There are multi-million dollar movie marketing campaigns
and then there is the kind of spontaneous excitement that
a new Stanley Kubrick fi lm always generated. It is now
12 years since the release of Eyes Wide Shut and, in line with
its director’s later rate of output (his previous fi lm was Full
Metal Jacket in 1987), that makes it about time for another
fi x. Sadly we won’t get one. Kubrick died in 1999, just as his
lush, controversial swansong starring Kidman and Cruise
reached our screens. His death was probably the fi rst time

qui, vu le rythme de travail du réalisateur dans ses dernières années (son
précédent fi lm Full Metal Jacket date de 1987) devrait nous laisser espérer
une nouvelle production géniale. Hélas, ce bonheur n’arrivera pas :
Kubrick est mort en 1999, au moment où arrivait sur nos écrans, porté par
Kidman et Cruise, son chant du cygne controversé et enivrant. Sa mort
fut sans doute, depuis la réalisation de Spartacus en 1960, le premier
événement extérieur autorisé à contrarier ses projets.
