LENDING A HAND
IN SPANISH
THOMAS COOK STAFF IN
Palma, Majorca, have been
helping local children’s charity
Ames by asking hoteliers to
donate bed linen, blankets and
towels to its three centres for
children who are unable to stay
with their own families, including
children that arrive from
Senegal and Mali with no family
or luggage. The Charity also
provided funding for a new mini
bus for the children.
HERE TO HELP
AT THOMAS COOK WE
believe our future as a
business depends on the
health and prosperity of the
communities in which we
operate, both at home and in
those countries where our
customers take holidays.
In the past few months we
have supported volunteering
activities undertaken by a
number of our employees,
not only because we want
to support the needs of
local communities, but also
because we recognise the
personal benefits our people
gain from carrying out
voluntary activities.
It’s easy being green
“Make Holidays Greener” week
was launched by the Travel
Foundation and takes place
annually in July. Holidaymakers
and Thomas Cook employees
are encouraged to take part in
environmental or social activities
in resort destinations. The great
thing about the activities is that
they’re now available all season,
so the benefits are long-lasting
and Thomas Cook guests have
something new to do on holiday.
SAVING SEALIFE
Launched in July 2011 to
celebrate “Make Holidays
Greener” week, Finding Shades
has become a regular fun-filled
family day out at Majorca’s
Palma Aquarium. Enjoy all the
fun of the aquarium, plus
entertainment and games
from KidsWORLD staff
and mascots like Shades
In 2011, cabin crew members
from our Birmingham airport
base delivered much-needed
stationery and gifts to a
school in the Gambia.
Supported by businesses
in Birmingham and the
Thomas Cook oversees team
based in the Gambia, it was
a huge success and greatly
welcomed by the children
in the Gambia (pictured).
Back at home, and in August
members of the cabin crew
training and recruitment
team spent an entire day at a
housing unit for young mothers
and children, close to our head
office. They decorated a room
runs “green” activities, from
treasure hunting to recycling
relays. You can also learn about
the “Save the Tuna” campaign
and sign the petition to stop
over-fishing of the endangered
blue fin tuna. Palma Aquarium
plays a huge role in the
conservation of marine species
and their natural environment
by spreading awareness
among the general public.
for one of the tenants, before
talking to other tenants about
the rewarding and exciting
careers available in the travel
and tourism industry.
Earlier, in spring 2011, our
airline finance department
joined forces with other UK
businesses to take part in a
conservation challenge set
up by Business in the
Community (one of The
Prince’s Charities, a group of
not-for-profit organisations of
which The Prince of Wales
is President). By removing
TASTE-TEST
Another regular feature of
“Make Holidays Greener” week
is the olive oil tasting event
at the Gargiulo olive press in
Sorrento. Combining modern
methods with century-old
traditions, Gargiulo produces
some of the tastiest olive
and truffle oils. The miniature
bottles (below) make excellent
souvenirs and gifts, and will
enable you to create a taste
of Sorrento back at home. See
your local resort representative
for further details.
insects, they helped restore
elements of the eco-system in
local parkland.
The positive feedback
received from people who
have benefited from all these
activities confirms that our
contributions do make a real
impact. And the big smiles
from our staff confirm that
volunteering is definitely good
for them, too!
