Hordeolum A stye;an <strong>in</strong>flammation of a sebaceous gland of the eye lid. A common<br />

staphyloccal <strong>in</strong>fection of the lid glands; essentially an abscess, with pus<br />

formation; symptoms <strong>in</strong>clude swell<strong>in</strong>g, redness, and pa<strong>in</strong>. Two types are<br />

classified: <strong>in</strong>ternal hordeolum (relatively large, affect<strong>in</strong>g the meibomian glands;<br />

may po<strong>in</strong>t toward the sk<strong>in</strong> or toward the conjunctive) and external hordeolum<br />

(also known as a "sty;" smaller and more superficial; an <strong>in</strong>fection of the glands<br />

of moll or zeiss; pa<strong>in</strong>ful; always po<strong>in</strong>ts toward the sk<strong>in</strong> side of the lid marg<strong>in</strong>).<br />

Treatment: both types of hordeola are treated with warm compresses for 10-15<br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes 3-4 times a day; if the condition does not improve with<strong>in</strong> 48 hours,<br />

<strong>in</strong>cision and dra<strong>in</strong>age of the pus is <strong>in</strong>dicated. Antibacterial ophthalmic o<strong>in</strong>tment<br />

is also helpful.<br />

Implications: although hordeola are not visually threaten<strong>in</strong>g, they are uncomfortable<br />

and should be treated; prevention of <strong>in</strong>fection spread<strong>in</strong>g to other parts of the<br />

eye is a consideration. A large <strong>in</strong>ternal hordeolum has the potential to affect the<br />

entire lid through accompany<strong>in</strong>g cellulitis.<br />

Personal hygiene, especially for children, is an <strong>in</strong>dication.<br />

blood,mucous discharges,too copious flow of milk,too long cont<strong>in</strong>ued<br />

nurs<strong>in</strong>g.2.<strong>in</strong>suffient supply of nutrient or disturbed nutrition,so that the recieved<br />

is not converted to albumen.it is found <strong>in</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation with diseases of the heart<br />

and lungs,tuberculosis,chronic <strong>in</strong>digestion,protracted <strong>in</strong>termittent fevers,bright's<br />

disease.<br />
