Fazzle 

Fazzle and second placed Casabella Lane (Volksraad) were clearly 

superior as they charged more than three-lengths clear of quality 

mares in a capacity sized field. 

Luckless when sixth in the corresponding race last year, Fazzle 

again had to overcome a couple of checks in running. But a race 

tempo that suited horses back in the field played to her advantage, 

along with Casabella Lane and third placed Appiel (Singspiel). 

Colgan was snaring his third win for the day. “I was laughing, 

watching them and thinking ‘go for it’,” said Colgan. They were 

going very fast up front and in the end I was glad I was back there 

doing no work. I was on the back of Banchee and she brought me 

into it. 

“Vinny (Colgan) rode her absolutely beautifully,” said Murdoch. 

“This is the race we set her for, as we thought this race suited her 

best of all the options this year – and we topped it off. 

At her previous start, Fazzle resumed from a spell with notable 

performance for seventh over 1200 metres at Ellerslie. 

“I actually thought she needed one more [run], but she’s a little 

bit like that and she’s always actually better on the way up,” said 

Murdoch. “She runs best on the fresh side, always does. When you 

think you’ve got her looking right, she’s over the top. She’s one of 

those horses that seems at her best a wee bit pretty. 

“This year she is a massive mare and looks more like a colt. 

She has just furnished so much since last season. She is the 

loveliest natured mare and you couldn’t get a nicer kind of mare.” 

Bred and owned by Faye Torrance, Fazzle (5 b m Johar – Eftee 

One, by Volksraad) recorded her sixth win and continues the trend 

of quality mares in her family. Her dam showed ability winning 

three times, while her grand-dam, Bashful Lady (Imperial Guard), 



impressed on numerous occasions and included two listed races in 

a career of eight wins – four over her pet distance of 1400 metres. 

Fazzle will be freshened to return to Ellerslie – the scene of her 

previous five wins – to contest the Railway Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) 

on 1 January. 

Both well favoured, Banchee (Oratorio) and Twilight Savings 

(Secret Savings) had their chance but could do no better than 

fourth and fifth respectively. 

COUNTIES CUP TO DAUGHTER 

OF POSTPONED 

Describing himself as a ‘broken down cow cocky’, Don Walker 

bred, owned and trained Postmans Daughter (Postponed) to win 

the DHL sponsored Counties Cup (Gr. 2, 2100m) on Saturday at 

Pukekohe. 

“I was a dairy farmer, but I’ve been retired for quite a while,” 

said Walker. “I went to the sales a few years ago and bought half a 

dozen horses for about three or four-hundred bucks each and they 

all turned out okay. As Mark Chitty (Stud master at Haunui Farm) 

said to me, ‘treat them like you treat your cows and you won’t go 

wrong.’ They’re out in the paddock and I look after them as much 

as I can.” 

The win ranked amongst the best for Walker. “I won at 

Flemington with Darth Vader and that was a thrill. That was a 

Stayers Final (2500m) over there, which was a buzz, but this is the 

biggest win I’ve had.” 

Always underrated, Postmans Daughter had taken the eye of 

fellow Pukekohe trainer Richard Collett, whose mare November

“The hardest to beat could be the other local mare, Postmans 

Daughter (Postponed),” Collett had said. “She drops in weight from 

weight-for-age last time. I’ve watched her working on the track and 

her progress has been excellent.” 

Local hoop Danielle Johnson continued the home track theme 

and gave Postmans Daughter a lovely run before dashing clear and 

defying the late challenges of Mr Tipsy (Montjeu) and November 

Rain, with Prairie Star (High Chaparral) and Go Danny (Diamond 

Dane) whistling home late for fourth and fifth respectively. 

“She always had ability but she never showed it early on,” said 

Walker, “and it wasn’t until we gave her short wind sprints that 

she’s turned the corner. The others out of the mare have been no 

good at all. I put it down to luck.” 

Her third dam, Star Belle (Summertime), was Head of the 1966- 

67 New Zealand Three-Year-Old Free Handicaps and won 18 races 

including a Great Northern Derby (Gr.1, 2400m). 

Success followed on for Johnson when she rode Undisclosed 

(Pins) to win the Counties Bowl (Listed, 1100m). 

GROUP 1 AIM FOR TALENTED FILLYDELPHIA 

Trainer Rob Heathcote declared next year’s Tattersall’s Tiara 

(Gr 1, 1400m) as the long-range goal for Fillydelphia (Bianconi) 

following her commanding victory in the Brisbane Handicap (Listed, 

1630m) at Doomben on Saturday. 

Ridden by Jim Byrne, Fillydelphia had 1 1/4 lengths to spare 

over Humma (Iglesia) to give Heathcote the quinella in the 1600m 



feature. 

Early leader Rockdale (Danroad) was a further three-quarters of 

a length away third. 

While Heathcote believes the talented mare will prove an ideal 

contender for the Tattersalls Tiara (1400m) next June, has some 

unfinished business with the four-year-old daughter of Bianconi 

during the summer. 

“Her goals this campaign are the Recognition Stakes and 

Bernborough Handicap next month,” Heathcote said. 

“She’s a quality mare and she showed that during the winter 

when she won the Rough Habit Plate. 

“This is a time honoured race and she put a few to the sword 

out there.” 

Fillydelphia (4 b m Bianconi – Edel Vanessa, by Encosta de Lago) 

has won eight of her twenty starts with prize money of $321,300. 

DAUGHTER OF MM WINNER SET TO 

EMULATE DAM 

No Looking Back (Redoute’s Choice) will be given the chance to 

emulate her mother in January’s $2 million Magic Millions Classic 

(RL, 1200m) after scoring an impressive debut win in the WF 100 

Club Returns 2012 Handicap (1000m) at Warwick Farm yesterday. 

A $500,000 yearling, No Looking Back is a Redoute’s Choice 

daughter out of 2006 Magic Millions winner Mirror Mirror (Dehere). 

Waterhouse said the filly was one of several youngsters in her 

care heading towards the $2 million event on 14 January. 

“It’s a nice position to be in. Much better than last year,” 



Waterhouse said. 

“We went to the Magic Millions this year and bought the horses 

we wanted to buy. 

“We thought the winner was the loveliest filly in the sale and 

we didn’t think we would get her. We had to fight tenaciously to get 

her.” 

No Looking Back bounced from the outside gate in the field of 

ten and crossed to sit outside the leader Benedictus (Commands). 

Blazing Snitzel (2nd) (Snitzel), with Nash Rawiller aboard, 

pushed between the two leaders turning for home and looked a 

threat but when Hugh Bowman asked No Looking Back to extend 

she quickly put the result beyond doubt. 

“She’s most impressive and I thought both fillies ran enormous 

races,” Waterhouse said. 

“No Looking Back is just a lovely filly and I may run her one 

more time (before the Magic Millions) or I may turn her out. I’ll just 

wait and see.” 

Bowman said the winner still had improvement in her but was 

impressed with the way she attacked the line. 

“She’s pretty natural but she will improve,” Bowman said. 

“She’s still lacking a bit of confidence in what she is supposed 

to be doing, but when I asked her to stretch she was never going 

to get beat.”

Banimpire (Holy Roman Emperor) topped the opening 

session of the Goffs November Foal Sale on Friday when 

selling for €2,300,000 to Michel Zerolo of Oceanic 

Bloodstock. Zerolo purchased the dual Group 2 winner 

and Group 1 placed filly for owner Martin Schwartz and she will 

continue her racing career in America. 

The second highest price of the session was €260,000 that 

was paid for the stakes winning and Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) placed 

Barathea mare Alasha who was purchased by Lodge Park Stud. 

Consigned by The Aga Khan Studs, Alasha is the dam of the 

stakes winner Alanza (Dubai Destination) and was offered in foal to 

Raven’s Pass. The sale concludes on Saturday afternoon.

Analysis: Two great runs and one bad result with the first past 

the post He’s Remarkable being relegated to second after 

stewards deemed interference caused by his jockey Kerrin 

McEvoy approaching the 400m cost Luckygray the race. The 

race was run in usual frantic fashion He’s Remarkable secured a 

lovely position three back on the fence and was always travelling 

nicely within himself. Approaching the 600m McEvoy angled out 

causing interference to Waratah’s Secret who in turn fell back in 

the field causing server interference to the favourite Ranger and 

then secondarily to Luckygray who was racing on Ranger’s inside. 

Once in the straight He’s Remarkable ranged up to leaders and 

shot clear showing a good turn of foot and going away to score 

nicely with Luckygray flying late on the outside to be closest right 

on the line. In the usual course of events an unlucky runner up 

and a worthy winner with a jockey who gets a suspension for 

interference but not in this case with the stewards taking the 

winner down and reversed the placing in a truly remarkable 

decision. Taking away the disappointing protest both horses ran 

extremely well and both were deserving of victory. One has to feel 

for the connections of He’s Remarkable who have travelled their 

horse from New Zealand to Perth.

Outstanding racehorse to outstanding sire 

Analysis: Ortensia scored a well deserved Group 1 victory 

sprinting impressively in the straight to draw away on the line 

for a length victory over Rarefied. Craig Williams again gave the 

talented mare a great ride settling her on the back of the second 

favourite in fourth in the run. He switched her into the clear in

the straight and took a few strides to balance up but when she 

did she flew late and won with a little in hand. Rarefied ran well in 

defeat up on the pace and the first to commit for home he battled 

the whole way to the line but could not match the winners turn 

of foot. Grand Nirvana ran a great race, he settled back from his 

wide barrier and was forced to travel wide throughout. He was 

finishing on strongly at the finish for a good third. Hadabeclorka 

was also good in defeat coming from four back on the fence and 

cluttered up between runners, he was finishing strongly when 

clear late. Werd lead had a good speed and was fighting hard in 

the straight to tire very quickly in the final 50m to finish fifth.

Analysis: The race was run at a very genuine gallop, which allowed 

horses back in the field to play their part. Fazzle was away well but 

steadied immediately to settle in twelfth position, and at times 

raced ungenerously to be eight-lengths from the leader at the 

600 metres. She lengthened stride once into the clear at the 

400 metres, charged when asked for her best at the 200 metres 

and changed stride near the line for an easy win. From a wide 

gate, Casabella Lane bided her time second last, coming from 

ten-lengths away at the 600 metres to face a wall of horses into 

the home straight. She was switched inside to make a challenge 

at the 200 metres and despite a big run just found one better. 

Appiel improved to travel three back on the inner after being 

slowly away and ran into traffic problems on three occasions in 

the straight. After being badly hampered she finally saw some 

daylight near the rail in the last 100 metres and dashed home. 

Banchee worked into the clear at an opportune moment on the 

home turn after racing three back on the rail, but was unable to 

find the sprint necessary to threaten. Twilight Savings felt the 

rigours of working hard to race outside the leader and finished 

fifth, just ahead of Dating who travelled three wide in midfield.

Analysis: A super confident ride by the in form Craig Williams 

aboard King Saul who flew home late from second last on the 

turn cluttered up between runners to score with a little in hand. 

Williams took the second favourite back from a wide gate settling 

down second last before improving his position three wide mid 

race, Williams elected to take his mount back towards the fence 

and waited for runs between horses and when clear his mount 

responded and scored nicely, a classy horse. Caiguna was sound 

in defeat who came from a little worse then midfield taking inside 

runs and quickening up well when clear in the straight but she just 

found the winner too good.

Analysis: Postmans Daughter began smartly to lead at the 

post with a round to go, before steadying to settle fifth on the 

outer. Under a good hold when camped on the leaders at the 

600 metres, she found two-lengths after sprinting clear at the 

300 metres and kept giving to defy late challengers. Both second 

placed Mr Tipsy and November Rain in third had travelled in the 

three-wide line with cover. November Rain was six-lengths from 

the lead at the 600 metres and with Mr Tipsy, who stormed late 

after the tracking her, the pair wound up big finishes in the centre 

of the track. When it was all too late, Go Danny and Prairie Star 

arrived from beyond midfield with dashing runs.

Analysis: Despite being described by trainer Peter McKay as 

more of a three-year-old type, Travino showed he has raw talent 

when beating the top echelon of New Zealand juveniles. After 

working across to slot in three back on the outer from the outside 

barrier nine, Travino launched his challenge at the 300 metres. 

He asserted himself when exchanging a couple of bumps with 

Niobe over the concluding stages before changing stride near the 

line to win with authority. Heavily backed for her debut, Niobe 

travelled one place in front of Travino and did her utmost to justify 

the support in finishing close up in third. Possibly the unluckiest 

runner was second placed Silk Pins. She was awkwardly away 

and switched to the rail to improve three back on the inner. 

Blocked when attempting a rails run at the 350 metres, Silk Pins 

lost momentum angling across heels at the 300 metres before 

unwinding a strong finish in centre track for second. Backed late 

into favouritism, Seleno received all favours in the trail. She opted 

for run against the rail at the 300 metres, appeared a touch 

reluctant to take the gap, to round off solidly for a close fourth.

Analysis: In a tight four-way finish Grey Monarch proved slightly 

the better of Our Ol’ Fella and Dempsey who finished on from well 

back and wide for third. In the run Grey Monarch had a lovely run 

on the back of the leader Wolfe Dreams with Our Ol’ Fella fourth. 

Ivan Haggerty aboard Grey Monarch switched across the leaders 

heels on cornering and Grey Monarch responded well but Our Ol’ 

Fella quickly challenged on his outside and Wolfe Dreams fought 

back on his inside. Over the final 200m Grey Monarch proved 

slightly better grinding out a hard fought victory to score by three 

quarters of a length. Dempsey finished on well from second last 

and three wide throughout, he made good ground late out wide on 

the track. Our Ol’ Fella had every chance in the run and was not 

beaten far. Wolfe Dreams lead early on and battled the whole way 

to the line for a close fourth.

Analysis: The 100/1 outsider New Spice scored a strong on pace 

victory to cause a major upset. In the run New Spice settled down 

on the quarters of the leader It’s Judgement Day, with both of 

these runners going out to a clear five length lead at halfway. 

It’s Judgement Day tired on the corner leaving New Spice in front 

and surging clear again to maintain a clear advantage the whole 

way to the line in what was a good effort. Peg’s Pride had every 

chance in the run racing in fourth one out, she battled away in the 

straight without ever threatening the winner. Knightlike made up 

a lot of ground from fourth last and coming between runners in 

the straight to battle on for third without ever looking the winner.

she shot through closer to the fence on straightening. Premardal 

lead at a good pace with Dante’s Diamond racing in third on the 

fence and the eventual winner Answers Are was fifth one out with 

a trail. Dante’s Diamond took inside runs while Answers Are took 

corners three and four wide, she did not pick up as expected in 

the straight but kept on making ground under hard riding to grab 

Dante’s Diamond in the final strides to score. Sweet Serenity 

(3rd) and Elle Choisit (4th) both finished on strongly from well 

back in the field. Sweet Serenity came from third last on the fence 

taking runs between horses, she was not fully in the clear until

late on and with a few more strides would have finished alongside 

the winner. Elle Choisit travelled wide throughout and finished well 

in the middle of the track, she could have finished closer as well.

Analysis: Fillydelphia proved her class with a soft win against 

the older open company with a comfortable length and a quarter 

victory over the fast finishing Humma. In the run Fillydelphia 

secured a lovely run in fourth one out with a trail. The leader 

Rockdale increased the tempo approaching the 600m steeling 

a gap over his rivals. Fillydelphia quickly broached the gap and 

asserted soon after straightening, racing away to a good win. 

Humma settled down last in what was a muddling run race in 

the middle stages. He was a long way off the leader when the 

tempo increased markedly and to his credit he worked home 

nicely out wide in the straight for a good second. Rockdale had 

every chance in front and battled away in the straight for a well 

beaten third. Royal Reign was doing her best work late, from well 

back, for fourth.

Analysis: Always a hard fought sprint race, undisclosed was 

courageous in victory. After beginning smartly away from barrier 

one, Undisclosed steadied to trail at the 700 metres. He 

managed to get off the rail to challenge three wide straightening 

for the long run home and after working to the front at the 200 

metres he kept on giving. Second placed Double Barrel got to 

within a nose at the line after unwinding a big finish from three 

wide in midfield and four-lengths off the lead at the 600 metres. 

Sweet Suitor secured a good spot in fifth, steadied off heels at 

the 500 metres and, although held up before getting clear at the 

200, he never lifted sufficiently to really test the two ahead of 

him. The eye-catching run in the race came from Viva Roma, in 

fourth. She was steadied to the rear and was eight-lengths from 

the lead at the 600 metres. Working home near the rail, she was 

held up and blocked and despite dashing late was never clear. 

Eightlives camped in fourth and kept giving to finish close up in 

fifth, while the favourite Mae Jinx worked hard wide on the track 

to finally lead at the 600 metres and although she was resolute 

when challenged the run took its toll.

An objection lodged by Jockey P. Harvey rider of the fourth placed 

WARATAH’S SECRET against HE’S REMARKABLE (K. McEvoy) being 

declared the winner, alleging interference near the 600m was 

dismissed. In making this decision Stewards were not entirely 

satisfied that the amount of ground lost by WARATAH’S SECRET 

in this incident was greater than the official margin between it and 

HE’S REMARKABLE. 

An objection lodged by Jockey S. O’Donnell rider of the second 

placed LUCKYGRAY against HE’S REMARKABLE (K. McEvoy) being 

declared the winner, alleging indirect interference near the 600m 

was upheld, with the amended placings being: 

1st LUCKYGRAY (S. O’Donnell) 

2nd HE’S REMARKABLE (K. McEvoy) 

3rd WESTRIVER KEVYDONN (P. Carbery) 

4th WARATAH’S SECRET (P. Harvey) 

5th TRANQUILITY (G. Williams) 

In upholding this objection Stewards were of the opinion that the 

level of interference sustained by LUCKYGRAY in this incident was 

considerably greater than the long neck margin between it and 

HE’S REMARKABLE. 

PLAYING GOD (Steven Parnham) – Raced wide on straightening. 

WARATAH’S SECRET (Paul Harvey) – Tightened and bumped 

near the 600m and then blundered from heels. Returned with 

lacerations to the near hock. 

RANGER (William Pike) – Checked severely passing the 600m 

unbalancing its rider for some distance. Returned with lacerations 

to the near fore knee. 

KING KOOL KAT (Duncan Miller) – Raced ungenerously getting its 

head in the air at the 1400m. Returned with abrasions to both 

hind legs. 

BATTLE EMBLEM (Kyra Yuill) – Checked severely passing the 600m. 

BIG TED (Marco Chui) – Raced wide throughout. Bumped passing the 

600m. Crowded and steadied when under pressure approaching 

the 400m. 

KINCAPLE (NZ) (Troy Turner) – Restrained and taken outwards 

passing the 600m. 

LUCKYGRAY (Shaun O’Donnell) – Checked severely unbalancing its 

rider passing the 600m. 

WESTRIVER KEVYDONN (Patrick Carbery) – Commenced to race 

keenly near the 1400m and was restrained from heels and shifted 

outwards. 

General: On inquiry Jockey K. McEvoy (HE’S REMARKABLE) 

pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding under ARR.137(a) for 

allowing his mount to shift outwards passing the 600m causing 

WARATAH’S SECRET (P. Harvey) to be tightened and blunder 

with RANGER (W. Pike), LUCKYGRAY (S. O’Donnell) and BATTLE 

EMBLEM (K. Yuill) all being checked in consequence. Jockey K. 

McEvoy was subsequently suspended from riding in races for a 

period of 28 days to commence from midnight 23 November 2011 

and to expire at midnight 21 December 2011. In assessing penalty, 

Stewards took into account the low to mid-level of carelessness, 

the considerable amount of interference, his guilty plea and prior 

good record and that his actions had resulted in his mount being 

relegated to second position.
