Different Diving Disciplines:
01
Jonn lU profile
Jonn
NAUI scuba diving, and first-aid instructor
Jonn Lu has been diving since 1995. He also
teaches freediving, drown-proofing and water
confidence. He sounds off on diving hotspots.
for Scuba diving (limited to 40 metres):
Sipadan, Malaysia, the undisputed mecca of
tropical water diving known for its sheer volume
of marine life. Mong Kok on a Sunday afternoon
is the closest analogy I can think of when it
comes to the variety ... in Sipadan. There is
no other place in Asia with this much. Advice
to new divers: Sipadan is a proverbial dessert
buffet and it can potentially ruin your diving
palate. Work your way through modest starters
and mains first before you dive Sipadan.
02
for Technical diving (for dives that go
beyond 40 metres and involve multiple tanks,
exotic gas mixtures and blends, in overhead
environments such as cave systems and
shipwrecks): Coron in the Philippines is home to
several mammoth Second World War wrecks,
most in excess of 100 metres in length. What’s
magical about diving a big wreck is taking
something that we are all familiar with size-wise,
and then having the surreal pleasure of “floating”
down on it, and then “flying” through it.
03
for freediving (apnea diving in just a wet
suit, mask and fins): Mactan in Cebu, is known
for crystal clear waters (you can see the bottom
through 30 to 50-metre-deep water from the
surface) and gentle sloping into the deep blue
abyss. Mactan makes it easy for freediving buddy
pairs to safely monitor each other for episodes
of shallow water blackouts. Clear waters also
mean that one can float face-down in about 30
to 50 metres of water and be able to see the
bottom, and all the marine activity going on.
