Here’s what else you can do in town WORDS LYDIA NG As the island gets ready to party for two straight months, there’s no better time to be in Singapore to enjoy the best it has to off er. FUEL UP With Singapore’s colonial past, you would expect the island to be peppered with places serving up Britfare. Well, the latest is the quintessentially British eatery The Jackson Plan (TJP) conceptualised by Beppe de Vito, the man behind Il Lido on Sentosa. The 90-seat gastrobar is named after Lieutenant Philip Jackson, the engineer who divided early Singapore into its four main districts of Chinatown, Chulia (now Little India), Kampong Glam and the Eurasian quarter in 1822. Behind the traditional dishes is Chef Christopher Dougan from Scotland, who trained under UK celebrity chefs Nigel Haworth and Paul Heathcote. Dig into black pudding, a sausage made with dried pig’s blood (it’s tastier than it sounds!), the very tender pork cheek accompanied by baked beans made in-house, or the hearty, homey fi sherman’s pie. To sweeten the palate, try TJP’s version of Eton mess (a dessert served at the famous school), which is dressed with rum-sautéed mango slices and gula melaka (palm sugar). And swig down a cocktail or two whipped GO GUIDE // up by Irish barman John Kernan. We recommend Pimm’s No 1 cup, a delicious alcoholic drink made with bitter lemon, Sprite and cut fruit. There is also a wicked range of English beers. To take in the atmosphere of being near the F1 race track and to enjoy a diff erent view of our now very happening Marina Bay precinct, what better way to unwind, than with small bites and drinks at an alfresco tapas bar while a band serenades you with easylistening Spanish favourites? You get all of this at Sol Tasca, a splitlevel restaurant located near the Esplanade bridge.
