Freedman said he would have a look at the racing program to see if there is a suitable race in the next two or three weeks for the gelding. “I’ll have a look to see what is available but if I can’t find anything I may give him a month off and bring him back for the end of the year,” said Freedman. “He looks like a horse that will get over a bit of ground as he gets older and races over a mile should suit him. “He could even develop into a Singapore Guineas horse next year.” Beasley said Sunday’s race worked out perfectly and that the gelding relaxed when headed coming off the back straight. “He’s been very professional right from day one,” said Beasley. “Today worked out perfectly for him. He was nice and relaxed and finished the race off strongly.” By Bradbury’s Luck, Kennecott is by the same sire as Friday night’s winner Yoyo, and the pair are the only two horses by the sire racing here in Singapore. Freedman purchased Kennecott, who is from the Rory’s Jester mare Hot Copper, at the Magic Millions Sale on the Gold Coast and following Sunday’s success has accumulated around $60,000 in prizemoney for the R Racing Stable. Monday, August 16th, 2010 7 INTeRNATIONAL News EUROPE £19 MILLION SHORTfALL fOR BRITISH RACING The Racing Post reports that British racing will find itself with a shortfall of almost £19 million in prize-money contributions from the Levy Board next year, after the sport’s central funding body agreed where spending cuts totalling £24.5m should be made – and further cuts may be necessary later in the year, according to Levy Board chief executive Douglas Erskine-Crum. “As of today, the budget is £70m, but William Hill are taking their telephone business offshore and we understand from the bookmakers that gross profits in the current levy year are poor,” Erskine-Crum said last Thursday. “So, the budget will be reviewed – up or down – in November, after the negotiations on the levy scheme starting next April.” A month ago, the Levy Board agreed that expenditure for 2011 should not exceed the forecast income of £70m, down from a twice-revised budget figure of £94.5m for 2010. On Thursday, following detailed discussions involving the board, the BHA, Horsemen’s Group and Racecourse Association, the figure of £70m was confirmed as a starting point, and decisions were taken on where exactly the axe should fall in next year’s budget. Prize-money, which has always accounted for more than half the board’s expenditure, has taken the biggest actual hit, being sliced by 34 per cent to £37.4m. Proportionately, the largest cut has been made to fixture incentives, paid to racecourses to race on otherwise unprofitable days, but this had already been signalled. Items lumped together under ‘others’ – ranging from Levy Board and Bookmakers’ Committee costs to support for veterinary research, industry education and training, breeders’ prizes and point-to-points – have lost 2.2 per cent of their funding, to a global total of £7.6m. Regulatory and integrity services escape lightly with a cut of £800,000. The precise destination of cuts to prize-money and ‘other’ heads of expenditure will be determined over the coming weeks. Cuts to the range of ancillary items are likely to be put to the Levy Board in September, but those relating to prize-money will form the basis of more immediate debate on the 2011 fixture list. Erskine-Crum said the framework for revised fixture criteria for 2011 had been approved, but finalisation would depend firstly on discussions between the Horsemen’s Group and individual and groups of racecourses. Cuts in the racing programme next year are now expected to be in double figures, not the three figures first suggested by the BHA. Levy Board chairman Paul Lee said, “Much discussion has taken place between the various parties in order to reach agreement on expenditure allocations for 2011, which is a necessary step in restarting the fixture process. “It was recognised that adjustments may be necessary later in the year, but if that is the case these should be made at that point, rather than pre-empted now.” YOU CAN PLAN AHEAD AND BUY THEM NOW, OR SIT BACK AND TRY TO CHASE THEM LATER.
