new young trainer she proved what already many felt she
was – a Group 1 quality mare.
For Messara it was his second Group 1 victory, his first
being with a six-year-old mare; Alverta (Flying Spur) who won
the Coolmore Classic (Gr 1, 1500m) in 2010. While for
jockey Craig Williams it capped off a great spring carnival
and a good last day in Australia for the year after also
winning the W A Guineas (Gr 2, 1600m) aboard King Saul
(Flying Pegasus) earlier on the card.
“To win a Group One win on this mare is great,” Williams
said.
“She deserved to have it. She had one and she lost it.
“She was awesome today. I have such a great relationship
with her. I trust her and she was really good.”
Ortensia beat Rarefied (Commands) by a length with
Grand Nirvana (Scenic) a close third.
“I’m overwhelmed,” said part-owner Alister Fraser.
“I semi retired her but I thought there was still something left.
“It was unfortunate the incident happened,” O’Donnell said. “I wanted her to go out on top. I thought she deserved to go
“My thoughts were that we should have won and I was a out a winner.”
shattered man coming back in.
Fraser said he and Messara would discuss whether to give
“I didn’t know who did it [the interference] and I told the trainer Ortensia another preparation in the autumn before she goes to
Gino Poletti we should look at the film.
stud.
“I’m happy. I’ve won a Group One before but this is my
first win in a million dollar race.”
Despite the result being determined in the stewards room
nothing should be taken away from the talented Luckygray
(4 gr g Bradbury’s Luck – Damah Lady, by Mukaddamah).
Today’s victory was his seventh win from nine career starts
and earnings of $876,125.
He is far and away his young sire’s Bradbury’s Luck
(Redoute’s Choice) principal earner and first Group 1 winner.
Bradury’s Luck joins Stratum as the only sons of Redoute’s
Choice to sire a Group 1 winner.
Luckygray was bred by Mr C V McWhinney in Queensland
and was sold as a weanling to Riverslea Farm at the 2008
Inglis Australian Weanling and Breeding Stock Sale for
$31,000. Riverslea re-offered Luckygray as a yearling at the
Ortensia
Magic Millions WA Yearling Sale where he was purchased by
his trainer Gino Poletti for $46,000.
Ortensia (6 b m Testa Rossa - Aerate’s Pick, by Picnicker) is now
GROUP 1 FOR ORTENSIA
the winner of ten of her 29 starts and earnings of $1,553,905.
She was purchased by Steve Brem at the Inglis Melbourne Premier
A second thought to return the Group 2 winning mare Oretensia Yearling Sale for $50,000 from the consignment of Riverside Stud.
(Testa Rossa) to work and forego a career at stud for another 12
months has paid dividends for her connections and new trainer
Paul Messara with a win in yesterday’s $1 million Winterbottom FAZZLE TOO GOOD IN BREEDERS
Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).
Ortensia was a Group 1 winner in all but name after being first The combination of a torrid pace and a smart ride by Vinny
past the post in The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1100m) in 2010 but subsequently Colgan paved the way for an impressive victory by Fazzle (Johar)
had the race taken from her due to a positive swab. She was also in the Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on
the winner of the Winterbottm Stakes in 2009 when it was still a Saturday at Pukekohe.
Group 2 race. Now upgraded to Group 1 and under the care of her Trained at nearby Waiuku by Moira Murdoch and Dominic Olson,
