once, did great work, then swore never, under any On the set of Paths of Glory circumstances, to work with him again. He could be diffi cult, Harlan acknowledges, “but it was Le tournage even more diffi cult for Kubrick to be satisfi ed with des Sentiers his own work, and the demands he made on de la gloire others have to be seen in this context”. Harlan, whose tasks ranged from clearing music rights to fi nding Vietnam-era tanks in fi lmable condition, was certainly not his only devotee. “Everybody pretty much acknowledges that he’s the man,” says Jack Nicholson, “and I still feel that underrates him.” John Alcott was the only cinematographer who worked with Kubrick more than once, on A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and The Shining, and would surely have continued the collaboration if he had lived longer. The sumptuous 18th-century panoramas of Barry Lyndon won Alcott a best cinematography Oscar. But he earned it: the fi lm’s indoor scenes are shot using nothing but candelight, which must have been headache-inducing in every sense. Barry Lyndon, an adaptation of a Thackeray novel starring Ryan O’Neal as an Irish rogue marrying into the British aristocracy, was a typical Kubrick movie in that it had absolutely nothing in common with the previous Kubrick movie, not on the beautifully composed surface, at any rate. From heist movie The Killing, Kubrick moved to a fi lm about injustice in World War I, Paths of Glory (1957), starring Kirk Douglas, who later brought him in on Spartacus (1960). If Douglas thought he was getting a yes man he showed stunningly bad judgement. “Stanley Kubrick is a talented shit,” was his verdict at the end of that multi-layered toga epic, before he stomped off to join Ballard in the “never again” club. Kubrick, by now world-famous, went off to make a controversial American road movie – in England. Lolita (1962) was a disappointment to the book’s author, Vladimir Nabokov. “A blurred skimpy glimpse of the marvellous picture I imagined,” he lamented. But, given that it is about an aristocrate britannique, était typique des fi lms de Kubrick car il n’avait rien à voir avec le précédent, du moins en apparence.
