J. HE pen<strong>in</strong>fula beyond <strong>the</strong> river Ganges, which llretches down to<br />
Johor, <strong>the</strong> extreme fou<strong>the</strong>rn po<strong>in</strong>t, (<strong>in</strong>deed it is <strong>the</strong> moll fou<strong>the</strong>rn po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
<strong>of</strong> land on <strong>the</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ent <strong>of</strong> Afia,) is generally known by <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong><br />
Malacca, or <strong>the</strong> Country <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong>s ; and that appellation is very<br />
properly reta<strong>in</strong>ed, l<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>Malay</strong> is <strong>the</strong> true mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>tongue</strong> <strong>of</strong> that country.<br />
It is likewife <strong>the</strong> chief language <strong>of</strong> Junkfelon, Pulo Ladda, Pulo P<strong>in</strong>ang,<br />
Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Bava, Lombock, Cumbava, Flores, Timor, Ti-<br />
morlaut, Celebes, Ceram, The Molucca Illands, and <strong>in</strong>numerable o<strong>the</strong>rs;<br />
it is, <strong>in</strong> fadl, <strong>as</strong> obferved <strong>in</strong> our Advertifement, <strong>the</strong> L<strong>in</strong>gua Franca, or<br />
Trad<strong>in</strong>g Language <strong>of</strong> a great part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eallem world : Aga<strong>in</strong>, it is <strong>the</strong><br />
more neceflary for Englifh voyagers to become acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with this lan-<br />
guage, f<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> European <strong>in</strong>habitants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cape <strong>of</strong> Good Hope (which<br />
important place now belongs to this nation) have always accuftomed<br />
<strong>the</strong>mfelves to fpeak to <strong>the</strong>ir fersants <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Malay</strong> <strong>tongue</strong>. In fome <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> iflands, however, particularly Borneo, <strong>the</strong> largeft ifland <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world<br />
except New Holland, it be<strong>in</strong>g about eighteen hundred miles <strong>in</strong> circum-<br />
ference, <strong>the</strong>re are feveral k<strong>in</strong>gdoms, each <strong>of</strong> which h<strong>as</strong> a dialed: peculiar<br />
