Hypochondriasis A morbid concern about the health and exaggerated attention to any unsual<br />

bodily or mental sensations;an unfounded belief that one is suffer<strong>in</strong>g from some<br />

disease.Hypochondria (or hypochondriasis, sometimes referred to as health<br />

anxiety or health phobia) is a somatoform disorder <strong>in</strong> which one has the<br />

unfounded belief that he or she is suffer<strong>in</strong>g from a serious illness. Hypochondria<br />

is often characterized by irrational fears of be<strong>in</strong>g diseased/dy<strong>in</strong>g, obsessions<br />

over m<strong>in</strong>or bodily symptoms or imperfections, doubt and disbelief <strong>in</strong><br />

doctors' diagnosis, constant self-exam<strong>in</strong>ation and self-diagnosis and<br />

preoccupation with one's body. Hypochondriacs often require constant<br />

reassurance, sometimes from multiple doctors, family and friends.<br />

Hypochondria is often associated withobsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)<br />

and anxiety, and can also be brought on by stress. The<br />

term hypochondria comes from the Greek hypo- (below)<br />

and chondros (cartilage - of the breast bone). Because the imag<strong>in</strong>ary disease is<br />

often reffered to the stomach regionThe term was orig<strong>in</strong>ally <strong>used</strong> to describe<br />

unidentifiable stomach pa<strong>in</strong>s. It was thought by ancient Greek physicians that<br />

such pa<strong>in</strong>s were ca<strong>used</strong> by the movement of the spleen, an organ located near<br />

the hypochondrium (the upper region of the abdomen just below the ribs on<br />

either side of the epigastrium).Dur<strong>in</strong>g the 19th century the term evolved to be<br />

the male counterpart to hysteria.<br />

atmospheric changes, mental or emotional excitements, <strong>in</strong>digastion.they are<br />

usually found <strong>in</strong> women of a nervous temperament.<br />

Hysteria This hydra headed compla<strong>in</strong>t has to be classed among the neuroses,<strong>in</strong> which at<br />

times part or whole nervous system participates,without the presence of any<br />

anatomical basis.causes are-a peculiar psychical constituion,liable to chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />

emotions and little strength of will;disorders of female genital organs,menstrual<br />

disturbances,non-gratification of sexual appetite or over irritation;persistant<br />

depress<strong>in</strong>g mental emotions like failures,love sickness,jealousy,<strong>in</strong>jured<br />

vanity,wounded pride,grief,anxiety;educational <strong>in</strong>fluences,over ambition.<br />

Symptoms <strong>in</strong>clude.1.abnormal irritability with neuralgic pa<strong>in</strong>s and<br />

halluc<strong>in</strong>ations,convulsions or anaesthesia and paralysis.usually seen <strong>in</strong> females<br />

between ten and thirty years.photophobia,dislike to colours,flashes<br />

sparks,oversensitiveness to hear<strong>in</strong>g,r<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g,blow<strong>in</strong>g,roar<strong>in</strong>g;aversion to different<br />

tastes or smell,desire for smaell and th<strong>in</strong>gs unpleasent for others;pa<strong>in</strong> and<br />

abnormal sensations all over the body.;anaesthesia;spasm <strong>in</strong> all the organs<br />

manifested as globus hystericus,retention of ur<strong>in</strong>e,stool,convulsions;paralytic<br />
