in South Africa when that colt became the first horse so far to
complete the double, is not concerned by the task ahead.
“I don’t believe in history,” he said. “Everything works out,” Payne
said.
Criterion certainly looked a genuine Golden Slipper prospect
in winning yesterday after overcoming a torrid trip from his wide
barrier (13). The colt was a little slow to begin and was last early,
in the 14 horse field, before improving very wide approaching the
home turn.
Despite his hard run, Criterion dashed up to challenge at the
200m then fought hard under Glyn Schofield to win by a half neck
from the Darley runner Sidestep (Exceed And Excel). Meticulously
(Not A Single Doubt) was three and quarter lengths further away
in third.
“The wide draw probably helped him because he’s got a big
action and they went along for him,” winning jockey Glen Schofield
said.
Criterion won his first start beating Gai Waterhouse’s Golden
Slipper prospect Sweet Idea (Snitzel) at Rosehill on 3 November
then resumed with a good third to Never Can Tell (War Pass) and
Whittington (Tale Of The Cat) in the Canonbury Stakes (Listed,
1100m) at Rosehill on 16 February.
“He beat Sweet Idea and that filly came out and won in Sydney
last week but he has got more improvement than all of them,”
Payne said.
Payne imagines the usually furious tempo of a Golden Slipper
will also suit a horse who continues to learn his trade.
“I put the blinkers on him today after what he did last start and
I think he’s going to get even better again,” he said.
Criterion (2 c Sebring – Mica’s Pride by Bite The Bullet) has now
raced three times for two wins with prize money of $215,250. He is
a son of the 2008 Golden Slipper winner Sebring (More Than Ready)
out of the Group Three winner Mica’s Pride (Bite The Bullet) who
has produced five winners from six runners including the stakes
winners Varenna Miss (Redoute’s Choice) and Silently (Anabaa).
Criterion’s second dam is the unraced mare Gainesville (Afleet)
who produced ten winners from ten runners including the stakes
winner Amah Rock (Fastnet Rock) and is the grandam of the Listed
winner Bhutane Dane (Danehill Dancer).
Mica’s Pride has a yearling colt by O’Reilly and has been covered
by Fastnet Rock (Danehill) for the last two seasons.
Canberra Cup To CourT
The Danny Williams-trained stayer Court Connection (Lonhro)
from nearby Goulburn claimed a ‘hometown’ victory in yesterday’s
Canberra Centenary Cup (Listed, 2000m).
Producing the turn of speed that has now carried him to nine
wins, Court Connection ($6.50) reached the lead at the 100m and
then staved off Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) bound Coliseo (Arena) to
win by a half neck.
The Peter Snowden-trained mare Sindarin (Redoute’s Choice)
finished three-quarters of a length away third after racing threedeep
without cover.
Williams, who trains at nearby Goulburn, said the win carried
special meaning for his stable.
“It’s a little bit close to heart. It’s close to home and it’s always a
privilege to win races here,” Williams said.
Williams, who has a strike-rate that is respected in more than
one racing jurisdiction as a regular Queensland carnival visitor and
a frequent traveler to Melbourne, says Court Connection has always
been a committed racehorse.
“He’s just been a great horse for us because he’s never been a
star in the stable yet he’s always delivered,” he added.
Court Connection (6 g Lonhro – Imperatrix by Strategic),
a $100,000 2008 Inglis Sydney Australian Easter Yearling Sales
purchase from the draft of Willow Park Stud, has now raced 31 times
for nine wins and seven placing for prize money of $305,605.
He is out of the stakes winning Strategic (Zeditave) mare
Imperatrix, and Court Connection is her only winner. His second
dam, Curator (Assert) was unraced and produced the dual Group
One winner Voile D’Or (Dieu D’Or) as well as the Group One winner
Curata Storm (Dieu D’Or).
CompliCaTed Guineas
Complicate (Commands) earned a comparison with his former
Group One winning stablemate Mental (Lonhro) after claiming
yesterday’s Canberra Guineas (Listed, 1400m).
Jumping from barrier eight, Complicate took up the lead from
his wide draw, under Kerrin McEvoy and travelled smoothly to the
turn. When asked, he quickened and set up a winning lead inside
the final 200m. The Peter Snowden-trained gelding beat Ashokan
(More Than Ready) by three quarters of a length with Brave Soul
(More Than Ready) a further length back in third.
“He will probably have a breather now,” Snowden said.
“The A grade races are coming up in Sydney but he’s not there
yet.”
Snowden took a similar approach last year with Mental who
won the Patinack Farm Classic (Gr 1, 1200m) (registered as Victoria
Racing Club Stakes) last November.
“He reminds me a bit of Mental,” Snowden said. “I’ll probably
look at the Hawkesbury Guineas at the end of the carnival and then
possibly take him to Brisbane.”
Complicate (3 g Commands – Chaparra by Canny Lad) has
now won three times and been placed second a further three
times from seven starts with his earnings totaling $155,330. His
dam, Chaparra (Canny Lad) was unplaced and has produced six
winners from six runners including the dual Group Two winner
El Cambio, who being by Commands (Danehill), is a brother to
Complicate. His second dam is the Group winner and Group One
placed mare Ochiltree (Twig Moss) who produced five winners
including the Alister Clark Stakes (Gr 2, 2040m) winner Spinney
(Octagonal).
The 2013 Magic Millions Adelaide Yearling Sale gets
underway at 6.30pm this evening at Magic Millions
Morphettville sales complex. The start has been put back
by 30 minutes to allow a special tribute to David Coles, who
was recently inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame, at 6pm.
A total of 431 yearlings have been catalogued for this year’s sale,
with the 250 yearlings catalogued for Session One selling today and
tomorrow and the 181 yearlings in Session Two selling on Wednesday.
This year’s sale contains yearlings by South Australian-based sires
as well as the leading sires from NSW and Victorian farms. Willow
Grove Stud’s Mint Lane (Maria’s Mon) has the greatest number of lots
catalogued, with 16, whilst both Good Journey (Nureyev) and Written
Tycoon (Iglesia) have 14 lots catalogued. Casino Prince (Flying Spur),
a graduate from the 2005 sale, has four yearlings catalogued. The
Patinack Farm-based stallion was sold by Gerry Harvey’s Baramul Stud
to Anthony Cummings for $140,000. He went onto win the Skyline
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at two, ran second in the Australian Guineas (Gr
1, 1600m) at three and won the Chipping Norton (Gr 1, 1600m) the
following year.
Baramul Stud and Eliza Park have the biggest drafts this year,
both with 27 yearlings catalogued. The biggest draft from a South
The ill-fated War Pass has produced two winners to date from his
colt is a half brother to the Australia Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Stella
Cadente (Centaine), whilst his dam is a half sister to Bint Marscay
lot 247, who is also being offered by Mill Park as Agent, is a Testa
mare Pushing Daisies making him a half brother to the Epsom
Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Captain Sonador (Shamardal), who was
himself sold by Mill Park.
The strength of the sale has increased in recent years, with the
Session One average climbing from $26,792 in 2010 to $34,843 last
year, representing a 30% increase.
“We were very busy today after a steady start to inspections on
Friday and Saturday,” said David Somers, Eliza Park General Manger of
Operations.
“There looks to be a growing buying bench and early indications
are solid. We have some nice horses across the board and they should
sell accordingly – we have managed to have an excellent clearance
rate this season and this should continue given the interest.”
“The general talk coming into this years Adelaide Magic Millions
sale is as good as it has been in many years. The buyers are all in town
and credit has to go to Adrian Hancock and the team from Magic
Millions. The sale complex is looking fantastic and the vibe around the
complex has been very positive,” said Sam Hayes of Cornerstone Stud.
“We had one of our busiest days at a sale today. We have a
consistent line up of colts and our clients are prepared to meet the
market. There is a lot of interest in our Hussonet colt [lot 117] and we
have an impressive colt by Al Maher [lot 178]. The Good Journey’s have
been popular but my personal pick of our draft is a Reaan colt out of
Giftenary [lot 156]. He is the most athletic mover we have had at a sales
in quite some time.
“We are looking forward to tomorrow and will have water, coffee
[and Panadol] at the ready for buyers that have enjoyed another fun
night in the City of Churches. What happens in Adelaide….!!!!”
Adrian Hancock, who was appointed the South Australian
Consultant for Magic Millions last year, said yesterday, “This sale has
enormous potential to be a major player in the Australian yearling
sales circuit. It’s a place where buyers and vendors can enjoy a great
two or three days of a fun atmosphere amongst the business of buying
and selling.
“To me it’s the grass roots of the industry. The sale average is
$35,000, which is realistically where most people are at. It will be a
true litmus test of where the market is, we have vendors ranging from
major commercial operations to small breeders and equally a diverse
buying bench that includes trainers, who only have a couple, as well as
our leading trainers.
The response across the board to the yearlings and to the complex
have been very positive. Magic Millions have put a lot into this sale,
giving it a huge boost through sales ground improvements and
promotion of the sale and its good to see prospective buyers here
today [Sunday], which is very encouraging. I hope that Magic Millions
are rewarded for their investment in the sale.
In saying this, the market is still very selective. Its the same old
story - good horses will sell well, but the bottom will be tough, though
I hope that the breeders who have been supportive of the sale get
rewarded for the effort that they have put in, because there are some
really nice horses at every price range on the grounds.”
Emirates Park announced yesterday that Mulaazem (Dubai
sustained in last weekends Hobartville Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m),
and will commence stud duties later this year at Emirates
Park Digges’s Rest property in Victoria.
Trained by Peter Moody for His Excellency Nasser Lootah,
Mulaazem won three of his seven starts and was placed second twice.
At two he won his second start by ten lengths over 1300m at
Sandown. At three this year, he won over 1400m at Cranbourne in
January before taking last month’s Autumn Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) where
he beat Group One winners Fiveandahalfstar (Hotel Grand) and Super
Cool (Fastnet Rock).
Following this victory, Moody spoke said “He’s a high quality colt.
He’s a half-brother to a champion and he’s now a Group Two winner
with a helluva pedigree, so there’s certainly a good future ahead of
him.”
Emirates Park CEO, Trevor Lobb, said on breaking the news
of Mulaazem’s stud plans: “This current crop of three-year-olds is
outstanding at all levels, possibly the best seen for a decade, and we
were very much looking to campaigning him through the autumn and
beyond following his brilliant victory over Fiveandahalfstar and Super
Cool. The injury has brought a premature end to his exciting racing
career and everyone involved is very disappointed.”
Mulaazem is out of the Danehill (Danzig) mare Watchful making
him a half brother to Darley’s new Group One winning sire Sepoy
(Elusive Quality). His dam is out of Canny Miss (Marscay) making her a
sister to the Queensland Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Camarena who is
herself the dam of the AJC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner
Camarilla (Elusive Quality).
Lobb added: “I know the family very well through Canny Lad,
Sepoy and Camarilla. Members of this female line include at least two
individual Golden Slipper winners, one Blue Diamond winner and four
individual Blue Diamond Prelude winners. I feel he is an outstanding
type, had a lot of potential, and is a great new option for Victorian
breeders. We will be supporting him with quality mares.”
An introductory service fee of $7,700 (inc GST) has been set for
Mulaazem and a limited number of lifetime breeding rights will be
made available.
The John Moore-trained Straight Gold (Stratum) displayed
a tremendous turn-of-foot to win the Class 2 Singapore
Turf Club Trophy over 1000m at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Jumping fairly from barrier six, the Stratum four-yearold
gelding was positioned handily behind race-favourite Little Cow
(Holy Roman Emperor) and found a clear passage with a furlong
remaining. Straight Gold cruised home strongly under Weichong
Marwing to beat track specialist Go Baby Go (Medal Of Honour) by
three-quarter of a length while Regency Luck made up some ground
to take third.
Moore was delighted with Straight Gold’s performance with the
addition of a sheepskin browband.
“He used to jump up at the gate last season and so we tried to use
a trick, putting the sheepskin browband on him. As a result, he had a
very good run behind Little Cow and kicked well.
“It’s a shame that he showed a substantial amount of blood in his
trachea in the previous run but we scoped him last week and there’s
no blood at all.”
9 IN PERSON WITH
Bjorn Baker started training in
partnership with his father Murray
Baker. He relocated to Sydney in August
2011 and had three horses. He has
been enjoying a great season this year,
currently sitting 11th on the NSW
Trainers Premiership table having
trained 30 winners to date with a
strike-rate of 19.5%, headlined by Group
winning two-year-old filly Twilight
Royale.
1. You have had a number
of promising juveniles
race this season already,
however, do you have any
unraced two-year-olds are
you are looking forward to
them reaching the track?
“I have a Written Tycoon colt called
Hanwritten, who has won a trial and is
currently having a spell.”
2. What are the targets for
Cantonese this autumn?
“He is still a few weeks from
trialing. Once he’s fit I plan to run him
every second week, until the New Year
hopefully, including Sydney, Scone,
Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth.”
3. What attracted you the most to Twilight Royale
who you bought for $45,000 at the Inglis Melbourne
Premier Yearling Sale last year?
“She is by a proven sire out of a running family and was athletic
and had a good nature, which has been reflected on the track. Also I
knew the breeder Terry Dickson and thought if I buy it off him he may
give me another to train - which he has.”
4. How many yearlings have you purchased at the
yearling sales so far this year
and which is the one which
excites you the most for next
year?
“I have purchased about ten so
far. The most exciting long term is a
Zabeel – Prized Gem colt from New
Zealand but I doubt he will be up next
year. I bought a colt by Testa Rossa
out of Dark Star that I am hoping can
emulate Twilight Royale and win the
Melbourne Sales Inglis bonus race.”
5. What are the qualities that
you look for in a yearling when
you are at the sales?
“This is hard to quantify – I look at
the horse holistically, rather than at it
piece by piece. It is crucial that they
move well and I like to buy a proven
sire but easier said than done. My first
impression is more often than not important.”
6. What was the main reason behind leaving New
Zealand to set up training at Warwick Farm and what
do you like about training at Warwick Farm?
“It is getting harder to retain quality horses in New Zealand as
most promising horses find their way abroad. Australia was always
the aim when we had a promising horse and I thought if I want to
compete here on an ongoing basis I have to be based here. Warwick
Farm has outstanding facilities, the weather makes working with
horses much easier and it is centrally located which makes placing
my team easier.”
7. Would you consider setting up a satellite yard
elsewhere in Australia?
“Never say never, but at the moment I am really enjoying Sydney
and the facilities at Warwick Farm are outstanding.”
8. Which race would you most like to win anywhere in
the world and why?
“The Arc De Triomphe – it’s such a prestigious and time-honoured
race, and I have been to it twice and had a heap of fun.”
9. What is your favourite racecourse in the world and
why is it?
“Warwick Farm because my horses perform well here and it is a
luxury to walk the horses to the races.”
10. If you had to invite four guests to a dinner party
(past or present), who would they be and why?
“I asked my wife, Andrea, and she said she thought my answer
would be Bjorn, Bjorn, Bjorn and Bjorn. I don’t think I agree as I have
heard my five jokes on rotation ad nauseam.”
12 uAE NEWS monday 11 march 2013 ANZ
Super Saturday certainly lived up to its billing, especially for
Godolphin and trainer Saeed bin Suroor who combined to
win four of the seven races, including both the Group one
features. These were landmark victories for the Godolphin
team with Hunter’s Light (Dubawi) providing Godolphin trainers
with their 200th Group One/Grade One winner in the Al Maktoum
Challenge Round 3 (Gr 1), over the same 2000m all-weather course
and distance as the Dubai World Cup.
The world’s richest horse race, the US$10million Dubai World Cup,
is sponsored by Emirates Airline as was the whole of Super Saturday
and Bin Suroor will be hoping that Hunter’s Light can emulate three
of his previous winners of this race, Dubai Millennium (Seeking The
Gold), Street Cry (Machiavellian) and Electrocutionist (Red Ransom)
who all won both contests.
Silvestre De Sousa rode the winner and said: “He just keeps
improving and after our win in Round 2 of the Al Maktoum Challenge
he was even more impressive here with the slight step up in trip
suiting him.
“This is my first Group One winner in Dubai and the same horse
supplied me with my first European Group One so he is clearly a real
favourite of mine. Hopefully he has a big chance in the Dubai World
Cup itself.”
The trainer’s quartet were all ridden by different jockeys and
William Buick was in the saddle on Sajjhaa (King’s Best) who opened
her account at the highest level in the concluding Jebel Hatta (Gr 1).
This race was run over the same 1800m course and distance as the
Dubai Duty Free.
Sajjhaa, now a six-year-old mare, was actually winning for a third
time at the 2013 Dubai World Cup Carnival after claiming the Cape
Verdi (Gr 2, 1600m) and the Balanchine Stakes (Gr 2, 1800m) and Bin
Suroor said: “She has really thrived in the Dubai weather and has
pleasantly surprised us with how much she has improved. William
had to be patient waiting for a gap and he gave her a great ride.”
Earlier, the trainer saddled African Story (Pivotal) to win the Burj
Nahaar (Gr 3, 1600m) for the second year running. Mickael Barzalona
rode him on this occasion to a comfortable success and the horse will
surely be hard to beat as he defends his crown in the Godolphin Mile
(Gr 2), over the same 1600m on the all-weather, in three weeks.
Kieren Fallon was aboard Secret Number (Raven’s Pass) who
initiated the quartet in the Al Bastakiya (Listed, 1900m) the stepping
stone towards the UAE Derby (Gr 2, 1800m).
Both the sprints on the card were won impressively with the
Mike De Kock-trained Shea Shea (National Emblem) breaking the
1000m turf track record in the Meydan Sprint (Listed), before Richard
Mullen won the Mahab al Shimaal (Gr 2) aboard Reynaldothewizard
Hunter’s Light Lands Official Dubai World Cup prep
(Speightstown). The pair kicked clear 200m out in the 1200m allweather
contest to post a career best effort.
The other turf race, the Dubai City Of Gold (Gr 2, 2410m), was won
by the Marco Botti-trained and Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock
(ATB)-owned Jakkalberry (Storming Home), who ran third in last
year’s Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).
Darren Dance of ATB said Jakkalberry would now head to the
Dubai Gold Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) on World Cup night.
“He’s one of those old marvels that just continues to get better
with age,” Dance told Racing Victoria.
“We were hopeful of a win and obviously when Masterstroke got
scratched at the gates it was a massive favour, but Marco was very
confident that we’d run first or second.
“The biggest cause for concern was whether there was going to
be enough speed to cart him into it and once the speed went on midrace
it set it up for him to really run on at the finish.”
Dance said Jakkalberry would be set for another Melbourne Cup
campaign where he could be joined by another of the syndication
company’s European purchases, Dandino (Dansili), who is also in
training in Newmarket with Botti.
“Dandino will race at Royal Ascot before coming out to race in
both the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups,” Dance said.
“He’s a similar sort of horse to Jakkalberry with a very good turn
of foot.”
Analysis: The Darley-raced Complicate stepped up from his
recent midweek Canterbury win to score another good all-the-way
victory, this time in Listed company. Complicate went straight to
the lead, travelling comfortably, before pinching a break at the
home turn and he was never seriously threatened at any stage in
the straight. Top weight Ashokan was ridden from behind today,
settling fifth between runners. He moved to second at the 200m
and kept making ground for a sound second after having every
chance. Brave Soul was a little slow to begin and was ninth on the
rails on settling. She was held up for a run at the 600m, getting
a run in the centre passing the 300m and kept on nicely for good
third, looking a little unlucky. Zin Zan Eddie was about seventh
and three wide but was under pressure from the turn, running
on fairly well for fourth while Turnley also raced wide, just past
midfield and fanned even wider on the home turn before making
ground for fifth.
Continuing Widden’s
successful Golden
Slipper tradition
Analysis: The David Payne-trained Criterion staked genuine
claims for next month’s Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) in
putting up a very good effort to win. He was a little slow to begin
from his wide barrier (13) and was last early before improving very
wide from the 700m. But despite working hard, he dashed up to
challenge at the 200m then fought hard to the line for a narrow
but impressive win. Sidestep began well and raced outside the
leader (Quartzite) before drawing to the lead on straightening. He
fought back gamely when challenged at the 200m, just finding
the winner a little too good in the closing stages. Meticulously
worked up wide early from his outside barrier (14) but was caught
three wide outside the leading pair (Quartzite & Sidestep). He
continued to battle on gamely in the straight, after his hard run,
for a very good third. Flak Jacket went back from his wide draw
and was third last on settling. He attempted to improve at the
turn but was blocked for a run but ran on quite well, when clear
at the 200m, for a sound fourth. Mr Jackman was a handy fourth
to the turn and seemed to have every chance, holding on for fifth
while the favourite Halin’ Diamonds was about tenth in the centre
in a packed field to the turn, but had trouble getting fully clear
running, before battling on for sixth, beaten six and half lengths.
and three wide with cover before improving from the 600m. He
came up to challenge passing the 200m, took a narrow lead at
the 100m then fought on for a good half neck win. Coliseo was
second last to the 600m, went wide rounding the home turn, then
ran on well for a good second. Sindarin was a handy fifth but
trapped three wide without cover. She put in a good run to take a
narrow lead at the 200m then fought on for a sound third after a
hard run. Last year’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Niwot was
last to the 600m and was under pressure from that point, but he
kept responding, making ground for a solid fourth under his 60kg
weight, looking on target for another Cup bid at Randwick next
month. Outsider Dubai Ruler had a nice trip in fourth place and
battled on quite well for fifth. Shadow’s In The Sun raced outside
the leader (Fast Clip) but disappointed in finishing sixth while the
Gai Waterhouse-trained Fast Clip also disappointed dropping out
to finish last after leading to the home turn.
to challenge that horse shortly after straightening and then held
Peaches a close third.
Analysis: The well-travelled Niblick, having his first start for Albury
trainer Brett Cavanogh after racing more recently in WA, scored
a narrow but game win. Niblick soon led and set a reasonable
pace. He then stuck grimly to his task from the 200m, fighting
off a number of challengers to win in a photo. Upshot was about
sixth one off the rails, fanned wide at the turn and looked the
winner when he put in a strong run at the 100m, failing narrowly
in a photo. Outsider Glad You Called was fourth one off the rails
and moved up wide at the turn. She then kept fighting on nicely to

figure in a three-way photo. Soledad was eighth one off the rails,
went wide at the 600m and finished fairly well to take fourth.
