The Surabaya Education Enhancement
Project (SEEP), supported by StarKids, was
introduced to 10 government schools and two
private Muslim schools, between 2006 and
2008. The project promotes learning through
active, joyful, effective and creative teaching
techniques and encourages family and
community participation in the schools.
Continued support from World Vision staff
gave teachers confi dence to understand and
embrace the techniques, and helped motivate
them to continue training. Students are now,
in turn, being encouraged and motivated to
achieve better results.
Parents are now participating more in
activities, school committees and other
groups to support their children’s school.
Principals, teachers, students, parents, school
committees and the community have all
collaborated to support the new ideas.
National Elementary school BU 8 is now
a cheerful-looking building, decorated
with murals, fl owering plants and colourful
banners. School supervisor Moenisha
proudly shows a once-bare classroom, now
adorned in decorations and posters. Brightly
painted chairs and desks are arranged into
learning clusters and a small, improvised
library occupies a corner. Sitting in an area
well-known as a centre for prostitution and
drug use, few people would have considered
school BU 8 had the potential to become a
benchmark for quality education.
But BU 8 is now a model school. Teachers
visit the school from as far away as
Kalimantan and Bali to participate in training.
BU 8 students have gone on to represent the
school in national education competitions;
one student was ranked 31st in the entire
country in science. Moenisha — who
supervises eight schools — now regularly
trains teachers in other districts
and provinces, and presents her work to
the Ministry of Education. She’s proud to be
a voice, not simply for schooling but for
“good education”.
In supporting SEEP, the StarKids program
has helped teachers and students learn new
skills and begun a process of cultural and
educational change in these communities.
Offi cials from the area’s Education
Department have discussed the project
enthusiastically as a proud collective
achievement. The local community is now in
charge of the ongoing training and support
program for the school, and the lessons
learned have been used to support other
schools throughout Indonesia.
SEEP has been extremely successful in
improving the quality of schooling, and in
turn, creating far-reaching benefi ts for the
children and families of these areas.
Moenisha remains hopeful that a new
generation of Indonesian teachers will be
creative and open-minded, so that more
schools can create change. “Everything
needs to change. Without change, we can
have no life.”
