TASMANIAN SUCCESS IN GRAND
NATIONAL STEEPLE
Morsonique and Titch land Nationals at Sandown Park
With the change in Victoria’s jumping
rules, the traditional Grand National
races are no longer held at Flemington,
but instead at Sandown Park with the
new season renewals completed in
testing conditions yesterday. A small but
vocal group of animal rights protesters
at the course served as a reminder that
this could have been the final running of
the races, first run in 1866 and won by
horses like Mosstrooper and Redleap, but
that is of no matter to Devonport trainer
Michael Trinder (pictured) who prepared
Morsonique to win the $150,000 Grand
National Steeple, writes Darryl Sherer.
We can’t say watched, as Trinder
admitted later that he could not bear to
watch the race himself, instead listening
to the on-course broadcast. Morsonique
(Miesque’s Son) led for much of the
4350m and then found plenty to fight off
the challenge of Juan Carlos and go clear,
eventually winning by 15 lengths.
“I walked up and down the top grandstand,
not watching, just listening to the call with
great interest,” Trinder said afterwards.
“I knew we had the horse on song for
today’s race. I thought today was real
chance to win a really good race.”
It was a real Trinder family affair as well,
as son Adam not only rode the gelding
to win but also supervised Morsonique’s
preparation.
Trinder is thinking further afield with
Morsonique, who he believes could win
declared that he would not be the one
to take the 10-year-old to England as
he is not willing to travel further than
Melbourne from his base at Spreyton in
Devonport.
“He’s a lovely wet-tracker,” Trinder said.
“At 10 years old probably too old for a
jumper but not in England where I think
his market lies. He’s a very, very exciting
horse.”
Morsonique’s task was made a little
easier when the odds-on favourite
Tarawera fell in the back straight on the
second lap. >
To the disappointment possibly of the protesters, Tarawera was
up quickly and jumped the next fence on his own before being
caught by the clerk of the course. Vets examined the gelding and
gave him a clean bill of health.
This was the second win in the race for Trinder also won with
Outstride in 1994 and he sees some comparisons. “I liken him to
Outstride. He sees every fence and jumps them economically and
he’s a very, very safe conveyance,”
In the $150,000 Grand National Hurdle, the Michael Kent-trained
The Pentagon went into the lead just before the home turn and then
powered home to eventually defeat Regal Heir by eight lengths with
the top-weight Desert Master sticking on gamely for third.
“We wanted to get him in with a reasonably light weight so we
tried to give him a light program,” Kent said. “It has all gone to
plan so I’m very pleased.
“He’s barely 15 hands and he had 68 (kg) last start and thought it
told. We were pleased to see him get down in the weights.”
SANS fRONTIERES CUP POSSIBLE
Saturday’s Geoffrey Freer Stakes (Gr 3) winner in England Sans
Frontieres (Galileo) is a possible Melbourne Cup runner. Winner of
the Princess of Wales’s Stakes (Gr 2) at Newmarket last month,
Sans Frontieres was always prominent and was driven to the front
two-furlongs out in this mile and five furlongs contest.
Sans Frontieres was chased hard by Laaheb but stayed on well
and proved too strong in the run to the line.
“I didn’t think he’d handle this ground but we wanted to find out
because we want to go for the Irish St Leger,” winning trainer
Jeremy Noseda told the Racing Post.
“There’s a chance he’s still better on fast ground but it’s the
Irish Leger next and then we hope to have a tilt at the Melbourne
Cup.”
Jockey Johnny Murtagh said, “He kind of idled a bit in front. His
ears pricked when he was up near the crowd. He’s a good horse
with a good engine and going over the distance has helped him
too.
Kent said he would “give the (steeple) chases a go” with The
Pentagon next season.
In the $100,000 J J Houlahan Hurdle, the Patrick Payne trained Titch
(Lord Ballina) had no trouble justifying favouritism, coming right away
in the final stages to defeat The Member (Galileo) by eight lengths.
“It really gives a sense of achievement,” Payne said later. “A lot of
these horses have jumped since day one and you are with them
all the time.”
Titch has now won all three of his races over jumps and Payne
indicated that the son of Lord Ballina has now earned a break
“He’s got a mighty leap on him, he jumped really carefully today.
He chipped in short when he needed to and he went long when
he needed to. He’ll have a rest now and he will get ready for the
bigger races next year.”
Some Are Bent struggled throughout and was beaten more than
20 lengths, the nine-year-old’s trainer Robert Smerdon confirming
that the champion jumper is now retired.
NZ TRIALS Off
The trials for Wingatui on Tuesday, August 17, have been cancelled
due to weather conditions.
Military Rose (General Nediym) will be travelling to Melbourne on
Tuesday. Trainer Gillian Heinrich had planned a Golden Rose preparation
but wet weather has forced a change of plans. The Danehill Stakes
at Flemington in September is the likely first start for Military Rose.
DAMON
IN DEAUVILLE
Damon Gabbedy is at the Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale
Overnight the weather changed and Deauville has been drenched.
The annual Weatherbys & Racing Post luncheon is held at the
Royal Barriere hotel which is rather handily placed across the
road from the vast expanse of sand that is Deauville’s beach.
With the weather as it was however, there was no opportunity to
enjoy the sea air and instead guests were entertained inside.
As with any party here in Deauville, or so it would seem, there
was no shortage of champagne and foie gras. A buffet meant
that no ordering was required and consequently there were no
‘surprises on my plate’.
The weather put off a good number of potential race goers,
however, a small shower or as it was in reality - a torrential
downpour - was not going to scare me off and I walked down to
the racecourse where we were treated to two Group races.
Fellow Australian Philippa Duncan noted how good it was that
we were able to actually get close to the horses in both the preparade
and parade rings. Back in Australia, even as an owner,
you do not get the opportunity to get close to the horses.
Over here the FRBC gave us paddock/mounting enclosure
passes and we were able to stand under the trees in the parade
ring as the runners walked around us. No only do you feel part of
the action, but you stand alongside the leading owners, breeders
and trainers in Europe. Surely in Australia ‘health and safety’ has
gone a little too far. I don’t think I have read too many reports
from Europe of owners being kicked, trodden on or flattened by
their thoroughbreds in the parade ring. The AJC and VRC could
really take a lesson from France Galop on this.
ANZ
Arqana graduate and last year’s Hong Kong Cup and 2008
French Derby winner Vision D’Etat won the Prix Contaut-Biron (Gr 3). In
the next, Peinture Rare, by the immortal Sadler’s Wells earned valuable
black type when winning the Prix de Pomone (Gr 2) beating High
Heeled (High Chaparral) and Burne The Breeze who is bred and owned
by ‘Lady T’ who we all know from Bloomsbury Stud in New Zealand.
My punting prowess has reached international shores as I
decided to follow Corey Brown in the Hermes Jockey’s Challenge
where my first three bets on French shores were a total wipe out.
After a ‘damp’ afternoon at the races and the ruin of a rather
fine suit, we returned to the sales ground where the evening
session began. There was very lively trade in the ring. Australian
interests were represented by Michael Goodbody, who bought
a pair of colts by Montjeu and Danehill Dancer for €300,000
and €200,000 respectively on behalf of Paul Fudge of Warratagh
Holdings. Both colts are set to remain in training in France.
At the end of the sale Angus Gold kindly invited ‘the Australian’s’
- myself, Terry Henderson, Philippa Duncan, Peter Maher and the
gorgeous Kate Brideoake; daughter of Melbourne trainer David
who is studying law in Denmark (she clearly takes after her
mother) to join him for dinner at 21, a rather good restaurant
a mere stones throw from the sales. Angus assembled a truly
international group with Diego and Dolores from South America
who have a small farm of 19,000 hectares, the delightful Ariane
from Chile and Newmarket’s leading vet John McVeigh.
Not only is the food and wine in 21 some of the best on offer in
Deauville but when the desert plates are cleared the music is
cranked up, tables are pushed back and the dancing and singing
begins. I did my best Robbie Williams impersonation where at
2.30 in the morning I really believed I could sing like him. My
audience was less convinced. I think the music ground to a halt at
half past something and I found my way back to the hotel by way
of my Arqana bike. I have discovered that drinking and cycling is a
dangerous combination and have the grazes to prove it.
I awoke on Sunday morning, stumbled over my bike which had
some how made its way to my room. The mini bar was open, empty
of all food items and there was an axe in my head that had to be
removed. Several strong coffees later, I am feeling human again
and off to the most fantastic days racing to watch the wonder
mare Goldikova attempt her 11th Group 1 win and enjoy a lunch
courtesy of the Niarchos family’s Haras de Fresnay-Le-Buffard.
Life is tough in Deauville, but it is surely one of the must do
things for anyone involved in the bloodstock industry.
DAY THREE AT DEAUVILLE
The third session of the Arqana August Yearling Sale at Deauville
yesterday saw 66 of the 94 horses offered for sale change hands
for a gross of ¤4,761,000, a figure down almost 20% on the same
day in 2009. The average of ¤72,136 had decreased by 7.5% on
last year, but the median rose by 8% to ¤65,000.
Topping Sunday’s session was lot 294, a colt by Dubawi sold to
Sylvain Vidal for ¤240,000. The colt is the first foal out of the Listed
winner Samya from the family of Irish 2000 Guineas (Gr 1) third Soul
City and New Zealand stakeswinner Oakfield, and was consigned by
Ecurie des Monceaux. Other feature lots included a colt from the first
crop of Dutch Art sold to Sir Robert Ogden for ¤180,000; and a
daughter of Dubawi who fetched ¤140,000 from Francois Rohaut.
Lot 237 meanwhile provided Australian pinhooker Gary Mudgeway
with a good return on the ¤38,000 he paid for the filly at the
Arqana December Sale last year. The filly is by Coolmore shuttle
sire High Chaparral out of a half-sister to the three-time Group 1
MAURICE UTRILLO THE BEST IN CARLSBERG GOLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Irish-bred Maurice Utrillo (Sadler’s Wells) gave South African
jockey Sean Cormack a winning pick-up ride in the inaugural
$75,000 Carlsberg Gold Championship 2010 race over 1900m
on Sunday, writes Michael Lee. Cormack was given the nod by
trainer Patrick Shaw after fellow countryman Barend Vorster was
struck by a bout of kidney stones.
When he slipped into the famous black and red maltese cross of
owner Fred Crabbia of Rocket Man fame, Cormack was not only
seizing a golden opportunity aboard a popular pick ($20) but also
rejoining forces with an owner he knows well back home.
“I had a good run riding some of Fred’s horses in the year before I
came here,” said Cormack. “I couldn’t tell you how many winners
we had, but I won five in a row on one of his horses that was
Listed graded.
“We were starting to build a nice working relationship before I
came here and he really is a nice gentleman. This was my first
ride for him since I’ve been here in Singapore and it is nice to
renew the relationship.”
Crabbia, who was not on hand to see Maurice Utrillo’s win, will
surely appreciate Cormack’s cool and composed handling of the
Sadler’s Wells four-year-old when he views the race replay.
Street Legal (Street Cry) took off like a scalded cat from his
outside gate to take the lead but immediately opened up a fourlength
lead from the first turn, with Maurice Utrillo heading the
rest of the pack.
Leong managed to steady up the pace down the backstraight
enabling the other horses to take closer order. Another Shaw
runner French Irish (Brahmns) speared over on the outside to take
over the weakening Street Legal at the point of the home turn.
Cormack angled Maurice Utrillo out into the clear at the top of
the straight to level up with his stablemate before pulling away.
French Irish however stayed on well to finish only a length adrift of
the winner, while favourite Kanegura (Suehiro Commander) ran on
for third another three parts of a length away.
“It was easy. Sit behind the speed, take the money and go home,”
said Shaw. “He’s a very good horse but has been unlucky to have
drawn wide at his previous runs. I feel sorry for Barend but Sean
is also a very good rider and more than an apt replacement.
“The fast pace played into his hands. He will definitely get better
over more ground.
“We originally bought him for the Derby in mind, but he wasn’t
quite ready for it. But I’d definitely like to look for a nice feature
race for him, over 1800m or more.”
Cormack reported that the final outcome was never in doubt
though the original stages did not pan out as expected. “It didn’t
work out smoothly when the other horse went so quickly. I was
worried he would run a little too freely,” said Cormack.
“For a furlong and a half, he had a tendency to do that with the
big gap ahead, but once he made ground and box-seated nicely,
he travelled really well. He was able to get out at the right place
and the rest was easy.”
Cormack said Vorster still owed him a beer even if he “pinched”
his winning ride in a beer-sponsored race. “Barend’s a good friend
and I’m sure he’ll be ok with that. He will probably get one of my
rides one day,” he said before adding in jest:
“He’s a rich man anyway. If anything, he should buy me a beer!”
KENNECOTT TURNS THINGS AROUND
fOR fREEDMAN
After finishing second at his first two starts, the Michael Freedmantrained
Kennecott (Bradbury’s Luck) finally cracked it for a win
by taking out the $65,000 Restricted Maiden over 1200m on
Sunday, writes Craig Brennan. The victory also ended a frustrating
run of minor placings for the Freedman stable which had just the
two winners in July and had been winless in the early stages of
August.
“From our last 17 runners prior to the weekend we had had one
winner and nine or 10 second or third placings,” said Freedman.
“It had been very frustrating going through a spell like that but
sometimes you experience them. At least we know the horses
were racing well but we were just finding it hard to win.”
Sent out the $8 favourite, Kennecott, ridden by Danny Beasley,
scored an easy three length victory over The Cinderella Man
(Pentire) with Lucky Steed (Handsome Ransom) six lengths away
third. >
After leading in the early stages of the race, Beasley elected to
take a sit in second place behind Lucky Steed with Jamie (Oamaru
Force) back in third position. Beasley had a lapful of horse
underneath him as the field turned for home and quickly put the
issue beyond doubt when he booted clear with 300m to run. The
Cinderella Man tracked wide coming around the turn and ran on
strongly without ever looking likely to run down the winner.
Freedman said he would have a look at the racing program to see
if there is a suitable race in the next two or three weeks for the
gelding.
“I’ll have a look to see what is available but if I can’t find anything
I may give him a month off and bring him back for the end of the
year,” said Freedman. “He looks like a horse that will get over a bit
of ground as he gets older and races over a mile should suit him.
“He could even develop into a Singapore Guineas horse next year.”
Beasley said Sunday’s race worked out perfectly and that the
gelding relaxed when headed coming off the back straight.
“He’s been very professional right from day one,” said Beasley.
“Today worked out perfectly for him. He was nice and relaxed and
finished the race off strongly.”
By Bradbury’s Luck, Kennecott is by the same sire as Friday night’s
winner Yoyo, and the pair are the only two horses by the sire racing
here in Singapore.
Freedman purchased Kennecott, who is from the Rory’s Jester
mare Hot Copper, at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast and
following Sunday’s success has accumulated around $60,000 in
EUROPE
£19 MILLION SHORTfALL fOR BRITISH
RACING
The Racing Post reports that British racing will find itself with a
shortfall of almost £19 million in prize-money contributions from
the Levy Board next year, after the sport’s central funding body
agreed where spending cuts totalling £24.5m should be made –
and further cuts may be necessary later in the year, according to
Levy Board chief executive Douglas Erskine-Crum.
“As of today, the budget is £70m, but William Hill are taking
their telephone business offshore and we understand from the
bookmakers that gross profits in the current levy year are poor,”
Erskine-Crum said last Thursday. “So, the budget will be reviewed
– up or down – in November, after the negotiations on the levy
scheme starting next April.”
A month ago, the Levy Board agreed that expenditure for 2011
should not exceed the forecast income of £70m, down from a
twice-revised budget figure of £94.5m for 2010. On Thursday,
following detailed discussions involving the board, the BHA,
Horsemen’s Group and Racecourse Association, the figure of
£70m was confirmed as a starting point, and decisions were
taken on where exactly the axe should fall in next year’s budget.
Prize-money, which has always accounted for more than half the
board’s expenditure, has taken the biggest actual hit, being sliced
by 34 per cent to £37.4m. Proportionately, the largest cut has
been made to fixture incentives, paid to racecourses to race on
otherwise unprofitable days, but this had already been signalled.
Items lumped together under ‘others’ – ranging from Levy Board
and Bookmakers’ Committee costs to support for veterinary
research, industry education and training, breeders’ prizes and
point-to-points – have lost 2.2 per cent of their funding, to a global
total of £7.6m. Regulatory and integrity services escape lightly
with a cut of £800,000.
The precise destination of cuts to prize-money and ‘other’ heads
of expenditure will be determined over the coming weeks. Cuts to
the range of ancillary items are likely to be put to the Levy Board
in September, but those relating to prize-money will form the basis
of more immediate debate on the 2011 fixture list.
Erskine-Crum said the framework for revised fixture criteria for
2011 had been approved, but finalisation would depend firstly on
discussions between the Horsemen’s Group and individual and
groups of racecourses.
Cuts in the racing programme next year are now expected to be in
double figures, not the three figures first suggested by the BHA.
Levy Board chairman Paul Lee said, “Much discussion has taken
place between the various parties in order to reach agreement on
expenditure allocations for 2011, which is a necessary step in
restarting the fixture process.
“It was recognised that adjustments may be necessary later in
the year, but if that is the case these should be made at that
point, rather than pre-empted now.”
PRINCESS DRINKS CHAMPAGNE
Katici Princess (Ire) (Noverre) confirmed her liking for the
Kenilworth 1200m as she ran out a comfortable winner of the
Champagne Stakes (Gr 3) on Saturday. Purple Orchid (GB) (Dr
Fong) ran on for second ahead of Clarion Call (SAF) (Kabool) and
Badger’s Cove (SAF) (Joshua Dancer).
Katici Princess was prominent throughout the race as Street
Runner (Toreador) and Florist Rose (Mogok) showed good early
pace and Dance With Al (Captain Al) raced up there with them.
Strawberry Ice (Western Winter), Seminole (Captain Al) and
Badger’s Cove were next best with Purple Orchid and Clarion Call
nowhere to be seen early on.
The early pacemakers started to tire past the 400m mark with
Katici Princess the only to have raced handy who still found herself
travelling reasonably comfortably. Badger’s Cove was shaken up
to get closer as Dance With Al came under a ride and Seminole
briefly looked a potential threat.
Katici Princess had the advantage entering the last furlong, having
successfully seen off all her challengers. Clarion Call appeared on
the scene from nowhere and Purple Orchid produced a late kick
but Katici Princess had it in the bag and crossed the line 1.50
lengths clear.
The winner has an interesting record, to say the least. She’s only
run nine times despite having turned six, but five of those runs
have ended in victory, two of them feature races over this course
and distance. She has some nice names in her pedigree and this
victory certainly will not have done any harm to her paddock value.
Purple Orchid bounced back to her best with a good effort in
defeat while Clarion Call, who was up in class, also ran creditable
under the WFA terms of the race. Badger’s Cove, meanwhile, is
battling to win again but showed - not for the first time - that she
can be counted on to be competitive in this sort of event.
JOCKEY BANNED fOR 12 MONTHS
Jockey Yan Weng Kuan, who last May notched up his 150th
career win on My Darlin Angel, was yesterday handed a one-year
disqualification for his handling of Saya Jantan in the NSF Premier
Stakes over 1200m at Luala Lumpur on Saturday.
Sayan Jantan (Magic Of Money - Kuala Lady by Centaine) came
from well off the pace to finish second to Classic Hero, beaten
just one length.
The stewards initially convened an inquiry into the running and
handling of Saya Jantan on Saturday. After taking initial evidence
from Yan, who rode Saya Jantan, and trainer Osman Sidek, the
stewards adjourned the inquiry in order to obtain the services of
a qualified interpreter as requested by Yan.
The stewards concluded the inquiry at the Selangor Turf Club
yesterday. Evidence was taken from Yan, and Osman. Certified
court interpreter, Ms Keng Siew Hong, assisted in this inquiry.
ANZ
Yan was found guilty of a charge under MRA Rule 44(8) in that
whilst riding Saya Jantan in the above race, he failed to take all
reasonable and permissible measures to ensure that Saya Jantan
was given full opportunity of winning or of obtaining the best
possible placing.
The particulars of the charge were that:
INTERNATIONAL CONT.
1. He failed to give sufficient rein to his mount at the start resulting
in it throwing its head up on 2 occasions, losing considerable
ground;
2. Passing the 400m mark till approximately the 200m mark, he
failed to commit himself to a run on the inside of Bolt when there
was an opportunity to do so and instead, unnecessarily angled
his mount outwards approaching the 200m to race behind Bolt;
and;
3. From passing the 200m to the finish, he failed to ride Saya
Jantan with sufficient vigour and determination when his mount
was running on strongly.
When deciding on penalty, the stewards took into consideration
the facts of this case, Yan’s record and points of mitigation.
After considering the provisions of MRA Rule 44(8)(a), Yan was
disqualified for a period of one year with immediate effect from
today and to expire on Aug 8, 2011, both days inclusive.
In addition, he was also fined the sum of RM50,000. He was
advised of his right of appeal.
Yan’s application for a stay of execution on Aug 12 was rejected
by the stewards. However, the racing stewards later allowed his
appeal for a stay of execution.
As a stakeswinning son of Danehill who performed at Group level
across both hemispheres, Annenkov is certainly qualified to join
the stallion ranks in Australia, and the fact that he is a full-brother
to two Group 1 winners from a high class French family adds his
credentials.
second in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1), and is a halfsister
to the dams of 1000 Guineas (Gr 1) winner Cape Verdi and dual
Grade 1 winner Angara.
Initially trained in France by Elie Lellouche, Annenkov ran six times
as a three-year-old, breaking his maiden on the fourth attempt
and placing second on two occasions. The colt was thought good
enough to contend the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1), but wearied
towards the end and finished mid-field. Returning as a four-yearold,
Annenkov won his first start at Maisons-Laffitte and placed
second in a race at Saint Cloud before notching up his first piece
of black type with a third in the Coupe de Longchamp (Gr 3). In two
more races before transferring to Australia, Annenkov placed third
in both the Prix Gontaut-Biron (Gr 3) and Prix de Boulogne (Listed).
Imported to Australia by Simon O’Donnell & Terry Henderson of
OTI Thoroughbreds, Annenkov ran three times for his new trained
Peter Moody – including a fifth in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1) –
before winning the RM Ansett Classic at Mornington.
The following season, Annenkov began to get into his stride,
winning two races including the VRC Emirates Airline Plate
(Listed). He was also placed third in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1)
behind Gilded Venom and Sniper’s Bullet but ahead of Group 1
performers Niconero, Bank Robber and Marasco; a close second
in the CB Cox Stakes (Gr 2) and third in the Coongy Handicap
(Gr 3). Annenkov ran three times the next season, placing fourth
twice, and was subsequently retired to Allandale Park Stud the
winner of five of his 40 races from 1600 to 2400m, with over
$600,000 in earnings. >
Annenkov is inbred to Northern Dancer and his dam is inbred to
