Einojuhani Rautavaara, in Serenades of <strong>the</strong> Unicorn, also calls <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mer<br />
to bounce a spoon on <strong>the</strong> strings. Rautavaara gives an approximate starting pitch and<br />
indicates <strong>the</strong> general contour of <strong>the</strong> rhythm of <strong>the</strong> bouncing spoon. In addition to that, he<br />
indicates that on <strong>the</strong> descending figure <strong>the</strong> spoon should bounce on <strong>the</strong> first two strings<br />
while on <strong>the</strong> ascending figure <strong>the</strong> spoon should bounce on <strong>the</strong> second and third strings.<br />
After <strong>the</strong> introduction, Rautavaara continues with <strong>the</strong> bouncing spoon in <strong>the</strong> right<br />
hand and adds hammer-ons 1 and glissandi in <strong>the</strong> left hand (Example 4-3).<br />

1 Hammer-ons are played by hitting <strong>the</strong> fret with <strong>the</strong> left hand hard enough to get <strong>the</strong> string to activate.<br />
This is a way to play notes without plucking with <strong>the</strong> right hand fingers.<br />
