As a stakeswinning son of Danehill who performed at Group level
across both hemispheres, Annenkov is certainly qualified to join
the stallion ranks in Australia, and the fact that he is a full-brother
to two Group 1 winners from a high class French family adds his
credentials.
His sister Aquarelliste won three times as Group 1 level in France,
and his brother Artiste Royal won at Grade 1 level in the United
States and has recently taken up stud duties at Haras d’Etreham.
Their dam Agathe (Manila) is a Group 3 winner who also placed
second in the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1), and is a halfsister
to Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1) winner Arcangues as well as
to the dams of 1000 Guineas (Gr 1) winner Cape Verdi and dual
Grade 1 winner Angara.
Initially trained in France by Elie Lellouche, Annenkov ran six times
as a three-year-old, breaking his maiden on the fourth attempt
and placing second on two occasions. The colt was thought good
enough to contend the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr 1), but wearied
towards the end and finished mid-field. Returning as a four-yearold,
Annenkov won his first start at Maisons-Laffitte and placed
second in a race at Saint Cloud before notching up his first piece
of black type with a third in the Coupe de Longchamp (Gr 3). In two
more races before transferring to Australia, Annenkov placed third
in both the Prix Gontaut-Biron (Gr 3) and Prix de Boulogne (Listed).
Imported to Australia by Simon O’Donnell & Terry Henderson of
OTI Thoroughbreds, Annenkov ran three times for his new trained
Peter Moody – including a fifth in the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1) –
before winning the RM Ansett Classic at Mornington.
The following season, Annenkov began to get into his stride,
winning two races including the VRC Emirates Airline Plate
(Listed). He was also placed third in the Railway Stakes (Gr 1)
behind Gilded Venom and Sniper’s Bullet but ahead of Group 1
performers Niconero, Bank Robber and Marasco; a close second
in the CB Cox Stakes (Gr 2) and third in the Coongy Handicap
(Gr 3). Annenkov ran three times the next season, placing fourth
twice, and was subsequently retired to Allandale Park Stud the
winner of five of his 40 races from 1600 to 2400m, with over
$600,000 in earnings. >
