ALL FOR A GOOD CAUSE The Thomas Cook Children’s Charity has been busy over the past few months making dreams come true for sick and disadvantaged children. The Charity is on track to raise around £1 million this year and that’s thanks to you, the valued customer. If you’d like to help out, simply hand any leftover holiday money to a member of your cabin crew on your return flight. Here are a few updates on some of the projects that have been made possible by your donations. THOMAS COOK NEWS Catch up with the latest from news from around the globe Thomas Cook Children’s Charity helps create a sporting legacy for London 2012 THERE’S NO DOUBT THAT LONDON 2012 will take its place in history UK with some incredible sporting achievements next year. But it’s so much more than the events that will take place between 27 July and 9 September 2012. Many projects are already underway to ensure that the Games will leave a lasting legacy of benefits in culture, sport and volunteering, not just in London, but across the UK. And the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity wants to ensure that it plays a key role in delivering that legacy, following Thomas Cook UK and Ireland’s exclusive partnership with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The new collaboration between Sport England (the English Sports Council) and the Charity will help fund projects that will deliver improved sporting opportunities for disadvantaged young people across England. It will work alongside the Inspired Facilities fund, part of Sport England’s Places, People, Play programme, which focuses on making it easier for local communities and volunteer groups to improve and refurbish sports clubs or transform non-sporting venues into modern sporting facilities. Inspired Facilities is investing £50 million of National Lottery funding in up to 1,000 community sports projects between now and 2012, and this will be given a further boost with up to £500,000 of funds from the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity. Any community or voluntary organisation can apply for grants to help with projects as complex as building a brand new sporting venue to as simple as buying new footballs and goal posts to replace worn-out equipment. Whatever the scale of the project, Sport England has designed the programme to be as simple and accessible as possible. Flights of fantasy for sick children AFTER READING ABOUT THE CHILDREN’S Charity on board a Thomas Cook Airlines flight, Lifelites made an application to the Children’s Charity for funds to purchase flight simulator software for 10 of its children’s hospices during 2010. Due to the nature of most of the children’s illnesses, many families are unable to enjoy a holiday. But through this virtual travel experience, the children can experience what it’s like to fly a plane through advanced technology. The project was such a hit with the children that the Trustees for the Charity agreed to fund equipment in a further 14 hospices during <strong>2011</strong>.
