way,
running to the lead early in the straight and staying on well to
the line. Mr Charlie was worse than midfield along the inside
at halfway and he was still there turning for home, making solid
headway towards the inside in the straight.
three deep for most of the trip, she kept coming in the straight to
be closing all the way. Solchow raced prominently as usual and
then stayed on one-paced in the straight. Irish Lights was slightly
THE BEST NEW SIRE IN
AUSTRALIA FOR 2010 A U S T R A L I A
Decade-best season for NZ-breds
in Australian black type racing NZTM
Analysis: Mackadoo raced prominently and in a slowly-run race
was in the right place, quickening into the lead turning for home
and then running on well to score. Altius was near last at the
home turn, winding up strongly in the straight to be closing at the
finish. Echoes Of Heaven bled and will now serve a three-month
ban.
R2: New Litho Hcp, $70000, 1400m.
Margins: 0.8 lens, 1 len. Time: 1:21.73 (last 600m 35.25).
Analysis: Live In Sin quickly settled on the lead and she ran her
rival mares ragged. Clear into the straight from Select, Live In Sin
stayed on strongly, holding the determined challenge of Select.
Zantelagh came from last at the home turn.
it three wins from as many starts and she can go on to better
things.
