The liaison officers will be existing NSWTA representatives or members appointed jointly by Racing NSW and the NSWTA. NSWTA Chief Executive, Steve McMahon, welcomed the arrangement: “It is important that minimum standards of our training tracks are upheld for the sake of everyone involved in racing,” McMahon said. “It’s vital that problems are communicated quickly so they can be fixed ASAP.” NSW Trainers Association is the only trainers’ representative group recognised by Racing NSW and NSW Legislation representing NSW trainers. In order to avoid any confusion as to whom one should speak to when there is a training problem at each respective track, a liaison officer has been for each track. The aim is to make it easier and more efficient for trainers, race clubs and Racing NSW to receive the information and act on it. If problems arise the matter shall be taken to the liaison officer whereby the officer will then take the issue up with the race club, before bringing the matter to the NSW Trainers Association. 9 IN PERSON wITh 1. Congratulations on your new position within the Australian Turf Club, could you tell us a little more about your new role? “Thank you. I’m excited about the new role as it is a wonderful opportunity for Australian Racing to present a ‘Grand Final’ event at Royal Randwick in April each year. We are getting organised to try and get the event up and running for 2014, and worst case we’ll be ready for 2015. “We have one of the great race courses of the world with the ‘new’ Royal Randwick about to be unveiled and we need to ensure there is a racing event befitting of the Venue that captures world interest.” 2. Details of a new race series, to be launched in 2014, were announced with your appointed, when is it likely that more details will be released on this? “We are still at a sensitive stage of negotiations with some key partners so until they are finalised it is difficult to say much more at the moment. I’m hopeful that by mid-year we’ll have in place the majority of elements that enable us to make a call on whether we can launch in 2014 or are better to hold off until 2015.” 3. Do you think after the recent success of international runners in Melbourne Cup more international runners will be attracted to the spring carnival and likely to target other races? “I suspect the model of more tried staying types being purchased to race in Australia will continue. That’s good for the Sydney Autumn Carnival as well given they’ll stay in Australia to race on, providing we can put on a viable and valuable series of races for these horses to target. I’m not convinced the ‘hit and run’ visits of European horses will continue to grow.” 4. If you bring any international horse to Australia for a spring campaign who would it be and why? “I’ll be more worried about getting horses to come to Sydney for Autumn. I’d love to see the Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom come to Australia to race in Sydney and the Japanese sprinter Lord Kanaloa would also be very welcome. Realistically if we can get three or four runners from outside of Australia and New Zealand in the first couple of years I’d be satisfied with that.” 6. What is your favourite racecourse and why? “Randwick. It has many happy memories for me of great days shared with friends. Being a Victorian I didn’t think I’d find a venue I liked more than Flemington but when the weather is kind there’s no better place to be at the races than on the lawns at Randwick.” 7. If you were put on a desert island for two weeks, what would be the three things you would take with you? “My three boys, Harry, Angus and Louis.
