Locomotor ataxia Tabes dorsalis.A late form of syphilis result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a harden<strong>in</strong>g of the dorsal<br />
columns of the sp<strong>in</strong>al cord and marked by shoot<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>s, emaciation, loss of<br />
muscular coord<strong>in</strong>ation, and disturbances of sensation and digestion. Also<br />
called locomotor ataxia. Tabes dorsalis is a late manifestation of untreated<br />
syphilis and is characterized by a triad of cl<strong>in</strong>ical symptoms namely gait<br />
unstead<strong>in</strong>ess, lightn<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong>s and ur<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>cont<strong>in</strong>ence. It occurs due to a slow<br />
and progressive degeneration of nerve cells and fibers <strong>in</strong> sp<strong>in</strong>al cord. It is one of<br />
the forms of tertiary syphilis or neurosyphilis.<br />
Description<br />
The first description of the disorder was given by a French neurologist, Guillame<br />
Duchenne <strong>in</strong> 1858 who called it l'ataxie locomotrice progressive (progressive<br />
locomotor ataxia). But the word tabes dorsalis was co<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> 1836 even before<br />
the actual cause was discovered.Tabes <strong>in</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong> means "decay" or<br />
"shrivel<strong>in</strong>g"; dorsalis means "of the back." These <strong>in</strong>dicate the location and type<br />
of damage occurr<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the sp<strong>in</strong>al cord. It is also called "sp<strong>in</strong>al syphilis" or<br />
"syphilitic myelopathy."<br />

exfoliaticus-there is <strong>in</strong>filtration,the sk<strong>in</strong> is same colour covered with lamellae of<br />
the epidermis.4.lupus exulcerans-there are atonic ulcers,which results from<br />
soften<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>in</strong>filtration.5.lupus hypertrophicus-there are new formations ris<strong>in</strong>g<br />
above the sk<strong>in</strong> which <strong>in</strong>volves larger areas.6.lupus serpig<strong>in</strong>ous-large ulcers<br />
extend<strong>in</strong>g peripherically.first 4 stages are known as lupus nonexedens and latter<br />
two lupus exedens<br />
Lupus erythematosis Lupus sebaceosous, lupus erythematodes, erythematoids, lupus superficialis,<br />
seborrhea congestiva, erythema centrifugum. An eruption of flat red papules,<br />
usually with a white scale<br />
Lupus vulgaris Tuberculosis of the sk<strong>in</strong>; appears first on the face and heals slowly leav<strong>in</strong>g deep<br />
