ROUNDUP
MONSTER MASH
A GUIDE TO THE
CRYPTIDS* THAT MIGHT
LIVE AMONG US
Chupacabra
WHERE: Puerto Rico and
Texas (near Houston)
WHAT: A hairy reptilian with
glowing red eyes and fangs
that attacks livestock and
drinks their blood
CHANCE IT EXISTS: It
hasn’t been seen in Puerto
Rico since a rash of alleged
attacks in the mid-1990s,
and recent “sightings”
across Texas have turned out
to be coyotes with bad cases
of mange.
OUR GUESS: They are packs
of bloodthirsty wild dogs.
Grassman
WHERE: Rural Ohio, near
Akron and Columbus
WHAT: A 7- to 8-foot-tall apelike
hominid covered in hair,
similar to Bigfoot, but less
solitary (they’ve been seen
in groups)
CHANCE IT EXISTS: Sightings
have persisted since
the 18th century, but video
and photographic evidence
has proven inconclusive.
OUR GUESS: Teens heard the
legend, bought gorilla suits
and prank the locals.
*animals whose existence or survival
is disputed or unsubstantiated
HOW TO BECOME A SUPERHERO IN NEW YORK CITY
1. COSTUME. Superman was
Clark Kent until he put on his
cape and boots. Get yours at
Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co.
GO MAGAZINE OCTOBER 2010
2. AGILITY. You won’t cling to
skyscrapers, but you can jump
like Spiderman after a few
gymnastics classes at NYC Elite.
3. CRIME-FIGHTING SKILLS.
Practice Batman’s martial art of
choice at Clockwork Jiu-Jitsu to
turn your whiffs into POWs.
Jersey Devil
WHERE: New Jersey Pine
Barrens, near Atlantic City
WHAT: A huge winged beast
with cloven feet and talons
that kills livestock and
terrorizes humans
CHANCE IT EXISTS: There
have been sporadic sightings
since the 1700s, which
peaked in January 1909.
A new photo—and fresh
debate—surfaced this year.
OUR GUESS: Fugitives and
outlaws called “Pine Robbers”
triggered the legend.
Altamaha-ha
WHERE: Mouth of Georgia’s
Altamaha River, 70 miles
north of Jacksonville, FL
WHAT: A 20-foot-long,
dinosaur-like aquatic animal
with an alligator’s elongated
snout, a low dorsal fin, front
flippers and a long, horizontal
tail that it undulates like
a dolphin to propel itself
CHANCE IT EXISTS: Bigfoot
once spotted one, but even
his photo came out blurry.
OUR GUESS: The locals have
Loch Ness envy.
